| Samsung’s Upcoming Smartphones Will Have Active FM Chips Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() Upcoming smartphones from Samsung (possibly the Galaxy S9 line) will have active FM chips in the US and Canada, according to NextRadio. They'll join companies like LG and Motorola, which have already made similar moves in recent months. By having an active FM chip in Samsung phones, that'll mean access to FM radio broadcasts. While that's fun from an entertainment aspect (no data needed to stream radio!), this is an important move because of the access it gives to emergency broadcasts, even if cell coverage were to go down. Think about during a natural disaster, where all wireless communications might be down – you could at least keep up on information through an FM radio. NextRadio didn't say which phones this will be in, only that "upcoming" would have an active FM chip. // NextRadio Powered by WPeMatico The post Samsung's Upcoming Smartphones Will Have Active FM Chips appeared first on Guaripete. |
| Report: LG Pay Coming to US by June Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() After launching in South Korea last June, it sounds like LG is ready to bring its proprietary mobile payment service, LG Pay, to the US in 2018. According to Yonhap News, the launch could happen by June, meaning it should be announced alongside LG's upcoming flagship phone. Similar to Samsung Pay, LG Pay should be accepted at nearly any terminal, thanks to its usage of Wireless Magnetic Communication, which essentially duplicates the action of swiping your credit card. Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) has been the key to Samsung Pay's adoption in the US, considering not every retailer accepts NFC payments, like those from Google Pay (aka Android Pay) and Apple Pay. In this report, is specifically states LG Pay will be available in the US for the G7 and V40, even though neither of those names have been publicly mentioned by LG and it was thought LG was seriously considering a rebrand for its G lineup. Yonhap reports that LG will unveil its next flagship at MWC, even though that claim has also been contested recently. | We Played With Synaptics’ In-Display Fingerprint Reader and Can Confirm, It’s Dope Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() We've been talking about in-display fingerprint readers for what feels like quite some time now, but at long last, the tech is starting to catch up with our imagination. Synaptics and Vivo announced that we'd see what's marketed as Clear ID inside a flagship-level device at CES, and that's exactly what happened. The attention during our briefing was not on the phone, though, solely the barely visible fingerprint reader that sat below the device's display near the bottom chin. TL;DR: It was very cool and very much felt like the future of smartphones, not a gimmick. Somewhat surprising, but not too surprising since Synaptics has talked about how fast Clear ID is, the time it takes between placing your finger on the display and the phone unlocking is just as fast as a typical fingerprint reader. Not only is it fast, but there's a pretty legit animation that happens as the scan takes place, like a neon digital circuit array that looks nerdy, in a good way, and awesome. Setup is like any normal reader on Android, too, with users able to add multiple profiles for different fingers or users. For those worried about this reader somehow interfering with what you see on the display, we didn't see any sign of that. When the display is turned on, you don't notice any sort of lighting differences across the display, which was always one of my fears when it came to placing optical components under the display's glass. The experience was very natural and integrated into the UI, with Vivo saying the animation would popup whenever a user needed to use the fingerprint reader, whether it be for mobile purchases or app logins. With shipments of bezel-less phones continuing to grow, and expected to hit over 50% of all phone shipments by 2020 in a report from UBI Research, it seems like a natural evolution for other OEMs to adopt Synaptics' Clear ID, unless Apple and its marketing has blinded people into thinking Face ID is somehow superior, even though we've seen many demonstrations of that not being the case. Either way, we are living in a time where OEMs are figuring out new ways for users to unlock their devices, which at least gives us something new to talk about. After testing out Synaptics' Clear ID, my money is on fingerprint readers not being ditched for facial recognition anytime soon, considering it remains ultimately more convenient than holding a phone up to your face. That's just my bet, though. If you want to get Clear ID into your hands, the Vivo device will be hard to come by in the US (unless you're into the import game), but we'll certainly be on the lookout for other Android OEMs to incorporate this exciting tech. | What’s New in Google Data Studio? Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() The Data Studio team has been hard at work launching some new features, including clearer tables, colorful numbers, and more ways to visualize your data. Let’s take a look at the highlights: Learn more about pivot tables (and see how Sheets can now intelligently suggest them for you!) » Learn more about coordinated coloring » In this image, the table and pie charts both show sampled Google Analytics data (with orange indicator); the geo chart doesn’t. Google Analytics often samples data to provide accurate reporting in a timely manner. Data Studio reports now includes a simple Google Analytics Sampling Indicator to show you any component that contains sampled Analytics data. Learn more about sampling indicators » Field Reports Editing: Data Studio has recently added new functionality that makes it easier to create and edit the visualizations that you need, rather than going back and forth to the data source. You can use these new options to:
Display Images in Tables: The new IMAGE function is a useful way to display images in tables — for instance, adding YouTube video thumbnails or product images to your reports. Data controls let each team select the accounts that are relevant to them. Data Control updates: Data Control lets every user bring their own data to existing Data Studio reports. This means every user can select from a list of their own accounts to populate the visualizations — so there’s no need to build new reports for every account and user. This makes it possible to scale report "templates" across a number of users with different access to accounts, an important use case for agencies or companies with subsidiaries. And now Data Control supports Attribution 360 (TV Attribution) and DFP (DoubleClick for Publishers) data sets. Learn more about Data Control » We hope these new features will help you continue to make the most from Data Studio. Keep the data rolling! Note: Though not an official G Suite service, Data Studio is currently available globally for free. | OrangePixel’s open-world survival adventure ‘Ashworld’ just landed on the Play Store Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST ![]() OrangePixel’s Ashworld interestingly combines open-world survival gameplay with 2D platforming in a strange mashup of pixel-based post-apocalyptic madness. It was initially released on PC back in September of 2017, and it hit iOS three months later in December. But as always, Android users have to wait patiently for their turn. Well, it would appear that Ashworld has finally landed on the Google Play Store as of this morning and you can grab it right now for $3.99. The way Ashworld works is that there is a top-down view in an outer world that can be endlessly explored. This top-down view will seamlessly shift to 2D side-scrolling platformer view the second you enter any of the buildings you happen across while exploring the outer world. It’s a unique way to go about combing two popular genres into a crazy amalgamation of post-apocalyptic open-world survival gameplay and manic platforming action. The overall premise isn’t anything too involved. Basically, in 2017 a nuclear war devastated the planet, and 400 years later the plot picks up at a desolate campsite where you meet Dan, who tells you of a place that can help to fix up your car. From here you venture forward into the unknown with only your wits to help you survive. As you make your way through the begging of the game, you may notice that the controls change depending on whether you’re in the 2D platforming view, or the top-down outer world view. The fact that the controls are always changing and are dependent on where you are in the game can be jarring, especially when you consider that none of the controls float on screen. Their placement is hard coded, which means if your thumb is slightly askew, the buttons you are trying to press will not register your input. In the outer world this can be annoying, but in the platforming view, it is infuriating. While you can change the size of the controls in the settings, the lack of any floating buttons makes it really difficult to keep your eyes on the action instead of continually looking to see if your thumbs are in the correct position. Luckily the developers have included HID controller support with the Android release, so you can at least plug in your favorite HID controller over USB OTG and enjoy what is ultimately a vastly superior control method. It is, of course, worth pointing out that Ashworld is a premium release. There are no advertisements or in-app purchases included. Simply pay $3.99 upfront, and you can rest assured that no other costs will crop up in the future. With OrangePixel what you see is what you get, which is always appreciated. So it would seem that Ashworld is a mixed bag. It is interesting to see how the developers have combined two different genres into one seamless experience. But at the same time, the lack of a quality touchscreen control method shows where the game ultimately falters. If you plan on playing with a physical controller, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up Ashworld, but if you will be playing with the default touchscreen controls, you may want to wait and see if the developers address how unreliable they can be. | Motorola releases Oreo kernel source code for the Z2 Force Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST It only took about a month for Motorola to release the Moto Z2 Force’s kernel source code after it launched in August. As you may know, OEMs are required to publish their modifications to the Android kernel code, which is then used by developers to make custom ROMs and recoveries. The Z2 Force originally shipped with Android 7.1.1, but some models have since received an update to 8.0 Oreo. Motorola has now released the updated Oreo kernel source, after a few developers asked the company to publish it. You can grab the zip package from GitHub at the source link below.
