How to view websites on your Mac that require Internet Explorer (or a PC)

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT

Once upon a time, the Mac and the Internet did not always get along. Long before Safari showed up, Netscape and Internet Explorer were busy waging a war to define the future of browsing — a future that didn’t often include the Mac. Most of the time, Mac users were stuck using browsers one or two versions behind their Windows counterparts, with no access to popular plug-ins essential to browsing various parts of the Web.

It was a dark day for the rebellion.

Thankfully, that age is over and gone: The Web is largely bedrocked on HTML and CSS now, with only the occasional need for a plugin — and all the major ones are Mac-compatible. That said, there are still a few websites stuck in the dark ages for one reason or another, requiring Internet Explorer (which has been since discontinued for the Mac) or a Windows PC. While this sounds like a ridiculous case of webmaster insanity, I’ve seen this happen with quite a few job, healthcare, and government-related websites — built by organizations that don’t trust (or have time to learn about) other systems.

But you can get around most of these arbitrary restrictions with my favorite hidden menu in Safari: Develop > User Agent.

How to access websites that require a PC or Internet Explorer

  1. Launch Safari.
  2. Click Safari in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click on the Advanced tab.
  5. Check the “Show Develop menu in menu bar” setting, then close the Preferences window. The Develop menu should now show in your menu bar.

  6. Go to Develop > User Agent.
  7. If you need to pretend you’re using Internet Explorer, choose one of the Internet Explorer options.
  8. If you need to pretend you’re using a PC, choose “Google Chrome — Windows” or “Firefox — Windows”.

Note: If your browser options are grayed out, you may still have the Preferences screen open — close it first!

Doing so should get you through the website’s detection-checker. Of course, the page may still be using ancient codecs or plugins not supported by Safari — in which case, you might have to look into one final alternative: installing Windows on your Mac.

Best Flash Drives for Backing up your iPhone in 2018

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT

Fast, reliable, and ready to free up some serious space on your iPhone, the Omars iPhone flash drive is a favorite online for a number of reasons:

Omars flash drive (64GB) is able to transfer files at a terrific speed. Up to 80 MB/s reading and 35 MB/s writing speed makes it one of the best in the business. Besides, its app supports browsing in several formats such as TXT, PDF, PPT, WORD, EXCEL, JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, MOV, MP3 etc. It can let you back up your entire contact list with just a click. (Jignesh Padhiyar, iGeeksBlog)

The iPhone flash drive is designed with a standard USB 3.0 side and a Lightning connector on the other, making it a breeze to plug in, transfer, and store and share files between your iPhone and your Mac.

The Omars iPhone flash drive comes in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB but one downside? The plastic protectors on each end aren’t attached to the flash drive itself, so if you lose the little plastic nubs, you’re screwed. The price range starts at $23 and goes to $77 depending on the size you want, but you get the most bang for your buck with this li’l guy!

Dark Wave Adds Some Fun Twists to the Usual Endless Runner

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT

The fun and unique games brings a number of great twist to the usual endless runner. Playing the game should be familiar to anyone who has ever spent even just a few minutes in Temple Run or a number of other similar titles.

But along with having to change lanes to avoid enemies and other obstacles, the game's titular wave adds another issue to contend with.

In the game, there are five different chapters and a total of 50 levels. Each new chapter brings even more enemies.

When you've completed the game, an endless mode is unlocked. You can compete against other players in a global leaderboard.

Dark Wave is universal and can be played on the iPhone, all iPad models, and the Apple TV. It can be downloaded now on the App Store for $0.99.

As a nice touch, thanks to iCloud sync, you can start playing on one device and then pick up right where you left off on another iPhone or iPad.

Ride an ever changing wave of light in this minimalistic arcade challenge.

DEAL: 3-Pack of Samsung’s Connect Mesh WiFi is Just $90 Right Now ($210 Off)

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Mesh WiFi systems are one of those no-brainer upgrades you should all make for your home. Your single router that's tucked away in an office probably isn't covering your bedroom upstairs very well, and that sucks when you want to watch 4K Netflix.

If you haven't already made the investment in a mesh system, we've got a deal for you today. Samsung Connect, which is Samsung's mesh system, has been discounted to just $89.99 at Lowe's. If it sells out there, it's also $99.99 at almost all other retailers.

