| 7 classic games I hope come to Nintendo Switch Online Posted: 18 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT
Nintendo Switch Online launches in September, and with it, subscribers have been promised access to a library of 20 classic NES games at launch on their Nintendo Switch, with more on the way. This comes as a part of Nintendo’s gradual move away from the Virtual Console label, alongside other classic gaming offerings such as the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition. So far, Nintendo remains steadfast with its small scope for the service, though Nintendo dreamers like me hope one day for more modern titles, too. Though 20 titles will be available at launch, we only know about ten of them so far, and more will be added down the road. With Nintendo keeping them under wraps for now, here are seven classic games I’d love to see as a part of Nintendo Switch Online either at launch or later on after release: NES Open Tournament Golf (Mario Open Golf)
The original Mario Golf game was published on the NES and came to the United States as NES Open Tournament Golf. It was the second golf game on the NES, though notably the original Golf hasn’t been announced alongside its brethren Soccer and Tennis for Nintendo Switch Online. My recommendation is to skip the basic Golf and go all-in on NES Open Tournament Golf instead. Or, rather, go for a localization of Mario Open Golf, which was the same game in Japan but with more courses and more difficult holes. Revisiting Mario Open Golf is a great opportunity to examine the roots of the excellent Mario Golf games in a convenient, portable format. It’s also a shoe-in for that online multiplayer that Nintendo’s been touting. Doki Doki Panic
Fun fact time: Doki Doki Panic was only ever released in Japan. The game takes place in an Arabian fantasy setting and features a family as the main protagonists. The game did eventually see a North American release, but with a different look–it came out as Super Mario Bros. 2, and featured Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad! In most respects, it’s the same game, though settings, characters, visuals, sounds, and some technical aspects shifted. For example, in the original Doki Doki Panic, the player was required to beat a level with all four main protagonists, instead of any character they liked. The original Doki Doki Panic never made it west, and while no one’s clamoring for a localization the way they clamor for, say, Mother 3 (more on that later), there’s something interesting about seeing original titles show up where they weren’t intended to. Just take a look at Star Fox 2! Doki Doki Panic would be a fun curiosity of a release and a great chance for North American players to see the roots of a classic Mario game. Marble Madness
Though it began as an arcade game, I poured hours into Marble Madness after school on the NES as a child. It’s notoriously difficult, as the player must navigate a slippy marble down an obstacle course fraught with obstacles, all within a time limit. The best speedrunners can knock this game out of the park, but for amateurs like the rest of us, Marble Madness is a true test of patience and very rewarding for those who are successful. Okay, maybe I just want to be able to smash some marbles up on my Nintendo Switch, but with its short rounds of play (and, dare I suggest, potential for motion control integration?), Marble Madness could be a delight as a part of Nintendo Switch Online. Milon’s Secret Castle
Milon’s Secret Castle was a lesser-known platformer on the NES that had many of the trappings of Mario. Even its star character, Milon, who was trying to rescue a princess trapped in an enormous, multi-roomed castle, looked a bit like Mario. He could break bricks and shoot bubbles (not fireballs), and his primary skill was jumping. That said, Milon’s Secret Castle was notable for its obscurity and difficulty, unlike Mario, who just had to run to the right. The levels on each floor of Milon’s castle could be entered in any order, and the goal was often to acquire enough money to buy a certain item that would allow you to progress, or to find a hidden item in a stage. Worst (or best) of all, the blocks in Milon’s Secret Castle often had no indication of whether they were breakable or not. You just had to spam bubbles and hope for the best, or memorize the level layout. Though challenging, Milon’s Secret Castle was a wonderful variant on the Mario formula that doesn’t deserve to be lost to the ages. Perhaps Nintendo sees it in competition with their plumber mascot, but I offer that Milon would make an excellent friend alongside the many Mario titles already being offered. Harvest Moon
Hey, no one said we had to stick to NES games, right? For now, Nintendo seems inclined to stick to its older system, but with the SNES Classic Edition also on everyone’s minds, I think it’s fair to posit SNES titles may have a chance. The SNES Classic Edition is already loaded with the majority of the console’s greatest hits, but there are two notable games missing from the line-up that would be perfect for Nintendo Switch Online. The first is the original Harvest Moon, the farming sim that started it all. Though obviously a far simpler experience than modern Harvest Moon games, the recent hit that was Stardew Valley revived the audience for such games by, in many ways, returning to the genre’s roots. The original Harvest Moon’s serene, yet challenging simulation would be a perfect way to ensure I never put my Nintendo Switch down again. Chrono Trigger
