| Eero Home Wi-Fi System review: Simple setup, minimalist design Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:07 PM PDT
If you’re looking for a simple, minimalist designed, drop in replacement for your end-of-life Airport Base Stations with mesh Wi-Fi, you might want to have a look at the Eero Home Wi-Fi System. The first thing you notice about Eero is that its packaging and design have that Apple-like minimalist feel. Unsurprising since the people behind the Eero are former Apple employees. At approximately $400 is the simple setup and minimalist design worth the price of entry? Let’s see! ![]() Simple and straight to the point mesh Wi-Fi: Eero Home Wi-Fi SystemBottom line: Provides an attractive, minimalist design, Wi-Fi mesh home network quickly and easily. For consumers that have Wi-Fi enabled devices predominately. Ethernet users need not apply. Pros
Cons
What you’ll love about the Eero Home Wi-Fi System
Eero employs a tri-band mesh Wi-Fi technology allowing for load balanced Wi-Fi mesh connectivity throughout your home. The load balanced Wi-Fi radios work behind the scenes without user intervention allowing for excellent coverage and fast Wi-Fi speeds for all of your Wi-Fi enabled devices no matter which node you happen to be connecting to. Like other vendors, Eero allows for the adding of nodes, called beacons, as needed for your particular setup and requirements. During setup, Eero doesn’t assume you have a the Home System kit that comes with two beacons. It simply prompts you to continue adding nodes until you no longer have any to add. Although I’m not certain how many nodes can work together, Eero makes it painless to add as many as you need to provide coverage of your area. You use an iOS app to run you through the setup, update firmware and get your network up and replaced in little time.
What you’ll hate about the Eero Home Wi-Fi SystemThere isn’t much to hate about the Wi-Fi capabilities themselves as they work very well. However, my gripe is that Eero assumes no one wants hard line ethernet connections anymore. Perhaps for the majority of the world that may be true, but for me it’s a “must have” on my network. Not only should Eero provide more ports on the main router (a measly two ports when one of them must be used for your ISP? Really?), but they should also provide ports on each beacon for remotely connected hard line ethernet capable devices. Another pet-peeve is that Eero requires you to create/use an account for setup purposes. On top of this it asked for personal information like your phone number so that it cab verify you as the person setting it up. I understand that is likely used for being able to verify you as you remotely monitor and configure your home network, but frankly, have NO option to bypass an account just to setup a Wi-Fi network? That’s a big thumbs down for me. One last issue that was bothersome was that during setup, you need to run a placement test for each beacon you add to your network. The problem is that you don’t know if your placement is any good until after the test is complete. Mercifully the test took on 30 second but I had to repeat it three or four times before Eero allowed me to accept the placement in my home. Eero Home Wi-Fi System bottom lineThe Eero Home Wi-Fi System is beautiful. It fits into an Apple-centric network as if it was designed by former Apple engineers (fun fact, it was!). If you need full coverage of your home for your Wi-Fi enabled devices, then Wi-Fi couldn’t be simpler. The network speeds are fast and reliable and I must note that I didn’t have any hiccups or network dropouts during my entire week of testing whether it be using in-home streaming on Steam or my day to day network usage. However, I have a big problem with the need for an account during setup. Not only the need for an account, but for information that is frankly unneeded for simply setting up a Wi-Fi router. On top of this, the fact that Eero has decided to all but remove ethernet connections from the router (only one free port) and have zero ports on the beacons is a non-starter in my household. If you can get by those drawbacks, then the Eero works more than competently for network transfers. I couldn’t find a place in my home that saw slowdowns or hiccups regardless of what sort of network usage I was performing. Do I think the the minimalist design aesthetic is worth the near $400 price point? I can’t say it is. You might want to instead check out the Amplifi HD or the Linksys Velop to get more bang for your buck. | Tap wearable keyboard gains customizable keyboard layout support Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT Tap, the wearable chorded keyboard, is gaining in popularity. It’s an ever-evolving piece of hardware with a focus on getting developers in on the craze. This week, the Tap gains full support for customizable languages and key mapping with TapMapper. TapMapper, currently in beta, lets you as the user, create custom layouts (called TapMaps) that you can load onto your Tap and use how you want. You can also share your TapMaps with the rest of the Tap community so they can use it too! The TapMapper customization makes it possible to create additional keyboard languages, game controls, mobile device interfaces (like launching an app on your iPhone), and more. One of the most interesting aspects of this update is that your custom TapMaps can be shared with others. If, for example, you map controls for Fortnite (which apparently has already been done), you can upload your TapMaps to the Tap community page so that I can then download the custom layout to my Tap and use it to play Fortnite, too. It’s especially helpful for creating various language keyboards. By default, Tap only supports English, but anyone can map a keyboard layout and share it with the Tap community so everyone that wants to use Tap for that language can. Tap’s creator, Dovid Schick explains how it works.
