| Everything you need to know about Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST In the United States, there are a lot of companies that can get you and your phone online, but most people use one of the four biggest: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. Choosing between them can be difficult. Your first priority should be what service works best in the places you spend your time. It’s not worth saving $10 a month if the service is bad. Once you have that sorted, you can look at what each company has to offer and the prices they charge for it. More: Which unlimited plan should you buy? Let’s take a look at Sprint to see what they can give you and what it will cost. Note: The details of this plan are current as of January 5, 2018. Sprint Unlimited Freedom plan details
Note: These features apply only to new accounts. Sprint’s definition of Unlimited Data means that after you use 23 GB in a single month, your service can be slowed down if you’re in a congested area. You’ll hear the word throttled used here but you need to know that it’s only a temporary deprioritization of your data connection when you’re in a busy area. It may not happen at all depending on how many other customers are using the same towers.
Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan applies only to new customers who are also buying (outright purchases or financing) or leasing phones from Sprint at the time of purchase, and credit approval is required. There is an activation fee of up to $30 per line and the Unlimited Freedom Plan requires eBilling. Current customers can call 1-866-275-1411 with questions about changing their plan. Sprint offers a 14-day satisfaction guarantee and devices purchased on installments are subject to a $350 early termination fee. Additional lines can be added to a Sprint Unlimited Freedom plan. Every line has the same benefits outlined above and requires an equipment purchase. Currently, Sprint offers up to four lines for $100 per month, with a fifth line available at no extra charge. Here’s a pricing breakdown.
Sprint notes that this pricing lasts until January 31, 2019. After that date, your first line will still cost $60, while subsequent lines will break down like this:
Sprint Unlimited Freedom plan add-onsSprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan is a no-frills option at a low price. There are few extras and add-ons available if you want international options or a few extra features.
You can also add a subscription to Hulu’s limited commercial tier of service, which offers unlimited access to the streaming service’s vast TV and movie library at no extra charge. Existing Hulu limited commercial subscribers can link their Hulu account to their Sprint account to take advantage of the offer. You only get one Hulu subscription per eligible Sprint account, and you cannot add a Hulu commercial-free plan or Hulu with Live TV plan. Sprint also will offer “unlimited access to exclusive artist content not available anywhere else” now that the company has bought one-third of Tidal, though exact details on this aren’t yet available. Updated January 2017: Added updated pricing information, including changes taking effect on January 31, 2019. Added a new overview graphic and a section about Hulu. | [Deal Alert] Get $100 off Moto Z2 Play ($399), plus discounts on Moto X4 and G5 Plus Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() Motorola is offering some nice discounts on several devices for an after-holiday sale, including a significant $100 savings on the Moto Z2 Play. Usually retailing for $499, an unlocked Moto Z2 Play with 64GB of storage is going for $399 at Motorola’s website, in either dark gray or gold colors. Best Buy isn’t offering the unlocked version, and even the unlocked version without a U.S. warranty is still $75 more expensive at Amazon. This Z2 Play also has a Snapdragon 626, 4GB of RAM, a 5.5-inch, 1080p AMOLED display, and a 3000mAH battery. It sports a 12MP rear camera and 5MP for selfies. It can also take advantage of the Moto Mod ecosystem of accessories, if that’s your thing. In his original review of the Moto Z2 Play, AP’s Ryan Whitwam evaluated the device as a decent phone, but not worth the price. With $100 off, maybe it feels even more decent. Motorola has also slashed $50 off its standard Moto X4 from $399.99 to $349.99, and Best Buy has matched it. Its Amazon Prime edition with lock screen ads is also $50 off, which drops its price to a G-series-like $279.99. The Android One variant of the Moto X4 at Google Fi, meanwhile, is going for $75 off, down to $324. Ryan drew a similar conclusion about the X4 as he did the Z2 Play: Not bad, but too expensive for what it offers. Finally, for the budget phone with a heart of gold, Moto is taking $20 off the 32GB Moto G5 Plus ($209.99) and $40 off the 64GB version ($259.99). These prices are also matched by Best Buy. But if you don’t mind Amazon’s lock screen ads, the 64GB version is available there for a very attractive $199, the same as it was before Christmas. The discounts at Motorola’s website end on January 20. If need a