Best Alternatives to Apple’s Magic Keyboard in 2018

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:01 PM PST

Best Magic Keyboard alternatives

Every iMac and iMac Pro comes with a specially designed, Apple brand Magic Keyboard 2. You either love it or hate it (or maybe you’re indifferent to it, in which case, you probably don’t care about this article).

If you’re looking for a completely different keyboard than the Magic Keyboard 2, check out our roundup of the best of all types of keyboards on the market.

Best Keyboards for Mac

If you love the look of the Magic Keyboard 2 but don’t love the feel, or maybe you were hoping for more than what comes in the box, we’ve got a list of keyboards that have a very similar design, but offer something a little different.

Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

Maybe you love everything about the Magic Keyboard 2, but you really want a numerical pad and don’t want to have to plug it into your Mac. Good news everyone! Apple released a wireless Bluetooth Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad in the summer of 2017. If that’s the only thing you’ve been missing, your world is now complete. The Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad is nearly identical to the Magic Keyboard 2 except that it has a 10-key number pad and a couple of additional function keys and dedicated control keys. It’s the perfect solution for Mac users that need more keyboard functionality.

The Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad is available for $129.

Matias Wireless Aluminium Keyboard

Matias Aluminum Wireless Keyboard

If you’re not getting the Apple brand, Matias’ wireless aluminum keyboard is probably the closest alternative you can get. It looks very similar to the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and has a nice, comfortable slant for typing. You can also pair up to four different Bluetooth supported devices, including your Apple TV. 9to5Mac reviewed it in 2017 with much praise for it’s similarity to the Magic Keyboard 2.

The keys themselves, while not underpinned by the much-improved butterfly switches that are found on the latest MacBook Pro, feature significantly more key travel, and are relatively stable no matter where you press on a key. I found that I could type fast on this keyboard, and didn’t experience any out of the ordinary key input issues.

You can get the standard Matias Wireless Aluminum Keyboard in space gray, gold, silver, and rose gold, starting around $100.

There is also a newer, backlit version that comes in Space Gray.

Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750

Logitech K750

Logitech has an uncanny ability to make keyboards with the most Apple-friendly typing experience. The K750 is a hugely popular alternative because it’s a full-sized keyboard, complete with a very similar spacing pattern to Apple’s Magic Keyboard 2. Logitech’s specially designed concave keys are in place here. If you’ve never tried the concave keys, you’re in for a real treat.

Though it’s called “solar,” it actually charges up using any light, including a desk lamp in your hotel room. So you’ll never be without the ability to get a recharge unless you’re typing in the dark, in which case you should go to bed.

The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 costs about $55 and comes in silver. There’s a black model that is designed for Windows PCs, but if you must have black, it’s still a good keyboard.

Logitech Easy-Switch K811

Logitech K811

This little ditty is my personal favorite. It’s a compact keyboard designed with Mac in mind that has plenty of useful additional features. It’s just about the same size as the Magic Keyboard 2 with the same key layout but has the added benefit of being specially designed to also control features on your iPhone or iPad, like navigating to the Home screen and audio playback controls.

The K811 also features Logitech’s specially designed concave keys. It’s a comfort level that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

The backlit keys will adjust, depending on how bright the room is. Dark rooms get all the brightness, while more lighting in the room produces less brightness on the keys.

The K811 usually costs $99, but you can get it on Amazon for about $75.

Anker Bluetooth Ultra Compact Slim keyboard

Anker Bluetooth Ultra Compact Slim Keyboard

For a low-cost alternative to Apple’s Magic Keyboard 2, you’ll be happy with Anker’s universal Bluetooth keyboard. It’s a stout little guy measuring just 11.3 inches long. It uses the Magic Keyboard 2’s scissor mechanism keys, so your typing experience will be very familiar. Its size is only slightly larger than that of the MacBook Pro’s keyboard layout. It doesn’t come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it’s also only about $20. For the price, it’s the perfect alternative to the Magic Keyboard 2.

Your favorite alternative?

Do you use a keyboard that is a lot like the Magic Keyboard 2, but with features you find too important to be without? What’s your preferred model?

