| Here’s the Verizon Carrier Lock Removal Message Pixel 3 Devices Will See Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, two phones that are fully capable of working on every major carrier without issue, are SIM locked out of the box when purchased as a "Verizon" model. That means they are locked to Verizon because Verizon says they have a theft problem, or something. As we first reported yesterday, the lock is only in place for about a day and goes away automatically overnight once a Verizon SIM card has been inserted and the phone activated. This morning, a couple of readers who first fired up their Pixel 3 and 3 XL units yesterday, let us know that their phones notified them today of their carrier locks being removed. And again, this all happens automatically, just as Verizon told us it would. Neither reader tried to use another SIM from another carrier, yet still received the notification that their phones were now unlocked. Below you can see the notification on a Pixel 3 that says "Carrier lock removed" and "The device can now be used on any network." To recap, Verizon is SIM locking most of their phones at this point. That SIM lock is only temporary and goes away automatically overnight, once the phone has been activated on Verizon. If you buy a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL from Best Buy, you need to first activate it with Verizon before you can take it to another network. That's going to be somewhat tricky for most, so you should instead just buy the phone directly from Google. Cheers Bryan, Jake, Dennis, Mike, and Raymond! | Sharing Your Location and ETA in Google Maps is Much Better Now Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT In March, 2017, Google introduced real-time location sharing in Google Maps. The feature works fine and dandy, but apparently, Google thinks it can do better. In an update headed out to users this week, you'll see an improved experience when sharing your location, ETA, and route. To break it down, let's say you begin navigating to your destination. From here, tap on the ˄ button and then on "Share trip progress." From here, you'll be able to share your live location, route, and ETA with any contact you have. The update also includes support for sharing across 3rd-party apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and more. Naturally, once your journey ends, you'll automatically stop sharing your location. Check out how it works on Apple's glorious old iPhone below and then go grab that update! | Securely log in to Hangouts Chat desktop apps with SSO or security keys Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT We're improving the Hangouts Chat sign in process to support using Single-Sign-On (SSO) and security keys within our native MacOS and Windows apps. These authentication options were previously only available for Chat on the web. With SSO, employees can use the same, easy sign-in process for Chat that they use to access all of their enterprise cloud applications after signing in just one time. For admins who have required that their users have 2-step verification enabled, this requirement will now apply to Chat desktop apps as well. | Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT When it comes to wireless chargers, the biggest drawback of most of them is they make it hard to see or use your phone while it charges. Chargers that mount your phone in a way that faces you tend to have various mechanisms that add extra steps to putting the phone on or taking the phone off of the charger. Scosche’s MagicMount Pro Charge, however, gives you a top notch wireless charger that places your phone in perfect view and without any cumbersome gadgets to keep it in place. Even better, 14 AP readers will get one free thanks to Scosche. First of all, the MagicMount Pro Charge is as good of a wireless charger you could ask for, disregarding the convenience and ergonomics. You get the widely-followed Qi standard and output up to 10W, meaning devices that support the latest and great fast wireless charging are supported. It also includes bonus safety features like foreign object detection to avoid overcharging and overheating. Then we get to the form factor. Rather than having to do something like fiddle with retractable arms to keep your phone attached to the charger, you just use the power of magnets! Put a secure, removable magnetic decal on the back of your device and it will cling to the MagicMount Pro Charge with no added effort. You might have heard that magnets are not good for phones, but these are completely harmless to your device. The base of the MagicMount Pro suctions to your desk or whichever surface you choose, so the whole setup is quite sturdy and of course can be moved without any hassle. Sold? Well you can buy one for $69 at Scosche’s website. If you want to try your luck first, see below. To win, use the widget below. You must have a US shipping address to claim your prize. The contest ends at 11:59pm on Monday, October 22nd. Make sure to stop by each day to claim your free daily entry! | Google apps may cost EU phone makers as much as $40 per phone Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Two days ago, Google unveiled new licensing terms for Android phones and tablets in the European Union, following the EU’s record $5 billion fine. Device manufacturers can now sell phones with heavily-modified builds of Android while also producing normal Android devices with the Play Store, and some apps (like Chrome and Google Search) are now separate licenses. According to a report from The Verge, device makers are still strongly incentivized to ship Search and Chrome, or they could pay as much as $40 per device for access to the Play Store. Allegedly, the licensing fees vary depending on country and device specifications. EU countries are divided into three tiers, with licenses in Sweden, Germany, the UK, Norway, and the Netherlands costing the most. If a phone with a pixel density higher than 500ppi is sold in those countries, the fee is $40. 