phone without breaking the bank, or have a moral objection to spending upwards of a grand on a flagship device (I feel you), these discounts aren’t a bad way to go. | Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST As phones get more and more expensive, it seems logical that more and more people are purchasing insurance for peace of mind. Verizon seems to be aware of this, and it’s upping the price of its Total Mobile Protection plan from $11 to $13 per month for phones starting very soon. However, the deductible for phone replacement is dropping by quite a bit to $89. Whereas Total Mobile Protection previously cost $11/month for each smartphone, it’ll cost $13/month starting January 25th for new customers and March 6th for existing ones. This price increase is probably due to the increasing cost of new smartphones to repair and to replace. An extra $2 per month won’t break subscribers’ wallets, but it’s an extra $48 over two years, the length of time that a lot of people on carriers keep one phone for. Additionally, the deductible for lost/broken phone replacements has been lowered to $89 for over 150 models. Verizon isn’t clear on which phones exactly will fall under this $89 price, though the current deductible for flagships like the Galaxy Note8 and iPhone X is $199. Because of Verizon’s wording, it’s possible that the deductible for the priciest phones is still higher than $89, but I personally don’t think that’s likely. This is going into effect on January 25th. The deductible for cracked screen repair is the same $29 that was adjusted back in October, and there are now 300 authorized repair locations and 170 cities in which a technician can meet you in the US (up from 296 and 152 since October 2017, respectively). If you’re a Verizon customer who tends to drop your phone a lot and/or you don’t like using cases and screen protectors, Total Mobile Protection might be worth a look, even with its new higher monthly rate. | Messaging app Imo passes 500 million downloads Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST The instant messaging app Imo has crossed the threshold of a half-billion Play Store installs, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ve never heard of it. Imo was launched by former Googlers way back in 2010, and its claim to fame was offering an instant messaging platform that gathered all of your other messaging accounts in one place. That included AIM (RIP), Skype, Facebook, Google Talk, and yes, even MySpace. But with the rise of challengers like WhatsApp, Skype pulling its access, and the “technical headaches” of supporting all these disparate services, Imo ended its support for third-party platforms in 2014. As reported by Harry McCracken at the time, Imo trudged on ahead to focus on its own network for text-based chatting and video calls. Though seemed to have completely dropped off the radar, the service has been growing steadily for years. According to AndroidRank, the Imo Android app does particularly well in countries such as Singapore, India, Sweden, Russia, and ranks number 2 in the communications category in Bangladesh. Not many apps reach 500 million installs, so this is a particularly remarkable feat for a service that many had all but forgotten about. | Ubuntu 17.10 Will Be Re-Released on January 11, Will No Longer Brick Laptops Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST Ubuntu 17.10 will be available to download again from January 11, 2018. Canonical pulled Ubuntu 17.10 downloads from the official Ubuntu website last month following reports that the release could leave some laptops unable to boot. 'The bug left some Ubuntu users unable to boot their laptop at all' Lenovo laptops were among those most affected by the 'bug', though reports were also filed by users of devices from other computer vendors, including Acer and Dell. The bug could corrupt the BIOS of an affected laptop, leaving the user unable to save settings or make changes. In extreme cases the bug left users unable to boot their laptop at all. Ubuntu Lenovo BIOS Corruption: The FaultThe cause of the issue? The Intel SPI driver. This innocuous sounding low-level level kernel feature gives Linux the ability to upgrade BIOS firmware on a motherboard directly. 'You don't even need to install Ubuntu to be affected; the bug can be triggered just by booting a live image' In the upstream Linux kernel the Intel SPI driver is disabled as it's not yet considered ready for use. The driver's documentation even warns that it shouldn't be enabled "unless you know what you are doing" at it can overwrite SPI flash which "may render the system unbootable". Canonical, for reasons unknown, chose to enable the SPI driver in the kernel used by the Artful Aardvark. Worse still, it turns out users didn't need to install Ubuntu to be affected as the bug can be triggered just by booting a live image. New Ubuntu 17.10 ISOsA "fixed" version of Ubuntu 17.10 will be released later this week according to Canonical's Steve Langasek. He says the new Ubuntu 17.10 ISO images disable the intel-spi driver at build time. A number of workarounds and software fixes have also been posted online to help those whose BIOS is already borked by the bug. If you're one of those affected by the 'bug' and are yet to find a solution, do try this:
