| watchOS 5 launches on September 17! Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT The Apple Watch is getting a big upgrade with the newest version of its operating system, watchOS 5. With completely new features added to the Apple Watch for the first time and some changes to some old familiar feature; here’s a breakdown of everything that’s new coming in watchOS 5. New announcements for watchOS 5Apple’s Gather Round event didn’t release much more information, but we did get an official release date! watchOS 5 launches on September 17! CompetitionsThe Activity app is getting a new feature called “Competition,” which will allow you to challenge any friend to a 7-day competition for closing those rings! You can even check on the progress throughout the challenge and earn awards! During a competition, the personalized coaching will give you feedback and alerts let you know if you’re ahead or falling behind your competitor, so you’ll always know what you need to do to best them! Automatic workout detectionApple announced a few new features for the Workout app, the most exciting of which is automatic workout detection. watchOS 5 will be able to detect when you start to workout, and if you haven’t selected a workout, it will suggest that you start one. It will also give you retroactive credit from when your Apple Watch detected the workout so that you won’t miss any important metrics. The app will even remind you to end your workout, too. New workouts in Workout appwatchOS 5 will give you the ability to track two new workouts; yoga and hiking! Yoga will primarily be focused on your heart rate, whereas, hiking will give you awesome metrics like calories burned and elevation in real time. Pace alertsLots of people already use their Apple Watch as a running companion and Pace alerts will allow users to get even more out of their runs. Pace alerts will allow you to choose a target pace for your run, and with a simple tap of the Apple Watch, it will let you know how you’re keeping up. It will even track Rolling miles, which will allow you to see your time for the previous mile and the mile you’re currently running. Walkie-TalkieWith watchOS 5, your Apple Watch will be able to work like a walkie-talkie with the new app, aptly named, Walkie-Talkie. If both you and your friend have watchOS 5, you’ll be able to send small sound bites back and forth just by pressing a Talk button your the screen of your Apple Watch. Walkie-Talkie will work over a Data or Wi-Fi signal. Read: FAQ: Walkie Talkie in watchOS5 PodcastsThe Podcasts app finally makes it over to watchOS 5, and you’ll be able to listen to your favorite podcasts right on your wrist. Of course, you can also pick up right where you left off on your latest podcast if you choose to leave your office, so you never miss a beat! NotificationsMuch like iOS 12, notifications are getting an upgrade with watchOS 5. Notifications will now be grouped, so instead of having one notification per text message from your mom, you’ll have one notification group you can tap on to read through all of them individually, or even clear all the notifications away at once. Plus, watchOS 5 now has WebKit, meaning you’ll be able to open web links right on the wrist without having to pull out your phone. You can even schedule Do Not Disturb mode on your Apple Watch. Either set it for an amount of time or even tell it to turn notifications back on when you leave your current location. SiriJust like iOS 12, watchOS 5 introduces Siri Shortcuts, which lets all types of apps add shortcuts to Siri, letting you add custom phrases that correspond to a specific app to perform tasks. On top of that, Siri suggestions will now be more robust, learning your app usage habits to be more helpful, offering suggestions on the Siri watch face. Siri will also be even easier to invoke on the Apple Watch, with Raise to speak. No more saying “Hey, Siri”, instead just raise your Apple Watch up and tell Siri what to do, including using the new Shortcuts to order your morning coffee! Student ID cardsApple wants to help college students on campuses are the U.S. by allowing students to stroe their Student ID cards on their Apple Watch. This should allow students to pay for laundry, open dorm rooms and other facilities, even pay for food around campus with the NFC chip. As of right now, only six post-secondary instiutions have partnered with Apple:
Which models of Apple Watch will support watchOS 5Although not officially said on stage at the WWDC Keynote, the Apple website clearly states that only the Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2, and Apple Watch Series 3 will be compatible with watchOS 5. Plus, you’ll need an iPhone 5s or later that runs iOS 12. Release dateThe first developer beta for watchOS 5 is available right now, with the official public released schedule for sometime in the fall of 2018. | iPhone XR: Everything you need to know! Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT Apple has just announced the iPhone XR, which offers much of the same user experience of the iPhone X, but with some notable departures. The phone is larger than the iPhone X, with a 6.1-inch LCD display. It retains the TrueDepth camera that first launched on the 2017 iPhone X, and says goodbye to the Home button. Here’s what you need to know about the iPhone XR. What is the iPhone XR?The iPhone XR is one of Apple’s new iPhones for late 2018 and into 2019. While the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are certainly the flagship products, the iPhone XR offers a similar user experience with some scaled-down specs. The iPhone XR uses the same processor as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, as well as Face ID and the TrueDepth camera, but uses different display technology and a single rear camera. Its sides are also made out of aluminum, rather than stainless steel. When will the iPhone XR be available? The iPhone XR goes up for pre-order on Friday, September 14. Deliveries and in-store availability will begin on October 19, and in stores on October 26. What colors will it come in?Apple has some new color options for its mainstream iPhone. While past models have been available in up to three colors, this year, Apple is offering the iPhone XR in six: Black, White, Product(Red), Yellow, Coral, and Blue. What storage capacities will the iPhone XR come in?The iPhone XR will have three storage options: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. What will the iPhone XR cost?iPhone XR pricing breaks down like so:
Will the iPhone XR run iOS 12?Indeed it will. iOS 12 will launch to the public before the iPhone XR reaches customers, so there might even be a small update ready by the time you get yours. So is there no Home button on the iPhone XR?The iPhone XR has ditched the Home button and Touch ID in favor of Face ID and the TrueDepth camera. Does the iPhone XR have a new display?Yes and no. It’s still an LCD panel, unlike the iPhone XS, which uses and OLED screen. LCD is still the standard display technology in the mainstream iPhone lineup. But for the first time, Apple has made an LCD display that covers the entire front of the device, and Apple calls it the Liquid Retina display. That means saying goodbye to the iPhone’s “chin and forehead” look that had become associated with it. It’s also the second-largest iPhone that Apple has produced by screen size. Sitting in between the iPhone XS (5.8 inches) and iPhone XS Max (6.5 inches), the iPhone XR features a 6.1-inch display, with a resolution of NumberxNumber. So there’s no more Home button?Apple has ditched the Home button in favor of Face ID. And just like on the iPhone X last year, you’ll now swipe up from the bottom of the display in order to return to your Home screen. Is there anything new with Face ID or the TrueDepth camera? The iPhone XR uses the same TrueDepth camera as the iPhone XS. What should I know about the new A12 Bionic processor? The A12 Bionic is Apple’s latest and greatest in-house system-on-a-chip (SoC). Like its predecessor, it uses a combination of multiple high-energy processing cores for more intensive tasks, as well as multiple high-efficiency cores for light work like checking email and browsing the web. It’s a six-core CPU, and uses a new, eight-core Neural Engine to power the machine learning systems on the iPhone XR that can process up to five trillion (yep) operations per second. The processor allows for more powerful graphics performance, better photo processing, and real-time machine learning. What’s new with the camera? If you were hoping the dual-camera system on the iPhone X would make its way over the the iPhone XR, I’ve got some bad news: the iPhone XR only uses a single rear camera like the iPhone 8. That being said, it still shoots up to 4K at 60 frames per second and is optically stabilized. The camera also benefits from the new power of the A12 Bionic processor, improved sensors, and improved image signal processor. The camera is able to capture even more detail, despite keeping the 12 megapixels that have been present in the iPhone cameras for years now. It features Smart HDR, which automatically makes improvements to photos using machine learning. The iPhone XR is also able to take Portrait Mode photos, despite the fact that it has only a single camera. Does it still have wireless charging? The iPhone XR does indeed support wireless charging. | Best online multiplayer games for Nintendo Switch Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT
The Nintendo Switch has been out for about a year and a half now and in that time, we’ve seen some seriously fantastic games released. Unfortunately, the Switch has been a little light when it comes to games supporting online multiplayer. Hopefully, we’ll see a lot more games which will fit the bill come out in the following year. Until then, here are some of the best games with online multiplayer available right now. FortniteAs the king of the battle royale style game, Fornite has an incredibly robust player-base. This means that you’ll never be waiting for people to play with. You can also play with any of your friends on just about any other platform — unless of course, your friends are playing on PS4. If you want to get into some heated battle royale action, Fortnite is going to be your go-to on the Nintendo Switch. The best part? Fortnite is free to play! Splatoon 2When it comes to getting a game going with friends, one of the very best options would have to be Splatoon 2. You can get together with three other friends and take on another team of four in a turf war (a turf war is a splatter battle to cover everything you can with ink). The team with the most surface area coated in their color is the winner. You can get a copy for $53. Super Mario Kart 8Mario Kart is a multiplayer stalwart. The only difference is that rather than turning on the couch and yelling at your friend who just banana peeled you, you can yell at them through your headset. Mario Kart is a killer game all on its own. It also happens to have great multiplayer and a robust community of players. If racing is your bag, it’s well worth the $55. Rocket LeagueHow about combining racing and soccer? Rocket League does just that and does it quite well. If you want some frenetic over the top gameplay, then Rocket League is probably for you. In addition, it’s cross-platform so there is always a bunch of people to play with. You can pick up a copy at Amazon for the low, low price of $30. MinecraftIt was only a matter of time before the Minecraft made its way to the Switch. Just about the only platform Minecraft isn’t on is the Etch-a-Sketch. You and your friends can dive deep below the earth to mine precious resources or stay up top to build the fortress of your dreams. Just like Rocket League, Minecraft is cross-platform so there is a massive community of people to play with if you choose. It also has one of the easiest methods for your friends to join your game online. You can pick up your very own copy for $30. DoomIf you’re looking for a game that is a little more aggressive and blood-soaked, then you might want to pick up a copy of Doom for your Nintendo Switch. Doom is all about big guns and bigger monsters. The multiplayer is fast-paced and full of thrills and chills. It has a classic multiplayer feel that will bring you back to the days of games like Unreal Tournament or Halo. If you’re ready for Doom multiplayer, then it can be had for $52. There is nothing quite like jumping online and playing