Since we’re talking about the SNES Classic, I can’t get out of here without mentioning the console’s most glaring omission: Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger’s updated release on the Nintendo DS has thus far been the best way to play one of the best RPGs of all time, but as the DS goes out of fashion, I keep looking for a convenient way to revisit it. What better way than on my Nintendo Switch? Later incarnations of Chrono Trigger, especially the recent PC port, have been questionable in quality, but they’ve also included bonus content not available in the original. A straight port of Chrono Trigger with its original integrity intact but including the additional dungeons would be a welcome addition to Nintendo Online Services. Chrono Trigger is one of the few games that has held up to its hype almost completely even years after its initial release. Allowing it a spotlight on the Switch would be a perfect way to introduce its time traveling, magical adventure to a new generation of fans. Mother, Mother 2, Mother 3
Localize Mother 3, the sign says, and we all clamor agreement. At least for Nintendo’s Online Services, Mother 1 and 2 (or Earthbound Beginnings and Earthbound) aren’t outside of the realm of possibility even though they are both SNES offerings and appeared on the SNES Classic Edition. But if Nintendo’s going to insist on teasing us with these cult classic RPGs, then it’s time Mother 3 got the localization it deserved. What better way than on the Nintendo Switch as a part of the online service? All three Mother games have grown a devoted following over the years with their quirky characters and dialogue, silly and at times satirical portrayal of American culture, and dark, emotional, and at times unsettling themes. Nintendo isn’t unaware of the love for these games in the west, and seems to enjoy the fan requests for Mother 3. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this incredible series won’t be left to languish on the Wii U Virtual Console alone. | Podcast: From I/O to the OnePlus 6 Posted: 18 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT ![]() On this episode of the Droid Life Show, we're back to (finally) recap Google I/O, the latest in Android P and the Android P Beta, the new Google News experience, what's coming later this year to Wear OS, and more from Google's big developer conference. But that's not all! We need to talk OnePlus 6 now that it has been announced, Tim's thoughts on the G7 ThinQ after spending a couple of weeks with it, what we are expecting from the HTC U12+ next week, and what to make of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. It's going to be a lengthy show, so unfortunately, that means no trivia this week. Apologies for that. It will return with our next show, though! We'll be live at 10AM Pacific (1PM Eastern). | Fortnite Updates Ever so Patient Android Users, Launch Coming This Summer Posted: 18 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT ![]() Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, have provided an update for Android users on when they can expect launch of the game. In a blog post published this morning, Epic says Fortnite is indeed still coming to Android and to expect it "this summer." Officially, summer in 2018 begins June 21 and ends September 22. Needless to say, we've got some time still. Back in March, when Fortnite was first announced for mobile, Epic said to expect it "in the next few months." We've never had a solid timeframe with regard to the Android version, but as an Android user since the beginning, none of this surprises me. Here's what Epic Games wrote this morning.
So nothing has really changed and we still don't have a concrete timeframe. Such is life for an Android user. // Epic Games The post Fortnite Updates Ever so Patient Android Users, Launch Coming This Summer appeared first on Guaripete. |
| OnePlus 6 Unboxing and First Look! Posted: 18 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT ![]() For those not subscribed to our YouTube channel, you may have missed this little guy last night. As the day was wrapping up, we tossed out an unboxing of the brand new, shiny and reflective as all hell, OnePlus 6. The unboxing experience is pretty standard OnePlus stuff. In fact, the packaging is identical to previous OnePlus phones, only with a giant "6" on it instead of "5" or "5T." But what you do get in this clip is our first reaction to the OnePlus 6 now that we've got one in-house and in-hand. We have lots of testing to do before we can reveal any final thoughts, but so far, this is living up to this story that I wrote the other day. The combination of price, specs, and hardware are all adding up to a phone that you should seriously, legitimately consider as your next phone purchase, assuming you aren't on Verizon. More to come! | Posted: 18 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT ![]() Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn’t get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can’t wait for our weekly roundups, and don’t want to wade through a whole day’s worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we’ve got a twist on Minesweeper, a beautiful avant-garde puzzle game, an arcade digging game, a skateboarding game, an arena shoot ’em up, an .io brawler, and a Disney-licensed RPG. Without further ado: Minesweeper GeniusAt some point in our lives, most of us have fallen victim to boredom to the point that we have explored the game Minesweeper on our computers. For me, I never found the number-crunching brain teaser gameplay that enjoyable. That is until now. Minesweeper Genius takes the core gameplay of Minesweeper and adds a fresh coat of paint that makes it all that much more a pleasure to play. Sure, the gameplay, by and large, is the same as you will still have to calculate how many mines are in each column and line, but there are also a few surprises in store for the player such as randomly generated levels and cloud saving support. Monetization: $1.99 / no ads / no IAPs — Inspired by the classic computer game from our childhood, Minesweeper Genius is a brain teaser that will challenge your mind and logical thinking. Help Aristotle – the genius with a broom – sweep the minefield to regain his memory and escape from the aliens’ scientific experiments, discovering where all the bombs are hidden. Homo MachinaWith a busy schedule sometimes you can’t cover everything you’d like. This is why I wanted to make sure Homo Machina made it into our bonus round this week. If you enjoy avant-garde artwork, learning about the internal workings of the human body through puzzle solving, and anything to do with the 1920s, then Homo Machina is the game for you. Just take one a look at the beautiful screenshots below, and you can see exactly what I’m talking about. This game is a work of art, and not only that, the puzzles are quite enjoyable, and the story and music shouldn’t be missed either. Monetization: $2.99 / no ads / no IAPs — Homo Machina is a puzzle game inspired by the work of avant-garde scientist Fritz Kahn. Set off on a crazy journey to solve the surreal puzzles of Homo Machina and learn about the internal working of the human body, represented as a gigantic 1920s factory. In this narrative puzzle, players are plunged into an ingenious system of nerves, vessels and valves. Diggerman – Arcade Gold Mining SimulatorLast week I published a roundup of games that ideally need to be properly ported to Android. One of those games was Mr. Driller, which in my opinion is one of the best digging games ever made. This is probably why I was instantly drawn to Diggerman. It takes some of its design cues from Mr. Driller, such as air capsules that you need to collect as you dig. What’s nice is that this actually has a story as to why you are digging, and it also has a few boss fights. Plus the controls are dead simple and the monetization is fair. Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $0.99 – $4.49 — Dig, dig, dig. For love, for fame, for money. The world was beautiful some time ago. We lived together in our lovely cottage digging some mud every day. Suddenly everything has changed. HUGE ANGRY MOLE has come and kidnapped my beautiful sweetheart. Will you support me? Will you dig with me and help me saving my beloved? Epic Skater 2I’m not quite sure what to make of Epic Skater 2. The swipe-based skateboarding gameplay is very gratifying, to the point that I would say mechanically this is one of the best skating games on Android. The problem is there are way too many interruptions. Multiple currencies, loot boxes, and a bunch of other flashy garbage is thrown in your face every time there is a break in the gameplay, which is not only intrusive but frequent. All I want to do is skate, but it seems the game would rather I spend all my time wading through its numerous splash screens and menus designed to pilfer my pockets. So yeah, if you can deal with the crappy design, there is actually a really enjoyable skateboarding game underneath. Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $1.99 – $9.99 — Epic Skater is back, rebuilt from the ground up and bigger than ever. Thank you for your feedback. Hop in, unlock and upgrade all of your tricks to land the biggest combos. Play the way you want. Look the way you want in Epic Skater 2. Explore the Streets of Epicwood. Launch up to the Rooftops for a long half pipe session, or cruise down to the Subways to catch every rail. Aero Smash -open fireZPLAY Games’ Aero Smash -open fire is a top-down voxel-based shooter that plays a lot like any other shoot ’em up. The thing is each stage has a border, and you are free to roam around inside, which makes it a lot less linear than your average shooter. Once you rack up enough kills you will face off against a boss. Your end goal is to collect as much currency as you can while shooting those enemies and bosses so that you can afford all of the cool skins available for your aircraft. Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $0.99 – $19.99 — Drive you plane to guard your territory and shoot down all the enemies. You can collect and own more than 135 kinds of planes. An unknown and thrilling adventure will be started from a random unique map. The world will show up as a huge map. 360-degree free shooting. AXE.IOCrescent Moon Games is known for publishing many phenomenal titles on Android such as Shadowblade, Morphite, and The Deer God. So it is no surprise to see that they had something to do with the release of AXE.IO. If you are at all familiar with how most .io games operate, then there shouldn’t be too many surprises here. Surviving as long as you can is the name of the game, and within this release, you can do so with style thanks to the pleasant graphics. I have to say I’ve enjoyed my time with it as there is nothing brightens my day more than mowing a few people down with an axe and sword. Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $1.99 – $99.99 — Thrown into a small battle arena with a squad of other deadly knights, you'll have to slay them with throwing axes and survive as long as possible if you want to get out alive. With action packed, fast-paced gameplay and brutal combat, AXE IO will have you on the edge of your seat. Disney Heroes: Battle ModeWhat can I say about Disney Heroes: Battle Mode that I haven’t already said in my hands-on? As a high profile release, it contains some great artwork (if a little drab), along with fantastic voice work and a somewhat interesting story. The level of polish is assuredly high, but then you have to consider the gameplay. For the most part, it plays okay as a free-to-play RPG, though if you don’t enjoy hero collection games, you’ll probably want to skip this. What turns me off is how aggressively this is monetized, especially when you consider that it’s clearly aimed at children. But hey, as long as you know what you are getting into, I see no reason not to check it out, after all, who doesn’t want to build a team of fighters out of their favorite Disney and Pixar characters? Monetization: free / contains ads / IAPs from $2.99 – $99.99 — Join the battle in this action-packed RPG starring Disney and Pixar heroes from The Incredibles, Wreck-It Ralph, Toy Story, Zootopia & more. Welcome to the digital City… and enjoy it while you can. A wicked virus is corrupting every pixel, turning even the heroes' own friends and family against them. Be sure to check out our gaming coverage from earlier this week: The post [Bonus Round] Minesweeper Genius, Homo Machina, Diggerman, Epic Skater 2, Aero Smash, AXE.IO, and Disney Heroes: Battle Mode appeared first on Guaripete. |