In extreme cases where a software fix doesn't work the entire motherboard may need to be replaced. H/T Michael Y Powered by WPeMatico The post Ubuntu 17.10 Will Be Re-Released on January 11, Will No Longer Brick Laptops appeared first on Guaripete. |
| Waterfox 56.0.2 security update released Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST ![]() Waterfox 56.0.2 is out. The new version of the web browser patches security issues that made the round recently. In short: security researchers found flaws in processors that attackers can use to read data in memory that they should not have access to. The patching requires updates to firmware, operating systems and even other programs such as browsers. Microsoft released out of band security updates for Windows to address the issue and Mozilla released a patch for Firefox that mitigated it as well. Waterfox 56.0.2 incorporates the same patch that Mozilla released. Spectre, Speculative execution side-channel attack, relies on exact timing to function. Mozilla reduced the precision of some of the time sources that Firefox uses to mitigate the issue. Tip: The following articles may also be of interest to you: Waterfox 56.0.2
Waterfox includes the December 7, 2017 security patches for Firefox as well according to the changelog. Waterfox 56.0.2 includes changes and bug fixes as well. The biggest change in the new browser version impacts multi-process Firefox (e10s, Electrolysis). Waterfox will disable e10s automatically if add-ons are installed in the browser that are not marked as compatible with the multi-process architecture. It is unfortunately difficult to find out which of the installed add-ons are not multi-process compatible.
Here is what you need to do:
The remaining changes in Waterfox 56.0.2
Waterfox users should update the web browser asap to the new version to protect the browser and their data against exploits. You can run a check for updates with a click on Menu > Questionmark > About Waterfox. The browser runs a check for updates when you open the about window. The new version is available for all supported desktop operating systems on the website as well. | Firefox 59: UI options to block notifications, microphone, camera and location Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST ![]() Mozilla plans to roll out a change in Firefox 59, out 13.3.2018, that gives users better options to block notification, microphone, camera and location requests. More and more websites and services display prompts to users when they are accessed. Many want permission to send notifications to the browser and others may want access to the microphone, camera, and location requests.
Notifications can be useful on paper. They allow sites to push notifications to the browser even if the site in question is not open. Something like "hey we have a new post" or "XYZ is on sale" come to mind. The problem is however that more and more sites start to implement these. This means that users get more prompts to allow notifications and that is something that is highly annoying as most users want notifications from select sites only. The situation is a bit different when it comes to microphone, camera and location preferences. These are required for specific functionality. If you want to join an audio or video chat, for instance, you need to allow access to the camera or microphone for that. Part of the user base does not want notifications and does not use services that require access to a computer's camera or microphone. Firefox users have options to block these entirely, but only by using about:config.
The option to make these changes in the browser is helpful, but most users are never exposed to it unless they search for solutions actively on the Internet. Firefox 59: block permission prompts
Firefox 59 changes this. The browser ships with options to block notification, microphone, camera and location requests in the browser UI.
This allows you to block prompts that website might display otherwise. You can still allow some sites to access these features of the browser, but the process is a bit difficult. Sites that you allowed previously continue to function as they did before. The options interface has no controls right now to add websites to them manually. This means that you will have to unblock the block control, get the website in question to trigger a prompt and allow it, to add it to the list of sites allowed to use the function. You would then enable the blocking of all requests again to complete the process. Mozilla could add an option to the permission options to add sites manually there to avoid this from getting too complicated. Closing WordsFirefox users who are annoyed by website notification prompts, or don't want camera, microphone or location prompts, can disable these functions of the browser with just a couple of clicks starting with Firefox 59. (Thanks Sören) Now You: Do you use these functions?