400-500ppi devices will cost $20, and anything lower is $10. For lower-end phones in other countries, the fee could be as little as $2.50. This pricing scheme would impact premium phones the most. For example, the Galaxy S9 (570ppi), Huawei Mate 20 Pro (538ppi), and LG V40 ThinQ (537ppi) would all incur the highest licensing fees. The report claims there is a completely separate fee structure for tablets, which is applied evenly across countries and maxes out at $20 per device. Google is also incentivizing manufacturers to keep Chrome and Google Search installed. If Chrome is pre-installed on a phone and added to the home screen, Google will share ad revenue from web searches with the manufacturer. It’s not clear at this point if the costs incurred from the new licensing fees will be passed onto consumers in any meaningful way. The new terms only apply to devices launched after October 29, so it’s not as if every phone in the EU will suddenly shoot up in price by $5-40. Other browser and search providers, like Microsoft, might offer to pay the fees for a chance to replace Chrome and/or Google Search on popular devices. | JerryRigEverything’s Pixel 3 XL test reveals back glass durability Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT The Pixel 3 XL is landing on doorsteps as we speak, but how careful do you need to be with your shiny new smartphone? YouTube channel JerryRigEverything is here to absolutely wreck another phone in order to assess its durability. The Pixel comes out of it alright—it won’t bend, but you might pick up some scratches. The bend test is usually the main event in JerryRigEverything videos, but not here. The Pixel 3 XL is a glass sandwich with aluminum sides, so it doesn’t even flex very much; no concerns there. People are concerned about the durability of the Pixel’s etched back glass. In the video below, you can see the phone does scratch at a Mohs hardness of 4 with a bit of scuffing at level 3. Smooth Gorilla Glass scratches at a 7 with scuffing at 6. So, what does this mean? The Pixel 3 and 3 XL are definitely more prone to scratching than most glass phones, but that should not surprise you. We’ve just gotten used to not worrying about scratches on our glass phones. Aluminum is about a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. Anodization adds a layer of aluminum oxide, which is much harder. However, anodizing is primarily for corrosion resistance and color—the layer is too thin to add much durability. You’ve probably scratched an aluminum phone before; I know I have. It’s possible the Pixel’s glass is similarly scratchy compared to aluminum, so keep that in mind. If it really bothers you, make sure to grab a case. | What’s Your Ubuntu 19.04 Codename Prediction? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT
it could, at this point, be literally anything — but what do think the codename of Ubuntu 19.04 will be? Ten years on since Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty Jackalope', the first release this site covered, plenty has changed. But so entrenched is that particular release that my muscle memory is still programmed to type 9.04 instead of 19.04 — so if you see a lot of errant 1s in future posts, you know why! Back to the potential codename. Since the great codename reset of 2017 we've enjoyed releases named:
If the alphabetised tradition stays in use (and there's little reason why it wouldn't)then the Ubuntu 19.04 codename will start with the letter:
Not for the first time, either. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS 'Dapper Drake' was also a 'D' lettered release. 'Dapper' meaning 'well dressed', and a drake is the name given to an adult male duck. Ironically, the duck was a fitting mascot for the first Ubuntu LTS as it waddled out into release land late! It remains the only version of Ubuntu (to date) to be released substantially late, shipping in June 2006 rather than April (hence 6.06 and not 6.04). What might the next release choose? Ubuntu 19.04 Codename SuggestionsA list of animals that start with 'D' include:
There are also a litter of dog breeds that begin with 'D' include dalmatian, dachshund, and, er, doggy, um, dog… Some positive attributes and adjectives that start with 'D' include:
…And many, many more. Use the comment space below to share your best guess at the Ubuntu 19.04 codename and any poetic reasons why you think it'd fit. There are no prizes if you guess right, but you will bag a lot of kudos and the right to wear a smug look for the entire release cycle! | Canonical Launch Ubuntu User Statistics Website Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Canonical has launched an official webpage to relay Ubuntu user statistics collected by the Ubuntu report tool. The company had shared a few early findings from its data collection tool earlier in the year, but we've had to wait until now to get the full set via a fancy-pants website. And they were worth the wait. All of the info that makes up the Ubuntu user statistics report was collated from non-identifiable system data that users who installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS explicitly opted in to share. For this Canonical says it "appreciate[s] the trust" users have given it, and says it will "use the results to focus our development efforts on where it matters most to users." It's for precisely that reason why we (controversially, perhaps) made choosing to share your system info with Canonical part of our list of things to do after installing Ubuntu 18.10 list. That and, well, we're nosey. The data is separated into three distinct sections:
Each section spans a range of questions. These are neatly presented don the website with a smattering of colourful graphs, bar charts, pie charts and other informational graphics. It's nice that the findings are in a nicely digestible format! I won't spoil the all of the insights the report offers, but here are few notable snatches that reveal:
and
In addition we learn that users use have a single or dual core processor and between 1GB and 4GB of RAM. The most common screen resolution is a roomy 1920×1080 (and I assume/hope that 11% of folks rocking a tiny 800×600 resolution are all virtual machine users). To learn even more about the system choices of your fellow Ubuntu users scoot on over of the stats page on the official Ubuntu website, linked to below.
