FOX NOW: Live & On Demand TV

Watch FOX right now

FOX NOW: Live & On Demand TV

Shows from A to Z

For those who enjoy the shows on Fox and want to watch anytime.

It seems that FOX has some pretty good content in terms of their own television shows these days, but the problem is that your schedule conflicts with the times that your favorite shows air. Don’t worry though! FOX NOW is an Apple TV app that lets you watch new episodes of your current on-air favorites a day after they air, so you don’t have to miss out for long. Plus, the app also has a back catalog of recent episodes so you can catch up with whatever you’ve missed on your own time. But you’ll have to be fast — this stuff doesn’t stay on forever.

Why we love it

FOX can have some great shows on the air, but it can be hard to keep up with everything the moment they air. The FOX NOW app lets you catch up with fresh episodes just a day later and you can even catch up with the latest episodes from the back catalog. It’s a great way to stay on top of your favorites.

For those who…

  • You like FOX shows
  • You want to catch up with new episodes quickly

Not for those who…

  • You want a full library of episodes from every season
  • You don’t like FOX programming

CW Seed

Get your fill of the CW whenever you have some spare time

CW Seed

Get straight to the show

For anyone who enjoys watching the CW but prefers their own schedule

The CW is a network that we are all familiar with due to the rather fully stocked lineup of television shows, such as “Vixen,” “The O.C.,” “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” “Veronica Mars,” and more. While the network has some great original programming, it can be hard to keep up with everything due to schedule conflicts with when the show is on and your own busy life. Fortunately, this app lets you access the entire CW catalog of shows for free, so you can catch up on what you’ve missed whenever you have time. It’s a must-have if you enjoy any shows on the CW.

Why we love it

We like to watch television, including some shows on the CW. Being able to access all of these on our Apple TV, for free, is amazing.

For those who…

  • You like the shows on the CW
  • You are never able to catch the shows as they air

Not for those who…

  • You don’t like the CW
  • You don’t watch a lot of TV

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL First Factory Images are Available!

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Google just posted the first factory image and OTA files for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Since today is basically launch day, the timing seems just about right.

The files are available as Android 9.0.0 builds PD1A.180720.030 and PD1A.180720.031 for both phones, the second being the Verizon specific build. This is the build you should find out of the box.

These contain the September security patch, for those curious, which is odd knowing that we're almost to November. Google could either push an update before November to get us on October's or they may wait and just give us November's. We'll have to see how that goes.

You can grab each image or OTA file at the links below. For instructions on how to flash a factory image, here you go. For instructions on how to flash an OTA .zip file, here you go.

SHIELD TV and Google Home Integration Cranked to 11

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Earlier this month, NVIDIA hosted a promotion that netted you a free Google Home Mini with the purchase of a SHIELD TV. At the time, NVIDIA touted the ability to turn on SHIELD by asking Google Home to do so, as well as playing content from Netflix on SHIELD TV simply by speaking the command.

Today, NVIDIA announced a bounty of new integration coming soon to Google Home and SHIELD TV.

For a few examples, you can tell Google Home to set the volume to a particular level on SHIELD TV, mute the device, play and pause playback of media, get shown photos, as well as much more.

Seriously, look at all of these controls and commands.

Basic Commands

  • "Turn on SHIELD"
  • "Turn off SHIELD"
  • "Open [name of app] on SHIELD"

Volume Control

  • "Set volume to 50% on SHIELD"
  • "Increase/decrease volume on SHIELD"
  • "Mute/unmute volume on SHIELD"

Playback Features

  • "Play [name of Netflix, HBO NOW, CBS, Viki, or Starz show] on SHIELD"
  • "Play [name of song] on [name of app] on SHIELD"
  • "Watch [name of channel] on YouTube TV on SHIELD"
  • "Play on YouTube on SHIELD"
  • "Pause on SHIELD"
  • "Play on SHIELD"

Photos and Smart Home

  • "Show me my pictures from Egypt on SHIELD"
  • "Show me my pictures from last weekend on SHIELD"
  • "Dim the lights"
  • "Set the temperature to 72 degrees"

NVIDIA says all of this integration will roll out to all SHIELD TV owners this month. Wicked.

OnePlus 6T Going to Work on Verizon?

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Will the dream come true? Could the OnePlus 6T work on Verizon? Maybe!

According to a report out of PCMag, the OnePlus 6T may work on Verizon when it arrives on October 30. That's not a slam dunk guarantee that it will, but the report states that "multiple different industry sources" have suggested that will be the case.

The phone is said to have support for Verizon's Band 13 LTE and that it may be going through certification at the moment. While OnePlus could potentially release the phone with Band 13 support and without certification, getting it to work the best on Big Red's network typically would require certification, like we saw with the Essential Phone, Sony Xperia XZ2 and HTC U12+.

