| YouTube TV: Everything you need to know! Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:06 PM PST YouTube TV, the streaming giant’s take on a live, internet-based TV service, has officially launched in the United States. Available on both iOS and Android, YouTube TV offers live streaming content from traditional broadcast networks, as well as several cable channels, for $35 per month. Just like similar services from AT&T and Sling TV, YouTube TV lets you watch its live content on your iPhone or iPad wherever you are. Here’s everything you need to know about this new streaming service. So what is YouTube TV?It’s YouTube’s streaming TV service, similar to offerings like Sling TV or AT&T’s DirecTV Now. With YouTube TV, you can watch live programming from broadcast networks like NBC and ABC and cable channels like ESPN and FX. There are also channels that you can add on to your subscription. How is this different from a cable TV subscription?Once you’ve signed up, you can take YouTube TV with you wherever you go. While many cable services offer apps that let you stream channels around your home, the channel selection often gets cut down when you head out. Additionally, there are no commitments or contracts when you sign up, and you can cancel at any time. Finally, YouTube TV costs a lot less than the average cable subscription. How much is this going to cost me?For $35 per month, you get access to 40 channels, with more to be added over time. You can also add Showtime for another $11 per month and Fox Soccer Plus for $15 per month. When you sign up, you can get a free one-month trial, after which you’ll need to pay. So exactly what channels am I getting for my money? The channel lineup for YouTube TV at launch is as follows: Standard lineup:
YouTube notes that ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and The CW are available as video on-demand-only stations in some markets. For instance, it doesn’t appear as though The CW is available live in any market, while NBC is only live in a select few markets. Add-on networks:
Coming Soon:
What about DVR?YouTube TV’s cloud DVR lets you record shows without any storage limits, though you’ll only be able to keep your recordings for 9 months. So is it one person per subscription?Actually, you can have up to six accounts per subscription, great for sharing with family members or roommates. Keep in mind, however, that you can only watch up to three streams at once. You mentioned iPhone and iPad, but what about Apple TV?At launch, the only way to watch YouTube TV on your television is with a Chromecast, though of course if you have a Chromecast-enabled TV already, you’re set. The app doesn’t support Apple TV at this time. However, YouTube does say that they’ll support “even more connected TV devices” later this year, so take that for what you will. Sounds good. Where do I sign up?You can sign up on the YouTube TV website or in the YouTube TV app for iPhone and iPad. Remember that YouTube TV will have to be available in your current geographic location in order for you to sign up. Where is YouTube TV available?YouTube TV may have launched in a small handful of markets, but the company has done a good job of quickly expanding into new markets around the United States. Currently, you’ll find YouTube TV in the following areas:
If your city isn’t on the list, you’ll still need to wait before you can take advantage of YouTube TV. Why do I have to wait, exactly?YouTube needs time to cut deals with the different content providers that it wants to offer through its service. Part of the appeal of YouTube TV is that it’s a live TV service that doesn’t act like a traditional cable bundle. Part of this kind of experience for most people is the ability to watch broadcast networks like NBC and CBS live, particularly important for programming such as news and sports. Generally, YouTube needs to make deals with each local broadcaster affiliate as well, rather than CBS, NBC, or others directly. And even when the company has found more success in its initial stages than competitors did, we still see channels like NBC and The CW only available on-demand in a wide range of markets. Alright, fine. When will it come to my area?YouTube doesn’t have a schedule for when it expects to roll the service out to new cities, but you can sign up here to be alerted when it is available. Additionally, if you try to sign up through the app only to find that YouTube TV is not available in your area, tap the Alert Me When Available button, enter your email address, then tap Submit to sign up for an alert. Any other questions? If you have any other questions about YouTube TV, let us know in the comments. Update January, 2018: Added all of the new cities into which YouTube TV has expanded. Also updated the channel list to reflect the current lineup. Powered by WPeMatico The post YouTube TV: Everything you need to know! appeared first on Guaripete. |

| Apple Releases iOS 11.2.2 to the Public With Security Fixes Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST For proper use of this site, you need to enable javascript in your browser! ![]() Apple’s Software January 8, 2018 Apple has just released iOS 11.2.2 to the general public. It can be downloaded now on an iPhone or iPad by going to General > Settings > Software Update or through iTunes. The software offers a number of improvements to mitigate the "Spectre" vulnerability that was first publicized last week. The other vulnerability, "Meltdown," can also affect iOS devices. Apple said that iOS 11.2 contained mitigations for that issue. Since both issues are hardware-based, it requires software patches to mitigate any possible effects. There have been no known exploits of either in the wild. Here's more about the update in an Apple security document:

