Will the August Smart Lock Pro work with my door?

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Best answer: The August Smart Lock Pro works with most single-cylinder deadbolts. Given that they’re the most common deadbolt in the U.S., it’s likely the August Smart Lock Pro will work with your door.

Amazon: August Smart Lock Pro ($233)

August Smart Lock Pro is highly compatible and easy to install

The August Smart Lock Pro is designed to be installed in such a way that you needn’t purchase new keys for your home. After a simple retrofit installation, you’ll be able to use the August Smart Lock Pro as well as your existing keys to lock and unlock your door.

The smart lock doesn’t work with all types of locks, however. If you have a mortise, rim cylinder, Medeco, or Mul-t-Lock, the August Smart Lock Pro probably won’t work with your door.

Via August Home

Given that the single-cylinder deadbolt is the most common type of deadbolt in the U.S., chances are good you’ve got one on your door. If you’re looking for more certainty, you can check out August’s list of compatible deadbolts here.

What’s the difference between a single-cylinder deadbolt and the other types?

The important distinction here is that a single-cylinder deadbolt is a separate mechanism from the doorknob. A mortise lock, on the other hand, doesn’t have that separation. Turning the handle from inside the door will pull back the deadbolt and the doorknob’s latch — that won’t work with the August Smart Lock Pro’s retrofit installation. You’ve probably seen a mortise-style lock when you’ve stayed in a hotel; some apartment buildings also feature this style of lock.

If you’ve got a thumbturn on the inside of your door and it operates the deadbolt separately from the latch, you’re probably rockin’ a single-cylinder deadbolt.

I checked my door and I think it’s a single-cylinder deadbolt but there’s a plate on the inside … am I good?

A metal plate on the inside of your door likely means bad news if you want to install an August Smart Lock Pro. Chances are, that metal plate is connecting the thumbturn and handle on your lock — that style of lock isn’t compatible with the August Smart Lock Pro.

I need a high-security deadbolt for my door. Are there any that are compatible?

Yes! In fact, August recommends the Primus Core or the Schlage B560 if you want a high-security deadbolt that works with an August Smart Lock Pro.

Our Pick

August Smart Lock Pro

The best smart lock for those looking for an easy way to add smart, wireless access to their home

With its simple installation and rock-solid locking mechanism, you can be sure your August Smart Lock Pro will be up and running reliably in no time. And thanks to its compatibility with Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, you can use your voice to control your smart lock via all three of the popular virtual assistants.

Did Google Just Show Us the Three Pixel 3 Colors?

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Pixel 3 in Mint, White, and Black lookin' fresh.

A Google promo page may have just revealed the three colorways that Google will sell its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in. The page, which is hosted on Google's withgoogle.com domain, features a "coming soon" message next to an outline of a phone that interactively shows off each color.

I've included them all here, but you've got a two-tone black model, white version, and then a mint that could be really fun. The white version showing a mint outer lines up with previous leaks too, all of which show a mint colored power button like the orange button we got on last year's Pixel 2 XL.

The website also color blocks the top portion of the phone to represent the two-tone look we've gotten used to in the Pixel line. And remember, we expect a glass back this time that should feature wireless charging.

Which color you want? You can see them all here by clicking the "G" logo on the phone.

If an Android Company Tried to Sell Us the iPhone Xr, We’d Mercilessly Mock Them

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Android users, we're a unique group. Some might call us cheap, but I think we just like value. We want phones that have everything, yet whose prices never rise. We want innovation, sometimes without having to pay for it. And if we go the budget route, we still expect a lot, because of companies like OnePlus who keep everyone in check. We also know our sh*t. We don't blindly dive in very often to brands, and yeah, we do know the processor and amount of RAM. That's not a bad thing.

I bring all of that up because Apple introduced a new phone this week called the iPhone Xr. I have no idea who this phone is made for, but I have seen a lot of praise for it. I've seen people call it Apple's most interesting product from this week's big event, that it'll help introduce some drama in Apple's phone line-up, that Google's Pixel 3 line should be scared (or something along those lines), and that this is the new iPhone to get. The thing is, if an Android manufacturer released an iPhone Xr, we'd seriously ask, "Are you serious with this?"

Let me describe to you the iPhone Xr in spec-speak, because that's what Android folk do. It has a sub-1080p display (1792×828). On top of its lower resolution, it's an LCD panel, which is largely thought to be an inferior smartphone display type to OLED at this point, even if it has a catchy name like "Liquid Retina" that's made to sound expensive with a Jony Ive voiceover. It has a giant notch. There is ample bezel around the entire device. It doesn't have a headphone jack or a fingerprint reader. There isn't expandable storage, but it does come in 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB variants. It's water and dust rating sits at a decent IP67. Wireless charging is onboard. It has a single camera at 12MP (OIS and f/1.8). The front camera weighs in at 7MP and f/2.2. Stereo speakers are here too, as is Apple's new top-tier A12 Bionic chip. The body is made of alu-min-nium and comes in fun colors, like yellow.

It starts at $749. SEVEN HUNDRED AND FORTY NINE DOLLARS.