How good of a deal is that? Google WiFi individual units cost $129, but this Samsung deal is for 3 Samsung Connect units. That's nuts!

This is the Connect AC1300 model, with speeds up to 866Mbps over 5GHz and 400Mbps over 2.4GHz. You get to control all that is connected to your network with a Connect app, plus it acts as a smart home hub for controlling your smart home products.

This 3-pack of Samsung Connect is normally listed at $299.99.

Amazon Releases Show Mode Docks for Existing Fire HD Tablets, New Fire HD 10 Kids Tablet

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Amazon announced three new products this morning. There is a tablet designed for kids with the Fire HD 10 Kids, plus two Show Mode docks designed specifically for the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10.

The Fire HD 10 Kids tablet sports 10.1" Full HD display (1920 x 1200), 32 GB internal storage, and up to 10 hours of mixed-use battery life. It even supports expandable storage up to 256GB. With FreeTime Unlimited, kids get access to over 15,000 apps and games for fun and learning. The device comes with a free year of it, then FreeTime Unlimited costs $2.99/month.

Fire HD 10 Kids is priced at $199.

Show Mode Docks

When a compatible tablet (Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 8) are placed inside their corresponding dock, users get immersive, full-screen Alexa access. Think of these docks as attachments to turn your existing Fire HD tablet into an Echo Show. You'll be able to access all of Alexa's features, place calls, watch movies, and anything else you may need that your tablet and Alexa are capable of.

For pricing, the dock for Fire HD 10 costs $49.99, while the HD 8's dock costs $34.99. Amazon is also offering a package deal when you buy the tablet and dock together. It's $189 for an HD 10 + dock or $109 for an HD 8 + dock. Not bad.

OnePlus Sets Update Schedule for OnePlus 3, 5, and 6 That’ll Make You Happy

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:05 PM PDT

Updates are still a big deal worth talking about on Android, even as some of the bigger players in the game continue to ignore them. OnePlus, a company who once had a rocky update history, has slowly been improving in the area since the release of the OnePlus 3 two years ago. And today, they've committed further to improving their reputation for updates by releasing a schedule similar to Google's Pixel schedule.

An announcement from OnePlus addresses the new OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule, which covers the OnePlus 3 and 3T, OnePlus 5 and 5T, and OnePlus 6. The schedule states that all phones will receive a full 2 years worth of "regular software maintenance" updates, as well as an additional 1 year of "software security maintenance" updates.

The "regular software maintenance" releases are listed as including new features, Android versions, Android security patches, and bug fixes. In that additional 1 year of security patches, well, the phones will see security patches.

As for timing, OnePlus is committing to provide updates on a bi-monthly (every 2 months) basis for the full three years worth of support. This new schedule goes into effect immediately.

In case you were wondering how this will look for the OnePlus 3 and 3T, OnePlus says that they'll continue providing regular OTA updates until November of this year (2018), followed by an additional year of Android security patches.

That make you feel better about your OnePlus purchase?

Spend less time searching with new Google Docs features

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:04 PM PDT

We're making the Quick Access feature in Google Docs available to more G Suite users and are adding natural language search when you're looking for documents. We hope these launches mean you spend less time searching for documents and more time working on them.

Expanding Quick Access in Docs to more users

We launched Quick Access in Docs earlier this year to help users spend less time searching for the right documents and more time crafting ideas. We're now making this feature available to all G Suite users. Previously it was only available on a subset of G Suite editions.

Quick Access uses artificial intelligence to suggest relevant files in the right hand "Explore" panel of Docs based on your Google Drive activity and information in your document. You can use this to add related resources to a document you're working on, discover additional content that's relevant to projects, and more.

See our Help Center to find out how to use Explore in Google Docs.

Adding natural language processing to search in Explore

We're making the search in Google Docs' "Explore" panel easier by adding natural language Processing.

This means you can search in a more natural and intuitive way. Just describe what you're looking for, and Docs will find it for you. So you can search for things like "show me slides shared with me last week" or "show me documents I created this month" and Docs will find the best results. This is similar to the natural language processing used in other Google products and will show you relevant files and information from your Google Drive, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides files.

See our Help Center to find out how to search from inside a document in Google Docs.