| Google Further Details Android TV Oreo Update With Redesigned UI Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() Back at Google I/O, Google showed off the next big UI update for Android TV that would arrive with Android Oreo. You probably know little about it and likely have never seen it because no Android TV has it outside of the Nexus Player, a device you can no longer buy. With that said, Google is doing big things with Android TV at CES 2018 this week and has provided a refresher, through their Google Play Dev blog, on the big changes that are coming. Our guess is that this refresher is here because the update is closer than ever to rolling out on current and new Android TV products. The biggest change here is the layout of the home screen. As you can see below, apps are now featured vertically, with their own content listed next to them horizontally (Google calls it "channel-based"). This allows you to not only see the apps you use the most, but also the available content. While the layout will take some getting used to, it should help with discovery, since content from apps are now shown without having to enter the app. These channels can be programmed by app developers to show promoted content, a specific order of programs, and branding. But there can be custom channels too, potentially by topic or user interest. That means a custom channel experience on your Android TV home screen. And finally, the new Android TV design features animated previews of programs as they are highlighted when you browse. Think of it like YouTube's live preview feature on desktop that shows you a short clip when you hover your mouse over a video thumbnail. Today's blog post from Google didn't say when we should expect Android Oreo to arrive on more Android TV sets, but again, if they are once again pushing the message of it, I'd imagine they want to start rolling it out. Plus, new products are most definitely launching with Oreo inside. Powered by WPeMatico The post Google Further Details Android TV Oreo Update With Redesigned UI appeared first on Guaripete. |

| Ring Announces New Stick Up Cams, Smart Lighting, and Shipping Estimate for Ring Alarm Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() Ring, the company you probably know because of its early entries into the smart doorbell arena, now sports a full ecosystem of smart home products that aim to keep your residence secure. To open CES 2018, Ring has announced new Stick Up cameras, outdoor smart lighting, and an estimated ship time for their Ring Alarm system, which is a rebranded Ring Security System that had some legal troubles. For the new Stick Up cameras, you have two: Stick Up Cam and Stick Up Cam Elite. What's the difference? The regular new Stick Up Cam can run on batteries, while the Elite needs to be wired in. Why does it need to be wired? Because the Elite features advanced motion sensors that likely need a lot more than battery power to run properly. Otherwise, these redesigned Stick Up Cams are mostly the same, are sold as being good for both indoors and outdoors, provide 1080p video, 2-way audio, and are weatherproof. As for the new smart lighting, it's called Ring Beams, likely based off the company Mr Beams, which Ring just acquired. These lights integrate with the Ring app and other Ring products to intelligently light up as you need them to. They are wire-free, energy efficient lights that include pathway, flood, and step options. Finally, Ring Alarm is Ring's $199 professional monitored security system that includes a base station, keypad, contact sensor (for windows and doors), passive IR sensor, and Z-Wave extender. If you need more Ring goodies, you can add flood/freeze sensors and smoke alarms as well. Ring Alarm will being shipping in Spring 2018 and will include a monthly $10 fee. That monthly fee gets you professional monitoring and unlimited camera feeds. We don't yet know when the new Stick Up cams or Beams will arrive or how much they'll cost. To check out the full line-up of Ring 2018 products, checkout the video below. // Ring Powered by WPeMatico The post Ring Announces New Stick Up Cams, Smart Lighting, and Shipping Estimate for Ring Alarm appeared first on Guaripete. |
| First Alert’s Onelink Safe & Sound will keep you from suffocating with Alexa or Google Assistant Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST As expected, this year’s CES is all about the smart assistant and smart speaker. The latest company to jump onboard isn’t quite what you’d expect, though. First Alert, commonly recognized as a manufacturer of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, has just announced its new Onelink Safe & Sound, which combines those previously mentioned alarms with high-end speakers and your choice of Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Assistant. At first glance, First Alert’s new smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarm might seem like a spaghetti-on-the-wall approach in the rapidly growing smart speaker market, but it’s actually an ingenious combination. If you’ve got a location for a smoke detector, you can easily swap it out with the company’s new Safe & Sound and better take advantage of all that wasted space on your ceiling. Then you won’t have to worry about placement, obstructions, or volume as much as you would with a normal smart speaker. It’s also smart enough to provide you multiple forms of alerts in the event of smoke or carbon monoxide, too, sending messages to mobile devices with info on the type and location of the emergency. And, of course, you get all the same Alexa or Google Assistant features you’d expect. Although the Onelink Safe & Sound has a 10-year battery backup (presumably just for alarm functionality), you’ll need to be able to provide it with the power to use it, though it includes adapters for different configurations. Right now, the only SKU listed on First Alert’s site is for the Alexa-powered model, but CNET claims there should also be a Google Assistant version coming. Pricing and availability remain a mystery, with no dates or prices posted at First Alert’s site, and no listed retail sellers (yet). Although this particular idea seems like a good one to me, we’ll have to see what other unconventional voice assistant hardware combinations pop up as CES continues. Personally, I’m rooting for the smart codpiece, for that anachronistic look.