First of all, look at this bezel. I mean, lol?

iPhone XR Bezel

Look at this unprotected camera hump that will never let this phone lay flat on a surface. Smh.

iPhone XR Camera

This is the sucker phone. It's the phone that Apple has already led people to believe is the well-priced new iPhone. And it's only well-priced because their other Xs phones are at the $1,000 mark.

The Samsung Galaxy S9, which is Samsung's finest outside of the Note category, starts at $720. Most days, you can find it for $100 off, so $620ish. Shall we run down its specs?

5.8″ QHD+ Super AMOLED display (no notch). 64GB, 128GB or 256GB storage options with microSD expansion. It has 4GB RAM. It has a single 12MP camera, but it's dual aperture at f/1.5 and f/2.4. The front camera is 8MP and f/1.7. It has not just wireless charging, but fast wireless charging and fast wired charging. It has stereo speakers and a headphone jack. Its water and dust rating is IP68. A fingerprint reader is there, as is an iris scanner and facial recognition. Like the Xr, it is made of metal and glass. It's colors aren't as fun, though. Still, it has everything one could ask for in a smartphone at a price point lower than the iPhone Xr, which is…Apple's budgety new…iPhone? Again, I have no idea.

I know that Android users really are thought of as being cheap and maybe I'm only furthering that take here. But good lord, the iPhone Xr is a pretty Apple package with some catchy Apple names surrounding a phone that no Android company could ever sell you and I. It's missing all sorts of items that a typical $750 Android phone would have. Hell, it's missing features a $400-500 Android phone would have. Again, this is a sucker phone. It's a phone you and I would be hard-pressed to consider and would laugh off stage. We wouldn't be writing opinion pieces about it being the one to get. We'd be asking, "Is this a joke?"

Chrome 70 adds fingerprint login support for Web Authentication, enables TLS 1.3, and more [APK Download]

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Chrome 69 was a massive update, as it brought a brand new interface to both desktop and mobile. Now that v69 is on stable, the beta channel has been updated to version 70. This isn’t as big of an update as the previous release, but it still has a few important improvements – particularly for security.

Web Authentication improvements

Chrome 67 added initial support for the Web Authentication API, which allows sites to use something other than usernames and passwords for logging in. For example, you could use a fingerprint or a Bluetooth key (like the Google Titan) as the sole login method. However, the feature was limited to Chrome on desktop platforms.

In Chrome 70, the API is enabled by default on Android. When you visit a site that supports Web Authentication, Chrome will prompt you to use a security key. Google says fingerprints will also work (on both Android and Macs with Touch ID), but I was unable to test that.

Shape Detection API

There are already a few ways for web apps to read barcodes or identify faces, usually with the help of machine learning JavaScript libraries, but those that can be detrimental to performance. To help make this functionality more accessible and improve performance, Google is adding its own shape detection functionality to Chrome.

The Shape Detection API is in Chrome 70 as an “origin trial,” meaning it’s not ready for widespread use. The API can detect three types of objects in images – faces, barcodes, and text. At the moment, compatibility varies from platform to platform, because this requires the host operating system to have the proper object detection APIs. Android and macOS support all three objects, but Windows 10 only supports face and text detection.

You can try a demo of the Shape Detection API here.

TLS 1.3

Transport Layer Security, or TLS for short, is the protocol that allows data to be transferred over the internet securely. When you’re on an HTTPS site, the data is most likely being sent over TLS. Chrome 70 includes support for version 1.3 of TLS, which was finalized last month.

A list of the changes can be found here, but in summary, it improves both efficiency and security. Fewer round-trips are required to establish a secure connection, so you might see a slight improvement in load times (if the site you’re visiting supports TLS 1.3). Here’s a graphical representation of the change from CloudFlare:

TLS 1.3 also drops support for a few legacy features, like support for SHA1 and MD5. Google said this on the Chrome Platform Status page:

TLS 1.3 was a multi-year project spanning contributions across the industry, academic research groups, and other participants in the standards process. We previously experimented with earlier drafts of the standard and, with the final standard done, are now excited to ship to it in Chrome.

Firefox v60 added support for TLS 1.3 (draft 23), which was released in May of this year. CloudFlare has also supported the standard since May.

Other features

Like always, Chrome 70 includes changes for both users and developers. Here are some smaller features that ship with this update:

  • The decoder for AV1 video is now enabled by default on all platforms.
  • The speech synthesis API will no longer work unless the page has already been interacted with. This is commonly used by spamware popups on mobile, since it wasn’t included in Chrome 66’s new autoplay policy.
  • If a page is in fullscreen mode and displays a popup, the page will now exit fullscreen.
  • AppCache no longer works on non-HTTPS pages.
  • On Android devices, the OS build number (e.g. ‘NJH47F’) is no longer in the user agent string, to prevent fingerprinting. Chrome on iOS will freeze the build number at ’15E148′ instead of completely removing it, to follow Safari’s implementation.
  • Opus audio is now supported in MP4, Ogg, and WebM container files.
  • WebUSB now uses dedicated worker contexts, which should improve performance.
  • Web Bluetooth now works on Windows 10.
  • There is a new sync dialog on desktop platforms (thanks Edric).

APK Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.