Updated February 2018: Added the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and the Matias Wireless Aluminum Keyboard.

Calzy 3 Brings Even Smarter Calculations in a Pretty Package

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:01 PM PST

Memory Area

The “Memory Area”

In Calzy 3, there’s a new “Memory Area” at the top of the screen. When you have calculated a result and want to reuse it in multiple calculations, just drag-and-drop it to the top area of the app.

When the time comes to reuse it, just drag it from the top of the screen to the operator button you want, and Calzy does the math. It’s super simple and intuitive, making it easier than ever before to reuse calculated results multiple times.

3D Touch For Scientific Mode and More

Previously, while Calzy had a scientific calculator mode, you had to rotate the device to landscape mode to use it. If you’re like me, you may have rotation lock on all the time because of unintended rotations while browsing something in bed. Fortunately, that’s a thing of the past.

Calzy 3 now makes use of 3D Touch buttons, so it’s easier to get access to what you want. To toggle scientific mode, just 3D Touch the gear icon, and then choose the scientific option — you can also go back to basic mode this way too.

On top of that, Calzy has 3D Touch shortcuts for toggling dark/light mode, currency rounding, and viewing the settings.

Customize Calzy Your Way

For the most part, the default keypad in Calzy works out well for me. But that may not be the case for everyone, so Calzy lets you customize pretty much everything.

Just go into the Settings and choose “Keyboard Layout.” Here, you can rearrange the buttons on the keypad into a layout that suits your needs. Perhaps you want the operator buttons on the left instead of right? No problem. Just long-press and drag to reorder. You can do the same with the Widget and iMessage extension.

Calzy has a Light or Dark Mode, along with Extra Dark for those of you who prefer blacks instead of grays. You can also choose an accent color, in case the default green isn’t good enough for you. There’s also new app icon choices to choose from, if you want to match with your selected color accent.

Edit individual digits

Do More

If you’re calculating long expressions, you may end up making a mistake somewhere along the way while inputting the digits. Calzy lets users just tap-and-hold to edit a single part of an expression, so you don’t have to backspace the entire way or clear everything out.

There’s also a new “Spell Out” feature, where you can spell out a number in English or 65 other supported languages. Rounding numbers up is insanely useful in reality, and Calzy 3 has support for both decimal and currency rounding. This is great when you don’t want to use a number with over five decimal places, for example.

Calzy’s also able to keep a complete history of the calculations you’ve made. You can check the History, and then take action on individual expressions if you want through a long-press. If you add a label to one, it’ll appear in Bookmarks for easier reference.

Bookmarks can be found in iOS Spotlight Search, so you don’t even have to open up the app to check something. There’s also Touch/Face ID support for locked calculations, because finances are a private matter, after all.

Other Features

Since Calzy 3 is a universal app for the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, there’s iCloud sync for your settings, history, and bookmarks across all devices. Handoff is also supported, allowing you to start a calculation on one device and then seamlessly pick up where you last left off on another device.

For those who use Calzy on the iPad, there’s Slide Over and Split View support, as well as Drag-and-Drop into other apps. External keyboards are also supported for those heavy-duty calculating sessions. Calzy 3 also has native support for English, German, French, Russian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.

Math Has Never Looked So Good

While the default Calculator.app may be enough for many, Calzy 3 offers a beautiful design and intuitive, smart features to make calculating things easier than ever before. It’s one of the better calculator app options out there on the App Store, and this huge 3.0 update makes it better than ever.

Calzy 3 is a free upgrade for previous users. If you haven’t used it before, you can get Calzy on the App Store as a universal app for your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch for just $1.99.

Apple TV

February 23, 2018

After a major redesign landed earlier this month, the YouTube app for Apple TV has just been updated with some notable improvements to address user complaints.

The biggest change is a modified subscription tab. Instead of needing to scroll horizontally through a long list of channels, the grid style should make it much easier to find the content you're looking for.

And while not mentioned specifically in the release notes, a Reddit user was able to find some nice changes to video scrubbing that makes use of the Siri Remote.

