| Google Assistant Comes to Your Car With New Cigarette Lighter Plugs Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Google Assistant really is almost everywhere at this point – it's in smart mirrors, for example – but Google has not yet fully entered the older car scene on any great scale. That will change some this year, thanks to new products from companies like Anker and JBL, who are bringing Google Assistant-equipped cigarette lighter dongles to market. Both companies announced new in-car Assistant accessories this week at CES. With Anker's Roav Bolt or JBL's Link Drive, you can add Assistant to your non-Android Auto equipped car and get all of the voice commands one could ask for (directions, weather, nearest gas station, etc.). The setup is supposed to be incredibly easy, with quick pairing between your phone and the dongle, once it has been plugged in. Both options also include fast charging to your phone, connect over Bluetooth (or Aux), and feature noise cancelling mics. Now, to be clear, this concept is not at all new. There have been Amazon Alexa cigarette lighter smart accessories available for a couple of years now. I'm not sure how useful they are with no interface, but Google's partners think they'll be in demand enough to give them a push. You can pre-order the Roav Bolt today for $49.99. The JBL Link Drive will arrive this sprint for $59.95. The post Google Assistant Comes to Your Car With New Cigarette Lighter Plugs appeared first on GuaripeteMagazine. | ||||||

Both watches received four main things to note: Waterproofing in the form of 5 ATM resistance, swim monitoring to go along with that water resistance, 30% battery increases, and both are now powered by Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipsets instead of dual-core MediaTek chips. Both devices will be on sale shortly after CES, according to Mobvoi. Specs TicWatch E2 | TicWatch S2 The post Refreshed TicWatch E2 and S2 Feature Bigger Batteries, Snapdragon Wear Chips appeared first on GuaripeteMagazine. | ||||||
| Verizon, With Its Own Non-Standards 5G, Warns Industry to be “Clear and Consistent” With 5G Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Verizon took a minute to stand on a soapbox this morning and warn the wireless industry that they shouldn't over sell 5G. Verizon is worried that some will "over-hype and under-deliver" as temptation slides in for the awesomeness that is the future of 5G. They have called upon the wireless industry to "commit to labeling something 5G only if new device hardware is connecting to the network using new radio technology to deliver new capabilities." They won't "take an old phone and just change the software to turn the 4 in the status bar into a 5" or call their 4G network a 5G network "if customers don't experience a performance or capability upgrade that only 5G can deliver." They went on to say that they are leading by example and that they challenge their competitors to only provide a "clear, consistent and simple understanding of 5G" to consumers, and that with 5G on the horizon, talk of 5G "must be measured in truth and fact, not marketing hype." It's obvious that Verizon is pointing directly at AT&T as they say all of this, even though they never mention them by name. And yes, AT&T deserves to be chastised over their 4G LTE to 5G E flip. But this is all pretty rich coming from Verizon. Remember, Verizon was so focused on being "first" to 5G, that they created their own non-standards based 5G that doesn't work with the standards-based 5G that everyone else will deploy. It's currently only used in their 5G Home service, which again, won't work with the wireless 5G that your phone will connect to at some point down the road. Speaking of their mobile 5G, Verizon is already labeling it "5G Ultra Wideband," only adding to the confusion as if it's something more than 5G. So by creating the "first" 5G product in 5G Home and now preparing to launch 5G Ultra Wideband, they've done nothing but move away from truth and fact, all for marketing hype, leading to a message that is by no means clear or consistent. Great. // Verizon The post Verizon, With Its Own Non-Standards 5G, Warns Industry to be "Clear and Consistent" With 5G appeared first on GuaripeteMagazine. | ||||||
| Improving the alert center with new alerts and controls Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST What's changingWe're making some improvements to the alert center for G Suite. These include:
Who's impactedAdmins only. To use the alert center you need to be a super admin or an alert center delegated admin. Why you'd use itThe alert center provides a single, comprehensive view of essential security-related notifications, alerts, and actions across G Suite. The improvements will help G Suite admins get more insights and manage their alerts:
How to get startedAdditional detailsMore Gmail phishing alerts – We're leveraging machine learning to generate alerts on suspicious incoming mail in Gmail. The new alerts will notify admins when malware or phishing is detected after an email has been delivered to user inboxes. In these events, admins in G Suite Enterprise domains can proactively investigate the emails and if necessary, bulk remove suspicious emails from users' inbox. New data export initiated alert – There's also a new alert when a domain data export is initiated. This alert will let admins know when a data export activity has been initiated for the domain. This alert can help make sure admins are aware of this activity in their domains. See our Help Center for more information on domain data export alerts. Alert deletion option – You can now delete alerts as they have been resolved or are no longer needed. If needed, you can recover deleted alerts within 30 days of deletion. Link to audit logs for G Suite Business and Basic domains – To dig into the details of an alert, G Suite Business and Basic admins can use a link to go directly the specific portion of audit logs and look up more information on past user activities related to this alert. G Suite Enterprise admins have a direct link to the investigation tool, which is part of the security center for G Suite.

