Moto Z Owners Won’t Get Keyboard Mod That Received $165K in Funding Because No One Buys Moto Z Phones

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:06 PM PDT

According to Livermorium, the hosts of an Indiegogo campaign that received nearly $165,000 in funding for a slider keyboard Moto Mod, the Moto Z lineup of devices from Motorola are "extremely unpopular in most places," and not only that, but they have seen, "no commercial interest in selling" this mod.

Motorola, if you feel a slight sting, that's pride messin' with you. /end Pulp Fiction reference.

Couple the apparent lack of interest from retailers and production issues related to part suppliers, the Keyboard Mod has been cancelled and will not be made available to those who funded the campaign. Instead, Livermorium notes they will be happy to issue refunds to all, though, they'd much rather you support an entirely new phone called Q-Device (not the final name). Targeting a Q4 launch, Q-Device will have a slider keyboard for everyone dying to relive 2009, and is it noted to be much slimmer than the Moto Z + Keyboard Mod combination.

In cancelling this product, Livermorium was very straightforward about all aspects, especially in the Moto Z isn't popular part. Here's exactly what was announced to campaign backers.

  • There is no commercial interest in selling / retailing Keyboard Mod from official Moto Mod sources.
  • It is very hard to sell this Mod via other retailers who wanted to help, as a phone accessory. Because Moto Z phones are very uncommon and have a very low % of market share.
  • We did not receive any external financial support from any entity, besides your contributions and donations, which has already been spent on 2017 for product development, moulding and sampling. We have been financing this project ourselves for pre-production, prototyping and component sourcing.
  • It is not feasible for us to do marketing ourselves because this product cannot be used alone, it has to be used with Moto Z, which are extremely unpopular in most places.

If you were looking forward to decking your Moto Z with this slider keyboard mod, we're sorry.

Gmail Offline Chrome app to be removed later this year

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

We've heard from customers that they want to use the same Gmail app whether they're online or off. Our new offline feature makes that possible, allowing you to search, write, delete, and archive up to 90 days of messages, even when you don't have an internet connection.

This native capability is easier to use and performs better than the Gmail Offline Chrome app, so we're removing it from the Chrome Web Store after December 3rd, 2018. This is part of our ongoing effort to move Chrome apps to the web.

In preparation, we recommend that affected G Suite admins who want to preserve offline access enable Gmail web offline for their domains and then encourage their users to do the following:

  1. Enable Gmail offline in their individual settings.
  2. Uninstall the Gmail Offline Chrome app.

To access Gmail while they're offline, users should simply navigate to mail.google.com in a Chrome browser (v61 or higher).

Please note that you can only use the native Gmail offline feature in the new Gmail.

Meeting organizers in G Suite Enterprise domains can enable live streaming on their meeting in Calendar and invite their audience.

With the stream URL, up to 100,000 in-domain users can watch the meeting from the web or their mobile device. Support for watching live streams on Hangouts Meet hardware will be coming in the next few weeks. When ready, meeting participants can start the live stream to allow everyone to watch.

The ability to add live streaming to a meeting can be controlled per organizational unit (OU) from the Admin console. New Content manager role coming to Team Drives

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

In October 2018, we will make several changes to membership roles in Team Drives. Most importantly, we'll add a new "Content manager" role, which will make it easier to manage files in Team Drives. When it takes effect, Content manager will become the default role for new members of a Team Drive.

Many organizations have asked for this role in Team Drives. To help them take full advantage at launch and reduce manual work, we're offering a one-time migration to move users who currently have "Edit access" to the Content manager role. G Suite admins can opt in to this migration by filling out this form before September 26th.

Content manager role will make file management easier

Users with the Content manager role will be able to edit, reorganize, and delete Team Drive content, but they won't be able to modify Team Drive membership or settings. Content manager will replace "Full access" as the default role for new Team Drive members.