YouTube for Apple TV can be downloaded now on the tvOS App Store for the fourth-generation Apple TV and Apple TV 4K.

Earlier this month, a native Apple TV app for YouTube TV subscription service also landed.

Mofin: A New Wireless iPhone Charger For Your Car

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

The Mofin, called the "world's best gravity wireless charger," offers a unique triangle-fixed design. In doing so, it holds your phone firmly even when you're turning or at a speed bump.

Thanks to Qi inductive charging technology, the Mofin can charge your devices wirelessly without the need for power cords. It works with iPhone X, iPhone 8/8 Plus, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8+, and any other Qi-compatible phones.

According to the Mofin Kickstarter page:

Compared with the mainstream wireless chargers in the market that charges slowly, Mofin offers a better solution. The conversion efficiency of Mofin has increased up to 80%, which is faster than most wireless chargers since they can only reach 60%. With the 10w fast charging, Mofin can charge faster a lot compared with the 5w chargers.

The first Mofin wireless iPhone charger orders are expected to ship in April. Each device is priced at $49. Through the Kickstarter project, you can purchase one for around $24.

We were lucky enough to receive a Mofin for review purposes and will let you know what we think of the device in the coming days. Until then, you can learn more about it by visiting the Mofin Kickstarter page.

You Now Have Our Attention, Sony

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

We recently learned that Sony would be drastically changing up its hardware design, and thanks to a new leak, we're seeing just how much Sony is switching things up. Thanks to VentureBeat, we're getting our first good look at the Sony-made Xperia XZ2, plus learning details about its smaller brother, the Xperia XZ2 Compact.

As we can see from the image above, the XZ2 is unlike all other past Xperia devices, with curved edges and notably large display with somewhat minimal amounts of bezel.

Yes, Sony, this is what we've wanted!

According to VB, the Xperia XZ2 features an aluminum frame, 5.7″ FHD displays with Gorilla Glass 5, Snapdragon 845 processor, 19-megapixel camera (f/1.8), rear-facing fingerprint reader, S Force front-facing stereo speakers, a currently unknown rating for ingress protection, 3180mAh battery, wireless charging, and Android 8.0+ Oreo at launch.

The smaller XZ2 Compact features similar specs, just in a smaller package. The XZ2 Compact's display size is listed at 5.0″, plus a smaller 2870mAh battery.

Sony will host its press event to unveil its new devices next week, at which point we should learn all of the important stuff such as availability and pricing.

DEAL: Woot has Google Pixel as Low as $280, Pixel XL as Low as $300

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

A reader asked me the other day if they should ditch their original Google Pixel or Pixel XL for the Essential Phone, since there are always so many good deals on the Essential Phone. I told them, no. I did that because they wanted a great camera and there still aren't many phones that can best even the original Pixel phones in that department.

So if you want a great camera and don't have a ton of cash to spend, we've got a great deal for you today. Woot is offering up both the smaller Google Pixel and larger Pixel XL with huge discounts. The discounts are likely there because each is refurbished, but I don't know that that would deter me if I had a $300 budget and wanted a phone this good.

UPDATE: As was noted in the comments, this is listed under Woot's "Scratch & Dent" category, so that does indeed mean there could be minor scratches or dents or scuffs. Specifically, "they may have minor cosmetic blemishes to the body of the unit and surface scratches on the screen."

Woot's deal includes the Pixel with 32GB or 128GB and in any color (black, white, blue), starting at $279.99 (32GB) and topping out at $314.99 (128GB). If you want the bigger Pixel XL, they've also got 32GB or 128GB versions and all colors. The 32GB model is $299.99 and the 128GB model is $329.99.

These phones are listed as being the US variants that work on all carriers, including Verizon. In the box you'll get the phone, an AC adapter, and Type-C cable.

Come on, those prices are nuts.

IFTTT has added a Cortana channel, plus a couple of other services

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

Over the past week, IFTTT has added 3 new channels to its hundreds of supported services for smart integrations and automations. Two of them are little known: SURY Assistant and ELA Smart Lighting, but the third one is quite important: Cortana.

