| How to move your Health data to a new iPhone or Apple Watch Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:05 PM PST When you move to a new Apple Watch or new iPhone, one thing you need to keep an eye on is your health data. Because it’s a very private set of information, it’s available as an optional set of data to sync to iCloud in iOS 11, as well as via encrypted iCloud and iTunes backups. If you want to move to a new device, however, you’ll need to decide how to bring that information over. Option 1: Back up your health data with an encrypted iCloud or iTunes backupWhile the Apple Watch doesn’t make a backup in the “true” sense of the word, it does sync Health data to your iPhone’s health repository, along with saving watch faces and the like as a package inside of your iPhone backup. To recover your health data, you’ll need to make a backup of your Health repository — and that means making an iPhone backup. You create encrypted iCloud backups whenever you back up to iCloud with your iPhone, but encrypted iTunes backups are a bit of a different beast. Here’s how to do them.
Option 2: Sync with iCloudAs of iOS 11, Apple offers encrypted syncing of your Health data to iCloud, just as it stores your notes, keychain, and other information. Before you decide to go down this route, however, you’ll need to make sure both your iPhone and your Apple Watch are updated to iOS 11. How to sync your Health data with iCloud Once enabled, iCloud will sync your health data; if you decide to set up a new iPhone before setting up a new Apple Watch, you should be able to sync that over to your Apple Watch with no problem. Option 3: Use Health Data Importer to move health data to a new iPhoneIf you want, you can export your data directly from the Health app via the Health Data Importer app. You can get Health Data Importer on the App Store for $3.99; it’s a great app if you need it, though the other two methods listed above are more reliable (especially if you have a large array of Health data).
What now?Once you’ve set up a plan for restoring your health data on a new iPhone or Apple Watch, you can start the upgrade process. Be sure to follow our guides to restoring your Apple Watch or iPhone from backup, as well as how to sync your Health data. | Battle with Bowser in Monopoly Gamer: Collector’s Edition at almost 50% off Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:05 PM PST Monopoly Gamer: Collector’s Edition is down to just $17.49 at Amazon. This board game sells for around $33 on average there and has never dropped this low in price before until now. This game was designed for Nintendo fans. It’s not about just earning the most money; Gamer has much different gameplay than regular Monopoly does. It features five fan-favorite characters that you can choose to play with, including Mario, Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong and Yoshi. There are also boss fights and tons of Nintendo references throughout the game. The standard version of Monopoly Gamer is currently selling for around $16 at Amazon, but it’s missing a few things that the Collector’s Edition has, like the Bowser character piece and its cool-looking box. | Chromecast Audio Still $15 Because It’s Been Discontinued Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Over Black Friday weekend, Google dropped the price of the Chromecast Audio to $15, while noting that the price drop would be good through the end of February. That long of a massive price drop seemed odd and would typically only be a move a company would make if the product was being discontinued. As it turns out, the Chromecast Audio has indeed been discontinued. A post over at reddit first brought up the idea that it was discontinued, but the crew at Android Police has now confirmed it with Google. The $15 price is still available, though, assuming you can find it in stock anywhere. That price drop has helped it sellout at most retailers. Not sure why you would want Chromecast Audio? It's a product that adds Google Cast abilities to dumb speakers. I can't imagine that the world was ever flocking to buy these, but they did serve a purpose for those with older speakers needing to be modernized. I've used a Chromecast Audio since it launched with a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers. I love Chromecast Audio. If you have older speakers lying around your house that you have been hoping to bring life back to, now is your final chance. Google Assistant dominated too, so we'll talk about a bunch of related product announcements there. We'll also dive into other big news from the week, like new headphones, the first BFGD, AT&T's fake 5G rollout, and the end of the Nexus 6P and 5X. No trivia this week. | DEAL: Samsung Galaxy Note 9, S9, S9+ All $200 Off With Up to $300 Off in Trades Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST Samsung has decent deals this weekend for its current flagship phones, the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9+. If you buy any of those phones from the Samsung store and choose Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint models, you'll get $200 off. In addition to the price drop, Samsung is offering $300 off instantly for trade-ins. Any catch? Of course. You have to buy the phones with device payment plans in order to get the $200 off. That's not surprising, of course, because the industry has switched to this model for a good couple of years now. This is how we really feel about them. To get the instant trade discount of up to $300, you'll need to trade-in a specific set of