There are some important differences between the permissions for Content managers and users with Edit access that are particularly helpful if you use Drive File Stream:

  • Unlike users with edit access, Content managers will be able to reorganize and delete files in a Team Drive.
  • Content managers will have read and write access to files in Drive File Stream, allowing them to easily manage Team Drive files through their computer's file system or the Drive web interface. Users with Edit access won't have this access and so will still need to access Team Drive files on the web to edit them.

Optional: Enroll your organization in a one-time role migration by September 26th

We recommend organizations with Drive File Stream enabled use the new role and consider opting in to the migration. However, no action is required in response to these changes. If you don't do anything, the roles of Team Drive members in your organization will not change in October. If you opt in to the migration:

  • All individual users and groups in your organization who are members of Team Drives with "Edit access" will become "Content managers."
  • External users who are members of Team Drives in your organization will not be migrated, unless they belong to a group that also contains internal users. If they belong to a group that also contains internal users and that group is a member of a Team Drive with "Edit access", those external users will be migrated to the Content manager role.

To opt in to the migration, complete this form by September 26th, 2018.

To access the form, you must be a G Suite admin for your organization and have received an email with the subject line "Introducing a new role in Team Drives." If you received this email but can't access the form, please contact G Suite support and reference ID: 78256060.

Migration will take place in October

If you fill out the form above and enroll your organization in the one-time migration, it will start on October 15th, 2018, for Rapid Release domains and October 29th, 2018, for Scheduled Release domains. It will be a gradual rollout, so it may take up to 15 days after those dates to reach all domains. When the migration takes place, users and admins will not be explicitly notified, but will be able to see the different role description when they look at their Team Drive membership.

Launch Details
Release track:

  • Migration applications open now until September 26th, 2018
  • Migration will start on October 15th for Rapid Release domains and October 29th for Scheduled Release domains (for organizations who've opted in only)

Editions:
Available to G Suite Business, Enterprise, Education, Nonprofit, and Enterprise for Education editions only

[Bonus Round] Vampire’s Fall: Origins, Rocket of Whispers: Prologue, Space Loops, Cthulhu Chronicles, Knights and Glory, and Man or Vampire

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn’t get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can’t wait for our weekly roundups, and don’t want to wade through a whole day’s worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we’ve got a fantastic old-school RPG, a heartfelt prologue to a captivating adventure game, an enjoyable endless runner, a Call-of-Cthulhu-based choose your own adventure, an odd tactical battle simulator, and a beautiful strategy RPG. Without further ado:

Vampire’s Fall: Origins

Early Morning Studio may not be a dev many of you have heard of, but that doesn’t mean the studio doesn’t make some great mobile games. Vampire’s Fall: Origins is the sequel/prequel to the multiplayer RPG Vampire’s Fall, and let me just say, it’s much improved over the original. The art is now more in line with what you would expect out of a gritty CRPG, and the turn-based combat feels welcoming while remaining challenging. If you are a fan of classic computer RPGs, then playing through Vampire’s Fall: Origins should make you feel right at home. Oh, and best of all this is a completely free game to play, so make sure you don’t miss out on this one.

Monetization: free / no ads / no IAPs

Rocket of Whispers: Prologue

Rocket of Whispers: Prologue is a free mini companion piece for OPUS: Rocket of Whispers. It serves as a fantastic intro to the OPUS series as you get to experience what it was like for the main character to wake up in a post-apocalyptic winter-filled world. You will soon learn that you are destined to take part in an important mission, and the hopes of the world are resting on your shoulders.

Space Loops

Space Loops is a simple endless runner, but instead of swiping on the screen to dodge obstacles, you have to tap on the screen to latch a rope onto passing rocks. You do this so that you can swing yourself to the next rock, and higher and higher you must go. Just make sure to watch out for spikes and other hazards, because if you touch too many, you’ll have to start over. The swinging mechanic works well, and I never felt too frustrated, though the gameplay can get pretty challenging the further you swing.

Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs $0.99 a piece

Cthulhu Chronicles

Cthulhu Chronicles is a choose your own adventure game that borrows from the setting of the famous tabletop RPG Call of Cthulhu. There are several investigators you can play as, and each has their own strengths, weaknesses, choices, and unique storylines. The game was developed in partnership with Chaosium Inc, so make sure you are ready to immerse yourself in one of the better interactive Lovecraftian Horror games on Android.

Monetization: free / no ads / IAPs from $0.99 – $19.99

Knights and Glory – Tactical Battle Simulator

Knights and Glory is a card-based hero collection game that lets you simulate large battles. There are dozens of cards to collect, and once you build out your army, you’ll get to try your hand at plundering your enemies treasure. But beware, as your many foes will also be able to return the favor in kind by looting your valuables. This is why you always have the option to join an alliance. This way you can share each other’s cards to better take on those pesky enemies, not to mention, fight for even bigger rewards.

Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $1.99 – $49.99

Man or Vampire

There is no doubt that Man or Vampire is a gorgeous looking game. The art design of this strategy RPG is unmatched on Android, and yet I am torn as to how much I actually enjoy playing it. Firstly, the translation is really poor. Grammar mistakes are hard to miss. Then you have the gameplay, which has solid roots, but sadly takes advantage of every distasteful monetization technique used in modern mobile games. This is a free-to-play title after all, and the devs surely want to make their money back, and then some. Still, if you dig gorgeous graphics and strategic gameplay, you may want to give this a look.

Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $4.49 – $89.99

Chaos Reborn: Adventures is a fantastic strategy RPG, but it will cost you

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

The turn-based strategy RPG Chaos Reborn started out as a Kickstarter project in 2014. X-COM's original creator Julian Gollop and his newly formed (at the time) studio Snapshot Games headed the campaign. It was eventually successfully funded, and then the game was released on Steam in 2015. Well, if you are a huge SRPG fan, then you’ll be glad to hear Chaos Reborn has made its way to Android. It is easily one of the better SRPGs released on the OS in the last few years, and you better believe it offers a solid challenge and deeply rewarding gameplay.

Okay, the first thing I would like to mention is that Chaos Reborn: Adventures may not be for everyone. There is no hand holding here. You will have to work for each and every one of your accomplishments. One-shot deaths are not unheard of, and learning the ropes isn’t going to come easy. A lot of trial and error is necessary to figure out the majority of mechanics. Luckily there is a single player mode where you can take your time to figure things out.

Of course, the meat of the gameplay takes place in the competitive multiplayer mode. It lends itself well to short matches thanks to mixing traditional turn-based strategy gameplay with some of the elements of poker. The only downside is that battles take place in real time. So be prepared to play through an entire online match before you start one. There is no asynchronous multiplayer gameplay to be found here.

There are no in-app purchases included, as this is a premium release after all, but it will cost you $9.99 to jump in today. Steam also has the game currently listed at $9.99, so at least the prices match up. There are features in this release that won’t be found on PC, but there are also features on PC that didn’t make it to this Android release. So things seem even in this regard. Now, I’m all for prices that are reflective of a premium experience, but I’m not really sure people are willing to pay the current cost so that they can play on a platform that undoubtedly has worse controls. That’s not to say the touch controls in this port are bad, as this is a game that lends itself well to them, I just can’t say they stack up to a physical controller.

There is no doubt that Chaos Reborn: Adventures brings solid single-player gameplay and an enjoyable online multiplayer experience to every SRPG fan on Android, but the cost is a little lofty. I’d hate to discourage people from jumping into such a good game, but I have to wonder if the price will eventually drop on this when it does not reach the sales numbers it should. You may be better off waiting a bit to see if this situation improves, but at the very least you know what you are getting if you do decide to plunk down $9.99 today.