Assuming this happens, this is huge news. OnePlus has made some of the best phones for the price since they launched back in 2014, but have never had Verizon network support. In the US, which is a big market for OnePlus, you kind of need to be on the biggest wireless carrier in the land or at least let your phone work with it.

And that's what we're talking here – support for Verizon, not sold at Verizon. We still think T-Mobile will be OnePlus' first carrier partner, but this news today would mean that you could buy the phone from OnePlus and then slap a Verizon SIM card in to get service.

Please be true.

[Déjà vu] Pixel 3 and 3 XL video recordings have poor audio

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Google’s Pixels are known for their software quality, but they’re also known for launching with random issues, like last year’s Pixel 2 audio quality problems when recording video. The theme continues with this year’s Pixel 3 phones, and the first problem reviewers have noticed with Google’s latest flagships is — you guessed it — another microphone/audio issue.

The problem was first brought to prominence by YouTuber SuperSaf TV, whose video (embedded just above) highlights the difference in recorded audio quality when compared to the iPhone Xs Max. Former Android Police YouTuber Jerome Ortega also noted the same difference in quality on his smaller Pixel 3.

In short, audio recorded by the Pixel 3 and 3 XL in videos sounds exceptionally tinny and distant. We haven’t confirmed if the issue exists outside video (my own Pixel 3 is yet to arrive, so I can’t check for myself), but the examples we’ve seen from video results are poor enough on their own to warrant concern.

Hopefully, like last time, this is something that Google is able to fix with an update. We’ve reached out to Google for comment on this story, and we’ll update if any is provided. At least external microphone support is coming, right?

The OnePlus 6T might be Verizon-compatible

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

The OnePlus 6T is shaping up to be a big deal for the plucky little Chinese smartphone maker. Not only will it sport a tiny notch and an in-display fingerprint reader, but the company is also taking a risk by ditching the headphone jack. We’ve heard rumors that the 6T could launch in T-Mobile stores in the US. Now, a report from PCMag suggests the 6T will work on Verizon.

PCMag’s Sascha Segan notes that we should take this with a “grain of salt,” but multiple industry sources claim the OnePlus 6T will work on Verizon’s network. The hardware will allegedly support LTE band 13 (the 700MHz block), which you need for reliable Verizon coverage. However, there would be no CDMA radio. The 6T could still have full Verizon functionality, though. If the 6T works on Verizon, it will operate as an LTE-only phone. Verizon’s LTE network now has more coverage than the CDMA voice network, and the quality is better anyway.

Whether or not the 6T is officially supported by Verizon is another story. The carrier has notoriously stringent certification processes, and OEMs have to pay through the nose. It’s unlikely Verizon will sell the phone in any case, but you might be able to activate a Verizon SIM in a OnePlus 6T if it gets certified. Otherwise, it may be possible to put an already activated SIM in the 6T for use on Verizon. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on October 30th.

Google Playtime 2018 event focuses on building better apps in smaller bundles

Posted: 18 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Google’s yearly invitation-only event for app and game developers took place today in Berlin and San Francisco today, and the key message was about reducing the size of app bundles. This new way of dynamically delivering Android apps was introduced this summer and support was added to Android Studio 3.2. Here are the main takeaways from Playtime 2018.

Same great apps, but smaller

According to Google, “smaller apps have higher conversions rates” — this makes sense, as larger apps are the first to go when you’re running low on storage, a common problem with low-cost hardware. When announced, app bundles were said to be capable of reducing file size by up to 35%, but there are some new reasons to embrace the updated method.

With no additional work for developers, app bundles are going to get even smaller. On average, these extra savings add up to 8% smaller files on download and 16% smaller on the device. As mentioned above, bundles can now be built using Android Studio version 3.2, as well as Unity 2018.3 beta. Another earlier access feature that’s currently being finalized will allow uploading of large app bundles (up to 500MB) without using expansion files. For more information see Google’s updated support page.

Easier ‘Instant Apps’

Up to now, developing an Instant App has meant publishing a separate installable app at the same time. Thankfully, you’ll no longer have to maintain two different apps, with support for a single app bundle coming to the Android Studio 3.3 beta. Google is referring to this as a “unified app bundle,” and it should make Instant Apps much easier to publish.

New ‘Try Now’ apps

It’s a handy way to to give apps a try before you buy, and Google Play is adding two new members to the ‘Try Now’ catalog. Umiro is a striking action puzzler by Devolver Digital, and Looney Tunes World of Mayhem from Scopely is an RPG feature everyone’s favorite 2D characters.

Fewer crashes, higher quality

More unification will be found in the Google Play console, combining the reports of Firebase Test Lab and the Android Vitals initiative to give developers even better insight. This will hopefully lead to more stable apps with more actionable solutions for when things do go wrong.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what was discussed at Playtime 2018. To read more about changes to app management tools (for retaining subscribers, flexible pricing, better metrics, and easier updates) and the Academy for App Success (with interactive educational courses), take a look at the full post on the Android Developers Blog.