a game with your friends. Nintendo is aware and seems to be making an effort to bring games to the Switch which will do just that. I am totally looking forward to seeing what other multiplayer experienced the Switch has in store for us. Do you have some favorite online multiplayer games? Or are you looking forward to a different multiplayer experience? let us know in the comments. Updated September 2018: Added Fornite for some battle royale action! | These Keyboard Apps Make Typing More Fun Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT ![]() It has everything you could ask a keyboard to do, plus a bit extraWhen you first download Google’s Gboard, you might not realize how much you’re getting. Sure, you have to go through all the setup steps of allowing it full system access and then adding it to your keyboard lists. Still, you might not know how much is packed into the keyboard, and how solidly Google is supporting it. The search engine giant keeps coming up with new features to add to the keyboard. Right off the bat, we got glide-based typing, but that was only the beginning. Voice dictation came later, and a new update has added even more functionality. Why we love itIf words simply won’t do, you don’t like any of the emojis available, and nothing else seems to fit, just draw your own picture. The latest update to Gboard lets you do that. All you have to do is tap the Emoji icon, then find the marker at the bottom of the screen. Just like that, you’ll be able to doodle your own picture to send to your contact. You can choose from nine different colors of markers, and can even adjust the width of the line you draw. The doodling feature even supports undo, so you can express yourself artistically with confidence in being able to erase a mistake quickly and easily. Google might not have come up with the idea of handwritten drawings on iOS, especially in messages. However, the way it works is far superior to what you can do with Digital Touch if you want to actually draw something and know what it’s going to look like. | Google is Killing Inbox, the Best Email App Ever, and I’m Mad Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT ![]() Google is killing its best email app. Inbox, which Google created to do fun stuff with as Gmail sat in the dark ages never doing anything fun, has been given an end-of-life date. Inbox users, who are smarter than Gmail users, will have to switch off it by March 2019. I'm mad. Sure, Gmail has stolen all of Inbox's best features in recent months and probably makes it an easy choice for the chopping block, but whatever. I'm still mad. I don't like the color red either. Red email apps suck. Blue is cooler and superior. Trip bundles are cooler too. I don't even know if Gmail has those or not, but if it does, they work better on Inbox. Swiping too. All of your stolen Gmail features are better on Inbox because. March 2019, folks. I'll be here being mad. | Samsung and Google are RCS Besties Now Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT ![]() RCS will be cool in like 5 years when we have more than 1.5 carriers and some phones that can utilize it. Messages will be filled with typing indicators and higher-res images and all the group sh*t you could ever get into, in a group message. Trust me, we've only been telling you this for a cool 2+ years. I promise, though, some day. Some day. And when that day comes, your Samsung phone will likely be in on it and the RCS-powered messages you send from the Samsung Messages app will work nicely with Google's Android Messages app. The two announced as much today. Well, they told us that they are great partners or something and that one day their apps will play nice together, assuming your Samsung phone is on a carrier who supports RCS (which again, is like 1.5 today). Samsung says that they'll make RCS work between Samsung Messages and Android Messages starting with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, two phones that will soon be 2 years old. Their verbiage is slightly unclear on one thing there, which is whether or not that RCS support depends on having Android 9.0 Pie or not. Samsung's RCS-related note today says to expect support between its messenger and Google's on the Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, S9, S9+, Note 8, and Note 9, as well as select A and J series phones. At the tail end of their list of devices, they said "running Android 9.0 or later." The way it's written suggest that all of those phones I just mentioned will need Android 9.0 Pie in order to work between Google's messaging app and their own, or that could also mean that its the A and J series phones that need Pie and the others are cool on Oreo. For your sake, I hope we aren't all waiting on Pie updates. I don't know. RCS needs to get here for most of us to care and it's still not. // Samsung The post Samsung and Google are RCS Besties Now appeared first on GuaripeteMagazine. |
| RIP Inbox: Google says its experimental mail client will be killed in March 2019 Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT Google’s Inbox may be on life support, according to a report by Fast Company. Allegedly the popular bundled email client service, which includes a desktop site and Android app, is set to be discontinued early next year. The official announcement of Inbox’s scheduled euthanasia is expected to land later today. Now we know who won this fight. Many of us here at Android Police are big fans of Inbox and its time-saving features, like bundling and pinned items, but with Google’s refreshed interest in Gmail, it’s not that surprising that the company’s attention and resources have been refocused. Inbox has languished in recent times, losing more features than it has gained in the last year — like Save to Inbox and some snooze options — but we didn’t think its end was quite so near. A Google representative told Computerworld earlier this year, before the changes to Gmail were revealed, “with respect to the upcoming Gmail announcement, there are no changes to Inbox by Gmail,” and that “it remains a great product for users with specific workflows and one in which we test innovative features for email.” If Fast Company’s report is correct, Google’s plans have changed since then.