| T-Mobile pulled a Galaxy S9 and S9+ update more than a month ago, and it’s still not available Posted: 18 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT Slow and delayed updates are nothing new for Android devices, but T-Mobile and Samsung seem to be having more issues than usual. Back in April, T-Mobile had to halt the Note 8’s Oreo update for several weeks, but it turns out the Galaxy S9 and S9+ had some botched updates of their own. The carrier paused an update in April, and it hasn’t restarted more than a month later. The update in question was just for bug fixes and security patches, so it’s not as important as the Note 8’s update. However, users in several places reported bootloops after installing the OTA when it launched on April 13th. Apparently, that prompted T-Mobile to pause the update on April 14th. T-Mobile didn’t actually tell anyone about that, though. It only just updated the support pages for the S9 and S9+ to confirm the OTA is paused. At this point, it seems unlikely that the update (G965USQU2ARC6 or G960USQU2ARC6) will launch. It’s been a month and there are newer security patches available. If the update was so broken that it bootlooped phones, Samsung might as well start over with a new one anyway. | Posted: 18 May 2018 12:04 PM PDT ![]() Epic Games has officially announced that it is bringing Fortnite Battle Royale to mobile. Starting Monday, March 12, you can sign up for an invite event for iOS, though sadly support for Android is slated to release in “the next few months.” What is impressive though, is that this mobile version is planned to exist right alongside the PC and console releases, as it will include the exact same content and update schedule. Even more excitingly, it will support cross-play and cross-progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS, and eventually Android. While it does suck that Android is always treated as the redheaded stepchild of mobile, at least we know a release is planned. So despite a delayed release for Android, it would appear that Epic Games is indeed invested in bringing their battle royale third-person shooter to mobile. Considering that another competitor in the battle royale genre, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is making waves in China with a few different beta releases on Android, it makes sense that Epic Games would be in a pretty big rush to get Fortnite Battle Royale ported over sooner, rather than later. Details are still pretty light, but if the developers actually succeed in releasing this game in a state comparable to the PC and console versions, then we can probably assume what type of monetization it will use. As it currently stands the battle royale section of the game is free-to-play, though it doesn’t utilize any loot boxes and instead takes advantage of an optional subscription-like Battle Pass system that gives players a chance to earn cosmetic rewards in exchange for leveling up and completing challenges. So if the mobile version retains the same type of monetization, it should offer something a little different than the majority of FTP games on the Play Store. One thing I am left wondering about is how the developers will tackle the controls. If the game is going to support cross-play with the PS4 and PC, players on a touchscreen device are probably going to have a tough time competing. I would hope that controller support will be baked in upon its release. But I guess we will just have to wait and see about that. So yeah, there you have it. Fortnite Battle Royale is coming to Android sometime in the next few months. With the current popularity of the battle royale genre, I have to wonder how many games of this nature we really need before people get sick of it. While it’s nice to see some of the more popular names in the genre concentrating their efforts on our OS, I just hope that the gameplay of these titles can work just as well on a touchscreen as it does when playing on a system that supports controllers or a mouse and keyboard. So at this time, I am going to remain skeptical about how this upcoming release will turn out, at least until more info comes to light. But what do you think: are people going to burn out on this genre before it catches its stride on our OS, or is this merely a case of the more, the merrier? Fortnite is officially coming to Android this summer Epic Games has announced today in a blog post that Fortnite is coming to Android this summer. This narrows down what the studio initially expressed in March when it said Android would see a release in the next few months. You can read the full quote below.
Another interesting tidbit is that voice chat is in the works for mobile. Best of all, it’s being designed to work across all platforms, so no matter what system your friends are playing on, you should be able to chat with them as you play on your phone or tablet. So that’s pretty cool, though no date was given when this feature will actually land for mobile players.
