How to keep iCloud Photo Library from eating your iPhone or iPad’s cellular data plan

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT

While iCloud Photo Library is a great feature for viewing your entire library at a glance from any device, it comes at a cost: You need to have an internet connection to truly take advantage of the service’s cloud storage.

If you’re syncing and uploading your images over Wi-Fi, this isn’t a huge deal, but if you tend to look at a lot of images and video over cellular, you may want to take a look at your cellular usage and how to better control it. Here’s how to go about it.

How to pause iCloud Photo Library sync for the day on your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the Photos tab and make sure you’re in Moments view.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, press Pause next to the Uploading queue.
  4. Confirm by pressing Pause again.

To restart sync, you can press Resume; otherwise, your iPhone and iPad will resume syncing at the end of the evening.

How to adjust cellular settings for iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll to the Photos option and tap on it.
  3. Scroll to the Cellular Data option and select it.

There are two options for adjusting your cellular data settings regarding the Photos app and iCloud Photo Library:

  • Cellular Data: This toggle allows you to sync your most recent snaps and video to iCloud Photo Library via cellular data plan, and download images and video. That said, your iPhone will prefer to upload via Wi-Fi, and will only use cellular if your library hasn’t been synced recently over Wi-Fi.
  • Unlimited Updates: This toggle removes the caveat I mentioned above — with this toggle activated, your iPhone will sync over cellular data the same way it would over Wi-Fi.

In general, you shouldn’t need to enable anything but Cellular Data to download your older iCloud Photo Library images over LTE, or to occasionally sync new photos and video. That said, if you’re getting an error while trying to download an older image or video, you may want to temporarily turn on Unlimited Updates to properly download it. (Just remember to disable it again after the fact, lest you get a pricey data bill at the end of the month.)

How to quickly kill cellular data for the Photos app on iPhone or iPad

If you don’t want to fiddle with the more-granular settings available for iCloud Photo Library and just want to disable all cellular access for the Photos app, here’s how to do it.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the Cellular option.
  3. Scroll down to the Photos toggle and disable it.

Kontrast

The puzzler features seven beautiful surreal illustrations entirely in black and white, excelling in both visuals and sound design.

Gamers will need to be both curious and creative while playing to move shapes around and complete the puzzle.

Each puzzle is definitely different.

For example, one level ends when a ball rolling down a hill finds the way in the eye of the person in the illustration. And in others, you'll need to move, draft rotate, and even toss different parts of the puzzle.

OnePlus Announces Bullets Wireless Earbuds With Google Assistant, Priced at $69

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Announced ahead of the OnePlus 6 this morning, OnePlus unveiled the Bullets Wireless earbuds, the next iteration of its audio offering.

Described as lightweight and stylish, the Bullets Wireless connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Turning the buds on and off is controlled via a magnetic switch — whenever you connect the buds together, they turn off. When you separate them, they turn on.

Charged via USB-C, OnePlus claims you can get up to 5 hours of music playback from only 10 minutes of charging, which is incredibly impressive if accurate. To clarify, OnePlus says its fast charge tech is built directly into the buds, meaning there is no need to use OnePlus' proprietary power adapter or cable to get the benefits of fast charging. Overall, the buds are said to have up to 8 hours of charge when at 100% battery.

The Bullets Wireless come with smarts, too. By long pressing the center button of the in-line controls, you can access the device's "Google Assistant integration." After clicking, you can speak commands for playing music, getting weather info and things like that.

For sound quality, OnePlus uses Qualcomm's aptX, with the buds tuned to deliver high performance sound. Internally, OnePlus lists a moving coil driver unit of 9.2mm with "Energy Tubes."

Bullets Wireless will be available by the end of June for $69.

OnePlus 6 Now Official, Starts at $529 and Launches May 22

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT

OnePlus made the OnePlus 6 official this morning, with availability starting May 22 for the starting price of $529.

For specifications, OnePlus' latest flagship features a 6.28-inch display (19:9) complete with top notch, Qualcomm-made Snapdragon 845 processor, up to 8GB RAM (there are three configurations in total), up to 256GB storage, dual rear-facing cameras (16MP + 20MP) with OIS and Portrait Mode, 3300mAh battery, Fast Charging, USB-C, rear-facing fingerprint reader, water resistance, and OxygenOS 5.1 based on Android 8.1.

OnePlus 6 comes equipped with OxygenOS's gesture based navigation controls, which were introduced earlier this year. If you're ready to ditch on-screen buttons, now you can. For the hardware, OnePlus went with a glass back design, Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 to be exact. According to OnePlus, the OnePlus 6 should be just as resilient as its past devices that didn't have glass backs. OnePlus is also equipping the OnePlus 6 with Face Unlock, capable of unlocking your device in as little as 0.4 seconds.

During its press event, OnePlus stressed device updates, highlighting access to the latest Android P beta from Google. Should you be getting a OnePlus 6, you can gain access to the Android P beta right here.

OnePlus 6 starts at $529 for the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model. The 8GB RAM + 128GB storage option costs $579, while the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model will coat you $629.

Both Midnight Black and Mirror Black colors will be available starting May 22, but OnePlus' new Silk White option won't launch until June 5.

YouTube adds automatic ‘Music in this video’ credits

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT

YouTube videos with identifiable music will now feature credits complete with artist names and song and album titles in their descriptions. The information even includes a link to the artist’s official YouTube channel, where applicable. The music is identified automatically by the technology behind YouTube’s ContentID.

The feature is working on more than half a billion videos of all kinds—not just music videos—so if you hear music on YouTube, there’s a pretty good chance you can see what it is by checking the video’s full info.

“YouTube is committed to providing recognition to all of the people who contribute to the creative process, and this is just the beginning,” YouTube said in a blog post. The feature is live now on desktop and mobile.

Word is the first Microsoft-published app to hit 500 million Play Store installs

Posted: 16 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Cloud-based services like Google Docs have replaced old-fashioned word processors for some of us, but plenty of people still want to open Microsoft Word files. So many, in fact, that Microsoft Word for Android has hit the 500 million install milestone in the Play Store. That’s the first app published by Microsoft (not counting Skype) to reach that number.

For a long time, Microsoft kept its full Office apps off competing platforms like Android. When it became clear that Windows Phone wasn’t working, it branched out to Android and iOS. Word is ahead of the other Office apps like Excel and PowerPoint, which are still back in the 100 million or more category. Considering how many Word files show up in my email, that’s not a surprise.

The Word app is free to download, but some of the features won’t work unless you have an Office 365 subscription. Paying up adds features like track changes, page breaks, headers/footers, and more. It’s still a perfectly serviceable way to view and edit Word docs on your phone with just the free account.