Google is sending $5 Play credits to some users prematurely invited to Google One

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

The rollout of Google One was complicated. The service was announced and the app made available for download in May. Emails went out saying that the service was available to everyone in the US in the middle of August, but that still wasn’t the case by the end of the month. Now, Google is trying to make amends by sending some users affected by the messy launch $5 Google Play credits.

Reader Abby let us know that Google sent her an email apologizing for the invite going out “a little too early” and thanking her for her patience, along with five bucks to spend on Google Play. Not bad.

It seems the offer is only extended to users who had paid Google Drive plans and were invited to sign up for Google One before it was an option, then actually did so once they could. Google One’s rollout was a pain, but it’s hard to complain about free money.

Wobbly Windows Are Making a Comeback

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Compiz Wobbly Windows Effect

Remember these?

Wobbly windows and other desktop effects might be making their way BACK to the Ubuntu desktop, all thanks to a new project by a former Compiz developer.

If your first formative steps with Linux took place in the latter part of the last decade then a) you have my mutual sympathy on being old (sucks, doesn't it?) and b) there's a good chance you used wobbly windows and other OTT effects on your own Ubuntu desktop.

This particular superfluous desktop effect even made my list of five things we all miss about Ubuntu.

Fast-forward to 2018 and it appears that wobbly windows are getting ready to wobble once again!

Is a window really a window if it doesn't wobble?

All of the over-the-top animations we oldies look back on nostalgically, from the navigable 3D desktop cube to the folding 'close window' animation that turned apps into paper planes, were handled by the (then very powerful and very popular) Compiz window manager.

Wobbly windows are getting ready to wobble again thanks to a new project by a former Compiz developer

Ubuntu 11.04 to 17.04 shipped the Compiz window manager by default, and the Unity desktop was (after a stalled Qml port) implemented as a Compiz plugin.

Compiz effects were (spoiler: understatement approaching) regularly shown off in trippy YouTube videos where Ubuntu users would demo their gloriously bombastic desktops with animation stacked on animation.

— with Compiz, something an action as simple as opening an app could be transformed into a CGI showcase better suited to the climax of a superhero movie!

These days it's very rare to see Compiz mentioned, let alone demoed. Part of that is down to the march of modernity: Ubuntu has to use Mutter because it's required for the GNOME Shell desktop.

And while Mutter is very efficient at what it does, it does lack the advanced effects and animations that Compiz offered.

But do we really miss them?

To be blunt, the wobbliness factor — configurable from 'slight breeze on firm jelly' to 'quivering, indistinct mess' —  lacked any practical merit (few Compiz effects did, to be fair).

But gaudy graphical wow-factor did serve as a powerful showcase for what Linux could do that rival operating systems couldn't.

Forks of Compiz do exist (and work) but the software as a whole is very much 'of its time', with the modern GNOME Shell desktop not supported, no support for Wayland support, and so on.

And while a few effects have been turned into GNOME Shell extensions, they're neither as efficient or as advanced as users might want.

Libanimation: Compiz Reborn?

Compiz Config Settings Manager on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Which is where Sam Spilsbury, the former chief developer of Compiz, and his new window animation library come in.

The 'libanimation' project aims to implement wobbly windows and other effects on the modern Linux desktop in a way that lets third-party window managers use them.

We're talking window animations like zoom, bounce, glide,  and — be still my beating heart — the 'magic lamp' minimizing effect.

"Over time, more animations will be added," Sam writes in a blog post.

"I hope that the library will be useful to authors of other compositors or applications and help to preserve some of the more magical parts of Compiz as technology itself matches forward."

Not Usable Yet

It's important to point out that this isn't a 1:1 replacement for Compiz, nor is it a project trying to recreate every function of it.

On its own libanimation doesn't handle the "rendering or scene graph management" aspect.

But it can supply "the math" to other window managers and compositors, like Mutter, so that they can use it.

Sam knows his stuff: not only was he the lead developer of Compiz but was even hired by Canonical to work on it and later the Unity desktop plugin.

If anyone get my windows wobbling away again, it's Sam.

No tengas prisa.