phones. Some examples of $300 off phones are the Note 8, S9, S9+, and iPhone X and 8 Plus. Other phones will get you a solid $250 off, like the Pixel 2 XL, S8+, iPhone 8 or iPhone 7 Plus. And again, that discount comes off today, you just have to send your phone in later. The Galaxy S10 is coming, but that doesn't mean these 2018 flagships from Samsung aren't still great buys. | [Update: More and more countries] Google One’s storage plans start rolling out in the UK and Canada Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST After tentatively launching in the US in May, Google One, aka Google’s new unified storage plans and service, has been shyly expanding. It didn’t become available to “everyone” in the US until August, and even then, there were plenty of exceptions that meant not all users were able to migrate to the new plans. After that, it was announced for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico as well as India. Now, users in two more countries are getting emails notifying them of an upgrade to Google One. In the UK, the pricing for the different plans is:
The 1TB plan, which previously cost £9.99 monthly, has been replaced by the new 2TB one, so you’ll be getting double the storage at the same price. There are also more choices, family sharing, online support, and various other perks to being a Google One subscriber. We don’t have any pricing details for Canada, but they should be inline with what we’ve seen in the US. Looks like the Google One love is already spreading, and now we get word that the service is now available to users in additional nations across Europe, including Spain, France, and Russia. In France, at least, pricing comes in at:
The rollout of Google One has been hitting more and more countries over the past few weeks. We’ve had reports from users in New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, Czech Republic, Chile, and more who have received their upgrade emails. If you want to check whether the new storage plans are available in your country, head over to one.google.com. Thanks, Matej, Maximiliano, Liviu, Petr, Fabian. | The best products of CES 2019 – our favorite things at the world’s biggest tech show Posted: 11 Jan 2019 12:04 PM PST CES 2019 is (nearly) a wrap, and we've picked our ten favorite products from this year's show. They really do span the gamut: laptops, smartphones, smart home, automotive, and general gadgetry, reflecting the increasing number of ways just about everything in our lives has become connected in one way or another. Without further ado, here are our Best of CES 2019 winners. Brought to you by Jackery portable power stationsGetting green, sustainable power when you're off the grid should be a simple affair – but it's often a lot easier said than done. That's why we've partnered with Jackery on our Best of CES 2019 awards to showcase their new Honda by Jackery and Jackery Explorer Series portable power stations. Jackery portable power stations offer up to 1500Wh of portable AC and DC power, and to get you truly off the grid, they can be recharged by solar energy alone using Jackery's optional solar panels – that’s innovation. Jackery has also partnered with Honda to launch an entirely new line of Honda by Jackery portable power stations, with the same sustainable, eco-friendly approach and amazing value. The Honda by Jackery line offers all the same great features found in the Explorer Series and will be available soon in 200Wh and 292Wh configurations. Jackery is our official ‘Best Of CES’ partner, and the above content is sponsored. Now, back to our regular programming. HP Chromebook 14HP's first AMD Chromebook presents a far better value than similarly-priced Intel Chromebooks, with much more powerful 15W processors and more capable GPUs. It's positioned in the MSRP sweet spot for Chromebooks, and having tried it out, I think this will be a compelling buy for students and home users alike. It offers USB-C charging – on both side of the laptop – and a rugged, textured hard plastic design that won't show scratches or fingerprints. A 1080p touchscreen model will be closer to $300, but the basic 768p model is priced at $270. We think it's going to be one of the standout budget Chrome devices this year. Acer Chromebook 315If the HP Chromebook 14 has the market cornered for an entry-level Chromebook in 2018, Acer's Chromebook 315 has that same charm in an even bigger package. With its massive 15.6" display, this is one of the largest Chromebooks on the market, but it will cost just $280 when it debuts later this year. It's using the same AMD A4/A6 series mobile processors as the HP above, meaning performance should be nearly identical, and it will be offered with up to 8GB of RAM and with touch and non-touch 1080p displays. For the person wanting a large-format, no frills laptop at an affordable price point, the Chromebook 315 is an easy pick. Arlo Ultra 4KArlo makes some of our favorite home security cameras, both for their quality and user-friendly features like local video backup. The Ultra 4K really ups the game, though, offering 4K capture and monitoring atop a new and improved version of Arlo's mounting package that can position the camera at a staggering number of angles – even more than the current products. Did we mention it's also completely wireless? Arlo says the battery on the Ultra 4K should last three or four months, just like the current Pro line, and despite the video quality bump, there's no change to the cloud backup pricing (one year of premium is included with the Ultra). It's pricey, at $300 for