Like the Google Assistant and Alexa channels, the new Cortana one has dozens of applets you can instantly try, as well as 4 triggers available: say a specific phrase, say a phrase with number, say a phrase with text, say a phrase with number and text. There are no actions available, so you can’t make your Wemo slow cooker for example notify you through Cortana when it’s done cooking. You can, however, ask Cortana to set a specific cooking time on the Wemo slow cooker.

To give it a go, you need to have an IFTTT account, which at this point is really worth having given how many possible links it creates between services and apps that normally don’t talk together, then you connect your Cortana account and you’re ready to use a ready-made applet or create your own.

Samsung Max is a reincarnated Opera Max VPN with a new coat of paint and a crappy so-called ‘Premium mode’ [APK Download]

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

You might recall the sudden death of the Opera Max VPN service from back in August. It turns out that Samsung somehow acquired it, and it’s just been re-unveiled as ‘Samsung Max.’ The Korean company has given the app a new coat of paint, but it’s also made the app worse in several respects.

At first glance, it doesn’t look like Samsung messed with the app much aside from the interface, which is slightly touched-up to align with Samsung’s design language, but there’s more than meets the eye. The app still retains its five tabs on the bottom for the navigation, with a Privacy Protection Mode and Data Saving Modes for Wi-Fi and mobile data alike, but the fifth tab for app management is now restricted unless you opt into what Samsung is calling ‘Premium mode.’

Thanks, but no thanks.

Samsung is pushing Premium mode as a way to reduce the number of ads and get the bonus of an app management feature, but it’s honestly pretty crappy once you really look at it. Opera Max never blocked off app management, and now you basically have to enable an ad-filled lockscreen that activates while charging to get rid of it. On top of that, it’s just poorly-designed, and you can’t change the default space wallpaper for it. On top of that, it pushed me a recommendation for ‘Facebook Ultra’ when I opened my Facebook app. Don’t you just love when you get random popups in other apps?

The toggle for Premium mode in the Premium mode section doesn’t even work properly; you have to go into settings and disable it from there if you really want to make it stop. Interestingly, if you first install the Opera Max APK and then install Samsung Max, app management isn’t blocked off by Premium mode, and the lockscreen doesn’t have any ads when you do enable it.

Cringe.

The app is filled with ads, which isn’t all that surprising given that Opera Max had the same ads, but Samsung is restricting this to its Galaxy devices to download from the Play Store. Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s a bit wrong that Samsung is still serving ads to those who paid up to $1000 for their smartphones. I could understand if the company would limit ads to non-Samsung phones that downloaded the app via a third-party like APK Mirror, but that’s not the case. Samsung isn’t even trying to disguise the fact that this is a massive money-grab.

Samsung Max is only supposed to be available to Samsung devices, but if you want to install this horrid app for whatever reason, we’ve got the Samsung Max APK over at APK Mirror. It’s still listed under Opera Max for now since the package name hasn’t changed, but you can tell Samsung Max apart from older Opera Max builds by the blue icon. It’s going to be preloaded on all Galaxy A and Galaxy J smartphones in India, Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam, which is depressing to hear. Hopefully it can be disabled on those phones; I personally couldn’t wait to uninstall this on my devices. It’s the kind of app that you just want nothing to do with.

Google Lens now rolling out to more devices

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

Google Lens, a machine learning-powered image analyzer, was first announced at I/O 2017. It currently exists in both Google Photos (to scan existing photos) and Assistant (to scan in real-time), but both methods have required a Pixel phone. Alongside some ARCore announcements, Google revealed that Lens would be rolling out to more Android devices and make an appearance on iOS.

Lens in Google Photos will soon be available to all English-language users on both Android and iOS. You’ll be able to scan your photos for landmarks and objects, no matter what platform you use. In addition, Lens in Assistant will start rolling out to “compatible flagship devices” over the coming weeks. The company says it will add support for more devices as time goes on.

Google Lens in Assistant

Beyond the expanded compatibility, Lens is receiving some functionality improvements. Google says Lens will soon be able to recognize common animals and plants, including specific dog breeds and flowers. You can find the original announcement from Google at the source link below.