I know Tap is a niche market. You’re not all going to go out and get one just to use it to play Fortnite, but for fans of chorded keyboards, this new customization feature is really going to open up the possibilities for you. If you already own the Tap wearable keyboard, you can start mapping your own keyboard layouts right now using the TapMapper tool. If you don’t own Tap, but you’re a fan of chorded keyboards, you can get your own set for $179. | Google Home is Down, Chromecast is Struggling Too (Updated) Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT ![]() At some point last night, Google Home and Chromecast units across this fine Earth stopped working. Google says they are working on fixing them both. Users who fired up a Home, Mini, or Max with "Hey, Google," were either told that "there was a glitch" and users should "try again in a few seconds," or that "Your Google Home isn't setup yet." As of the time of this post (10:44AM Pacific), many are still down. For Chromecasts, they are simply no longer showing up as Cast targets when inside apps. I'm still seeing SHIELD TV units as Cast targets, but Chromecasts have disappeared. There are numerous threads at Google's product forums (Home, Chromecast) with users experiencing the issues still. I've seen some mentions of their Home units being fixed, but I can tell you that none are working in my house. So if you are having issues with your Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max, or Chromecast devices, you are not alone. We'll update this post when Google issues a fix. UPDATE 11:46AM: Google is still working on both.

| Google Says We’re Still a Long Way From Duplex, AI-Powered Robot Calls Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:06 PM PDT ![]() At this year's Google I/O, Google showcased Duplex, an AI-powered program that users will access through Google Assistant to book reservations for various things over the phone. You simply give Google Assistant a place and time you want booked, then your Assistant will make a call to the business on your behalf. Recently, Google invited select members of the tech press to get a closer look at Duplex. During this meeting, press members were able to field actual calls from Duplex. For this example, Google had the press act as restaurant employees manning the phones, taking reservation calls from the AI-powered bot caller. According to Arstechnica, Duplex is every bit as awesome as Google showcased during Google I/O, but we learned a bit more about availability and other things. Google says Duplex is a ways from launch, which we're sad to report. Here's exactly what Google said.
If this is your first time hearing about Duplex, you'll want to watch the video below. It differs from the original Duplex we were shown at I/O in a couple of ways, but it's still cool. At the start of a call, your Assistant will now identify itself as Google Assistant and will also notify the 3rd-party that the call is being recorded. This should get Google past any privacy advocates, not that they're a bad thing. You'll also notice that Duplex sounds very human, even inputting "um" into sentences and pauses when it's thinking. For me, once the veil is lifted and Assistant is identifying itself as a robot caller in the beginning, the need for these things is gone. If I'm talking to a robot on the other line, I'm not going to be very patient when it starts pausing and throwing out "um" and "uh" just to make itself sound human. I get it, you're a robot calling me to make a reservation, can we just get on with it? I still think Google's work here is incredible and once launched will be loved by many, but something about that is irking me. Because we're still "quite a way from launch," we'll continue to keep you posted on Duplex's development. What do you think? Is Duplex something you're patiently awaiting? // Arstechnica The post Google Says We're Still a Long Way From Duplex, AI-Powered Robot Calls appeared first on Guaripete. | ||||||||||