the camera alone (no bridge), but nobody's making battery-powered cameras as smart and capable as Arlo's – let alone with 4K live streaming. Arlo Security SystemArlo announced its own home security suite at CES this week, and it really does look good. It works with your existing Arlo Base Station, and is comprised of three products: a sensor, a siren, and a remote. The sensor can detect temperature or moisture, hear smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, and be used as a traditional door or window sensor. That's a huge amount of functionality in one little dongle. The siren is pretty smart, too, with neat tricks like being able to play the sound of a dog barking or a TV show in the background in order to dissuade would-be intruders when they're detected. It can also, of course, scream really loudly and flash a bright led strobe light. There's a remote to top it all off, and combined with Arlo's security cameras, this could be the smart home security system to buy in 2019. We'll have to wait for pricing to be announced, but we're already excited by what we see here. JBL Link DriveJBL's Link Drive will bring Google Assistant to your non-smart vehicle later this spring using just a cigarette lighter and Bluetooth (or an auxiliary cable, if your car lacks BT). The dongle supports hotword activation for a true hands-free experience, and you'll be able to start navigation or queue up some tunes without fiddling with your phone. At just $60, we think these are going to sell exceptionally well, and should make for a greatly improved in-car Assistant experience. ASUS Chromebook Flip C434ASUS may have the premium ultraportable Chromebook to beat in 2018 with the new Flip C434. It offers 8GB of RAM (for US SKUs), a Y-series Intel Core i5 processor, and a good-looking 1080p IPS display with extremely tiny bezels. It has a solid keyboard according to our resident key snob Ryan Whitwam, and a full aluminum body makes the C434 feel exceptionally well-built. Like all the Flip models before it, the C434 is fully convertible, too, which makes it a great device for watching video. ASUS says it's planning to launch the C434 in spring for just $550 in the US, which is an extremely good price for what I would definitely call a true "premium" Chromebook. Nubia Red Magic MarsZTE offshoot Nubia is launching its gaming smartphone, the Red Magic Mars, in the US next month. It packs a Snapdragon 845, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, and a 3800mAh battery – already making it sound pretty appealing on paper. Oh, and it costs $400. We can barely believe it ourselves. Once I saw that price, pretty much any other concerns I had about this Nubia phone went straight out the window. That's an insane amount of performance for the money, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any phone in the world offering these kinds of specs for that kind of price. It definitely has that OnePlus One feeling all over again, and yes: it ships with Android 9. Anker PowerPort Atom PD1Anker's new Atom PD1 30W USB-C wall charger is impressive for one reason and one reason only: it's tiny. At just the size of a standard iPhone wall wart, it's smaller than most Android phone chargers that top out at just half its maximum power output. Provided it has USB-PD support, you could charge a fanless laptop pretty quickly with this tiny little brick and just stop carrying any other charger. I'm buying three – they're going to be $30 apiece, and I imagine they'll be worth every penny. Lenovo Smart ClockIf we had a Most Adorable Gadget award, Lenovo's new Google Assistant Smart Clock would win, hands down. Its tiny 4-inch display makes it look pint-sized even next to the already small Google Home Hub, and I think people are going to love having these on their bedside tables. $80 does seem a bit steep, but this is the first product of its kind in the Google ecosystem, and I bet a lot of people are willing to pay for what is essentially a Google Home Mini that also has a clock and some basic smart display functionality (like video doorbell monitoring). Jabra Elite 85hJabra is entering the noise-cancelling headphone fray this year with its new 85h over-ears, and I'm downright impressed with what they've achieved here. The 85h are extremely stylish, feel very comfortable, and based on my initial impressions, offer extremely respectable noise cancellation. They'll be $300 when they arrive later this year, and they have Google Assistant built-in with hotword activation, the latter being a feature products from the likes of Sony and Bose lack. Jabra's true wireless earbuds quickly became my favorites last year, and I have a sneaking suspicion they could upend the ANC market as well – the 85h have clever engineering in the headband to reduce discomfort, and the noise cancellation can operate using only the in-ear cup microphones when they're blocked or noises like wind are detected, reducing interference. I'm really looking forward to these. Special thanks to Hyundai and the all-new Veloster NGetting around Vegas during CES can be a real bear, so I always prefer to have our own form of official AP transportation at the show. This year, we were lucky enough to work with Hyundai, who provided us the all-new Veloster N – and boy, is this thing a riot. With a 275HP turbocharged engine and Nurburgring-tuned suspension, this isn't your grandma's hatchback. I've never had so much fun zipping between casinos and convention centers, and if you're in the market for a sporty compact car, I can't recommend this thing enough. It's a blast.