| Lenovo’s Smart Clock is an adorably tiny display with Google Assistant Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Amazon unveiled the clock-sized Echo Spot last year, as a smaller alternative to the Echo Show. We haven’t seen any similarly-sized devices running Google’s smart display platform, but Lenovo just unveiled something similar — the Smart Clock. The Smart Clock is a tiny smart display, with a 4-inch IPS screen and a 6W speaker. The unit is wrapped in a Google Home-like gray fabric, and functions as a Google Assistant speaker. Lenovo told 9to5Google that the clock uses a custom software platform based on Android Things, making it the third separate Assistant smart display platform — after the Chromecast-based OS on the Google Home Hub and the Android Things version used by all other third-party displays. Good job, Google. The backside of the clock has a microphone mute switch and a USB Type-A port (for charging your phone). Multiple clock faces are available, and it should go on sale this spring for $79.99. | Google Maps finally gets usable voice commands with Assistant integration Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Today Google is (finally!) announcing its rollout of real Assistant integration into Google Maps, though it was spotted in testing late last year, and announced at I/O. Gone are the days of limited voice controls in navigation. Soon we’ll all be able to harness Google’s full Assistant and all its enhanced functionality — from asking to play music, read/reply to messages, sharing Maps’ ETA, and even add new stops on your way. The change seems to be live on my phone, and I can report that tapping the mic icon in navigation mode brings up an Assistant’s “listening” animation. (Tapping the icon in the normal Maps view still brings up the old TTS dialog, and it remains to be seen if that will change.) Commands asking to add a new stop on an existing route, play music, or send messages seem to work, but asking to share an ETA does not. It’s possible not all of the new features have rolled out just yet. In its announcement for the new feature, Google reminds us that the Assistant works with SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger, Hangouts, Viber, Telegram, Android Messages, and other messaging apps. | Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST The Lenovo Smart Display was our first taste of Assistant’s screen-first experience, but the Home Hub came out more recently with new features. The other smart displays aren’t dead, though. Lenovo is rolling out the “R5” update today that adds some refinements and new features to the display. Lenovo was good enough to include a detailed changelog, so here it is. UPDATED COOKBOOK FEATURE Planning meals just got easier. Cookbook is your virtual cookbook that allows you to find recipes on your smart display and save them for later. Just say, "Hey Google, save this recipe" and your recipe will be added to your Cookbook. When you're ready to get cooking, try saying "Hey Google, show me my Cookbook" and find the recipe in just a few seconds. “show my cookbook” “add to cookbook” “remove from cookbook” "save this recipe" "show me my saved recipes" PHOTO ACTIONS Favorite, Share & Remove Photo MULTIPLE REMOTE CONTROL TILES We now support being able to always show the remote control when accessed via voice or the Home View for another device even if you have a local media session. We will also show up to two mini tiles for remote sessions on the homescreen in addition to a local playback session. DISMISSABLE HOME TILES We now support the ability to dismiss tiles from the home screen. Just swipe them up! Note, some home screen tiles are not dismissible, including: Calendar, Commute, Explore, News, Upcoming Reminder, Music & Video Recommendations. HEAT/COOL THERMOSTAT IMPROVEMENT Heat-cool is one of 5 mode options on the Nest Thermostat (heat, cool, eco, off, and heat-cool) that "will create a schedule that will switch automatically between heating and cooling on the Nest thermostat to keep your home within a preferred temperature range." The mode is particularly helpful during the shoulder seasons in regions that have cold nights and hot days. "Turn on heat/cool mode." "Set heat/cool mode to 68 and 72 degrees." "Set the [thermostat name] between 68 to 72." "Turn off the [thermostat name]." INDIVIDUAL LIGHT CONTROL (within a group) When the user is shown a group light controller (e.g. Living room lights) they'll be able to control the brightness and on/off state for each light within that group. So, a lot of the changes are related to smart home gadgets that you may or may not have. Everyone can enjoy the dismissable home tiles, though. That’s much appreciated. This particular update is intended for the US, CA, and UK markets, which are the only places the display is officially available. In addition, it won’t hit all device instantly. Lenovo will deploy it over the course of a week to ensure there are no show-stopping bugs. A Lenovo representative announced on the company’s forums that the rollout has temporarily stopped:
First it was underway, then Lenovo hit pause, and once again not only is distribution of the Smart Display R5 update happening, but it has nearly come to an end. According to Lenovo, the rollout is set to finally hit all devices by the end of the week, so if you don’t have it yet, odds are pretty darn strong that you’ll be seeing it land in the days to come. | 7 Best Games Available on the Snap Store Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST In this post we list the best Ubuntu games that are available to install as Snap apps, for free, from the official Snapcraft store. No PPAs, no shady repos, and no tar.gz bundles to grapple with. Just 7 standout games packaged in the sandboxed Snap app format. Sadly the latest AAA blockbuster Linux game releases that get headlines don't (currently) distribute themselves through the Snap store. But there are plenty of other titles that do. Finally, though our list focuses on Ubuntu as the host platform all of the games listed are available to install on any Linux distribution that supports Snap technology. The Best Ubuntu Game Snaps1. Live for Speed
A serious racing simulator with a steep learning curve. Many say the experience of racing in Live for Speed is the nearest thing to sitting in the actual drivers seat of an actual car in an actual race! Released for Windows, though playable on Linux thanks to Wine, which is what the Snap here uses, Live for Speed features a realistic physics engine, great visuals, and even a degree of online gameplay. The game is best played with a steering wheel controller, though you can use a keyboard and/or mouse. Although this game is free to download you will need to buy a Live for Speed license if you wish to unlock additional vehicles and tracks. sudo snap install wine-platform sudo snap install liveforspeed 2. TrackMania: Nations ForeverConsidered one of the most popular online PC racing games of all time, TrackMania: Nations Forever is now readily available on the Snap store. TrackMania: Nations Forever is another Wine-based game neatly packaged as a Snap app, but don't let that put you off: both graphics and gameplay are on point. For unadulterated arcade racing action with a variety of racing environments, cars, tracks and even online players to compete against, TrackMania: Nations Forever is the kind of game you'll go all-in on. sudo snap install tmnationsforever 3. Warzone 2100
If racing isn't for you, but galactic conquest is, snap install open-source real-time strategy game Warzone 2100. In Warzone 2100 you take charge of The Project, a force battling to rebuild the world after a devastating nuclear fallout. With campaign, multiplayer and single-player skirmish modes, a diverse array of technology available, and some seriously strategic thinking needed, Warzone 2100 is a game you'll keep coming back to. sudo snap install warzone2100 4. Oh My Giraffe!
For a game that's a little less demanding on the ol' reflexes, the cute, fast-paced, giraffe-packed challenge of Oh My Giraffe! will suit. The game has a simple premise: you're a giraffe, you like to eat fruit, but you need to outrun some sleepy lions. A perfect way to fill five minutes of time as you wait for something to render, download or install. Simple to play, slightly addictive, and something kids will surely dig. sudo snap install ohmygiraffe 5. SuperTuxKartIf you use Linux there's a good chance you've at least heard of SuperTuxKart if you haven't already played it. Arguably the best kart racing game outside of consoles (where Mario Kart and the Crash Team Racing series rules supreme). And the best bit is that it's absolutely free! Great graphics, masterful gameplay, diverse set of tracks, and a canny collection of characters and karts to choose from make SuperTuxKart a game no-one should miss out on enjoying: snap install supertuxkart 6. Xonotic
Fast-paced first-person shooter Xonotic is a classic within the free software community. It has easy-to-master gameplay, tonnes of weapons to choose from, and a diverse set of game modes — including online play — to help keep things interesting. A genuinely standout open-source classic. For fans of FPS games in particular, it's totally worth braving annihilation in the arena for… snap install xonotic 7. Minecraft InstallerOkay, so this Snap isn't technically a game at all: it's a downloader for a game. But it's a game that needs no introduction, Minecraft. The Snap is possibly the fastest, fuss-free way to get Minecraft and its densely inhabited sandbox up and running on Ubuntu. Mc-installer is a fork of the Minecraft-NSG installer Snap, only it doesn't use the Oracle version of Java and instead rolls with the freely available OpenJDK. Once installed, just launch mc-installer to trigger a download the Minecraft .jar files. The installer then lets you play it on your Ubuntu (or other Snapd-supporting distro) — go build, dig and chase sheep! sudo snap install mc-installer Honourable mentionsOther games on the Snap store that are definitely worth checking out when you've got some down time include historical strategy game 0.A.D., 3D FPS Urban Terror, C&C: Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge, and 2D space shooter M.A.R.S.. Naturally a list of the 'best' anything is going to be subjective to a degree. So if not all of you reading this agree with my choices I'll understand. That said, you're free to use the comments section below to share your personal top Linux game picks — the only requirement is that they must be available on the Snap store!
