| Snapdragon 845 Platform Lets You Wirelessly Stream Audio to Multiple Headsets, Speakers Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() According to an announcement made by Qualcomm this morning, the Snapdragon 845 platform (you know, the processor that will be inside all of this year's flagship devices?), now supports Qualcomm Broadcast Audio. Like me when I first heard of this, you may be asking what Broadcast Audio is. Well, to put it as simply as possible, it allows users to wirelessly stream music from their Snapdragon 845-powered device to multiple headsets and speakers. For example, let's say you and a friend are taking a plane ride. With this tech, you can stream tunes to both you and your friend's wireless headsets, no dongles or 2-port adapters needed. So long as the headset or desired speaker is in Bluetooth range, you should have no issues connecting. Furthermore, Qualcomm states this tech features "near perfect synchronization," meaning regardless of which audio sources are connected, the audio playing should be synced well enough that you don't hear any odd timing. Broadcast Audio Features
As Qualcomm puts it, "Imagine the laughter of a group of teenagers sharing a new song amongst their individual headphones, a 'silent disco' with hundreds listening to a DJ that only they can hear, a guided tour with simultaneous translation or college dorm party where numerous speakers can participate to support an impromptu party, these are just some of the exciting possibilities our customers can support with broadcast audio." Qualcomm notes that Broadcast Audio will be demoed at this year's MWC, so expect to see more about this in the coming days. // Qualcomm Powered by WPeMatico The post Snapdragon 845 Platform Lets You Wirelessly Stream Audio to Multiple Headsets, Speakers appeared first on Guaripete. |
| Nest Aware No Longer Stupidly Expensive, Plus Nest Cam IQ Now has Google Assistant Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() Nest announced today that thanks to a new addition to the Nest Aware line-up of subscription plans, it's no longer so expensive to get a bit of access to your home security cameras' history. Additionally, if you own a Nest Cam IQ, it's now powered by Google Assistant. For the new Nest Aware plan, you can pay $5 and access up to 5 days worth of video history. That's a big deal because your only options previously were plans at $10 for 10 days or $30 for 30 days. And for those not aware, that's a per-camera fee. So that $5 or $10 or $30 per month only gets you video history to a single camera. If you want access to more cameras, you have to pay for each one. As you can imagine, it can get pretty expensive to have access to video history with Nest, which is why this $5 plan is nice to see. Wonder how that compares to others? Ring's Protect Plans include Protect Basic at $3 per month each, but that gets you 60 days (!) worth of video. They also have a Protect Plus for $10 per month that covers an unlimited number of cameras. For Logitech's Circle cameras, you get 1-day access free, plus there are $3.99/mo and $9.99/mo options. Those provide 14-day and 31-day history, respectively. As for the Google Assistant addition to Nest Cam IQ, this arrives via a free software update for all current and new owners. With Assistant on board, you get to say, "OK Google" to have it fire up and listen to your commands, just like a Google Home would. The update will arrive as a part of the Nest app's update that begins rolling out today. Once you have that new update, you'll head into the Nest app, opening settings and then look for the "Add Google Assistant" option. // Nest Powered by WPeMatico The post Nest Aware No Longer Stupidly Expensive, Plus Nest Cam IQ Now has Google Assistant appeared first on Guaripete. |
| AT&T announces its first 5G markets: Dallas, Waco, and Atlanta Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST AT&T has been vague on its 5G plans, saying only that a dozen cities will have 5G of some sort by the end of the year. Today, AT&T’s plans are slightly less vague. We know three of those dozen 5G markets: Dallas, Waco, and Atlanta. This 5G is different than AT&T’s hastily named “5G Evolution,” which is still just LTE. In fact, its 5G evolution features have been live on T-Mobile for a few years. The 5G rollout AT&T’s discussing today is new technology, though. AT&T says the aforementioned cities will be the first to get a taste of AT&T’s 5G network in the form of millimeter wave service. This is a higher frequency than what is traditionally used for mobile devices, so it won’t make for a very robust network on its own in an urban environment with lots of walls and buildings. AT&T says it will add more spectrum bands to its 5G network over time, and it will be fully compliant with 3GPP standards. The equipment AT&T is deploying for LTE and 5G Evolution will allow it to migrate to full 5G service in the coming years. AT&T hints that it’s working to make sure there’s 5G hardware of some sort available in late 2018, but it’ll probably be 2019 before there’s any kind of selection. | Chrome Beta 65 removes flag that opens all app links as Chrome Custom Tabs Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST If you open links in some Android apps, and you have Chrome enabled as your default web browser, the page might be opened in a ‘Chrome Custom Tab.’ Instead of starting up the whole app, only a minimal browser UI is shown, with a large close button that takes you right back to the previous app. This feature requires the app open links a certain way, and as such, there have always been some apps that don’t support Custom Tabs. By using a flag that was introduced in Chrome 52, known as #tab-management-experiment-type, it has been possible to force all links from Android apps to open in Custom Tabs. This was especially handy for apps that are no longer maintained. The flag originally had several settings, but over time, that was reduced to two – ‘Disabled’ (which would turn off all Custom Tabs, but appears to not work) and ‘Elderberry’ (which forces Custom Tabs for all apps). Left and center: Chrome 64 (stable); Right: Chrome 65 Beta It seems to have been removed entirely in Chrome 65, which is currently in beta. In other words, there is no longer a way to force all apps to use Custom Tabs. I was unable to find an explanation for its removal, and Google doesn’t officially comment in in-development Chrome features, so your guess for the reason is as good as mine. Chrome 65 is expected to be released on March 5 (at least on the desktop), so you have a little over a week left to enjoy the flag.

| Glitch Dash is a brutally challenging auto-runner that demands quick and precise movement Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:05 PM PST David Marquardt’s Glitch Dash is his third game released on the Play Store, and oh boy did he ever hit this one out of the park. Unlike most auto-runners, this is not a game for casuals. The difficulty is high, and it only gets higher the further you progress. Now I’m not saying this to scare away players as this is a beautiful running game that is a blast to play, but rest assured it will be quite a challenge to reach the end. When you first boot up Glitch Dash, you will have to play through an intro level that teaches you the primary controls of the game. Like most auto-runners, you will swipe up to jump, swipe down to duck, and swipe left and right to move in those corresponding directions. Your main goal is to make it through each stage. Your secondary goal is to collect all of the pink diamonds scattered throughout those stages. Now the thing is, it can be pretty difficult to make it through a level without dying. Luckily there are optional advertisements you can watch after you die to unlock a free checkpoint so that you can pick up where you last left off. You can also buy extra checkpoints through some of the game’s in-app purchases. Luckily you can easily ignore the smaller IAPs if you unlock the full content of the title for $9.99. And if you feel that is too expensive for an auto-runner you also have the option to purchase unlimited lives for $1.99. These unlimited lives don’t help too much with the game’s checkpoints, but they do guarantee that you can play as much as you like. Basically, free players have a few limitations that push towards IAPs while those that are willing to pay will have the option of a tiered premium experience. This is great for those that want to test the game out before spending any money, which seems fair to me. As for the gameplay, well, it’s your basic auto-runner, just with a higher skill floor. What really sets it apart from the majority of auto-runners is how it looks. This is a gorgeous game, especially if you crank up the graphical setting to high and 60fps. Movement is buttery smooth, and watching each level build itself as you run through it is quite enthralling. Oh, and have I mentioned the music? Because if not I would like to point out that the funky techno beats backing the gameplay is very fitting. So far I have been enjoying my time with Glitch Dash. Sure, it may take a good bit of memorization to get through some of the more difficult levels, but to me, that only provides more of a reason to keep playing. While it’s clear that auto-runners are nothing new on Android, it is nice to see one that actually offers a challenge while keeping a fair pricing model. It also doesn’t hurt that the game has a very original look that just has to be seen in action. If you are looking for a new auto-runner to work your way through that isn’t simply more of the same casual BS, definitely give Glitch Dash a look.
