| Here are all the phones updated to support Project Treble [Continuously Updated] Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST One of the most important features included in Android 8.0 Oreo is ‘Project Treble,’ Google’s attempt to modularize Android. We covered it in detail here, but in a nutshell, Treble separates all the low-level device drivers (known as the ‘vendor implementation’) from the rest of Android. This makes updating phones/tablets to the latest version of Android much easier for manufacturers, as long as they already support Treble. There’s another major reason why Project Treble is getting people excited – custom ROMs. It is significantly easier to develop custom ROMs for phones with Treble, as opposed to ones without the feature. One developer was able to boot a stock Android Oreo ROM on the Huawei Mate 9 in only one day, thanks to Treble. It’s even possible to develop a single system image that works across vastly different devices, as long as they are Treble-compatible. If you’re curious about what phones and tablets support Project Treble, we’ll be continuously updating this list with compatible devices as time goes on. There is no guarantee that a device will have actively-developed custom ROMs, or faster Android updates, just because it supports Treble. There are other potential roadblocks to custom ROM development, like locked bootloaders. If you’re looking for phones and tablets to use custom ROMs with, we have a guide just for you. Devices updated to support TrebleWhen updating older phones and tablets to Oreo, the manufacturers can choose whether to support Treble or not. Every single device that starts off with Android 8.0 Oreo (or higher) already supports Treble. This includes the Google Pixel 2, Sony Xperia XZ, and other phones that launched with Oreo. Here are all the phones updated to support Treble, which did not start off with Oreo: EssentialHuaweiDevices updated to Oreo without TrebleThe vast majority of phones updated to Oreo from previous versions will not support Treble, because it is extra work that many manufacturers don’t want to do. For clarity’s sake, here are some popular phones that have received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo, but currently lack Treble support: NokiaOnePlusSony
If you notice a device missing, let us know by sending a tip (there’s a red ‘Tip Us’ link at the top of the page). See this post on XDA for instructions on checking Treble compatibility. | Weekend poll: How often do you use apps in Android multi-window mode? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST ![]()
Multi-window apps are a part of the mainstream Android experience now. Some OEMs like Samsung introduced the feature a bit earlier via their own implementations, but now anyone with a device running Nougat/7.0 can take advantage of it and enjoy the convenience of two apps at once. For certain workflows it can save a ton of time, especially if you have enough space to really take advantage of it, but how often do you actually use it? Some apps, like Google Maps, weren’t super useful until they were updated to properly take advantage of multi-window, and others still don’t work ideally just yet. But for those it does work correctly with, interacting with the contents of two apps at once can be a boon to productivity and convenience. Personally, split-screen is one of those things I almost entirely forget about. For one, it gets cramped. If one of the apps I’m using requires keyboard input, the space that’s left isn’t really sufficient for two apps. Doing stuff on a small screen is difficult enough as it is without cutting what’s left in half. And if limited visual space isn’t a problem, usually whatever I’m doing doesn’t require enough back-and-forth to merit two apps at once, switching in full-screen is fine. But, I avoid doing any real work on my phone/tablet. My experience may not be typical, though. Many of our readers use combinations like Google Maps and Waze while driving, or mix productivity apps. On rare occasions riding the subway, I’ve even tossed a few apps together, like Slack and Spotify or a reddit client. At least, when I remember multi-window is a thing.
But, what about you? How often do you use it?

| Microsoft Office Android apps now available on all Chromebooks Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST For years, one of the most common complaints about Chromebooks was that they couldn’t run the Office suite of applications. Microsoft has offered Android apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for a few years now, but they weren’t made available to all Chromebooks for some reason. Now it seems Microsoft has quietly opened up the Office apps to all Chromebooks. There has been no formal announcement from the company, but Robby Payne from Chrome Unboxed tried it on a handful of models (Samsung Chromebook Pro, Pixelbook, Acer Chromebook 15, etc), and it worked on all of them. There are several reports on Reddit of success as well. I’m sure many people buying a Chromebook already use Google Docs, but for the group of people looking to buy one without switching ecosystems, this is a massive selling point. While the Android apps don’t match all the functionality of the desktop versions, they have all the basics and support syncing through Office 365. Chromebooks have also been massively popular in schools, where many districts continue to use Office products. If you have a 10.1″ Chromebook (or smaller, if those exist), you can create and edit documents for free after logging in with a Microsoft account. For anything larger, you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents. More details about what features the subscription unlocks can be found here. | Linux Release Roundup: gThumb, Peek Gif Recorder + More Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST ![]() With the Thanksgiving celebrations in the US the past week was never going to be chock-full of new Linux releases. That said, a couple of juicy app updates did manage to squeak out during the past 7 days, including new releases of a Linux Winamp alternative, a free software stalwart, and one of my absolute favourite utilities. Ready to dive in? Me too! Peek 1.2.0
The weekend saw a sizeable update to what is (arguably) the best animated gif recorder for Linux: Peek. Peek 1.2.0 makes a number of changes to the UI. For one, it's now easier to select the format you want to record to (see gif above) thanks a nifty new menu next to the record button. The header bar is now also able to display elapsed time during recording, and there's visual indication when processing and saving of your animated gif/video. The amount of RAM and disk space used while rendering a gif has been 'reduced significantly' in this release according to Peek developer Philipp Wolfer. This is a direct benefit of switching to ffmpeg for Gif processing. Talking of processing, this release also adds support for Gifski, a GIF generator that's able to produce high quality GIF animations. "By cleverly combining separate frames it can create GIFs that display thousands of colors in a single frame," says Philipp Wolfe. Better quality gifs also means larger file sizes, which may or may not be preferable. Ubuntu doesn't have Gifski in its repos so you'll need to download a pre-compiled binary if you want to use it with Peek. Finally, this release also introduces support for recording to the animated PNG (apng) file format. Along with Parlatype, Peek is one of my favourite Linux apps. It is a well designed, well made, and reliable tool that does one thing, and does it exceptionally well. If you've seen an animated Gif in an article on this site (and the gif was made by me) it was probably made using Peek. There are multiple ways to install the Peek gif recorder on Ubuntu. There's a Snap app, a Flatpak available on Flathub, and a distro-agnostic AppImage, which we've linked to below: Download Peek 1.2.0 (64-bit AppImage) You can also install Peek on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and up by adding the official Peek PPA to your software sources. To do that just open a new Terminal and run these commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peek-developers/stable sudo apt update && sudo apt install peek gThumb 3.6.0
From one big release to another: this week brought a big ol' update to the oft-forgotten open-source photo manager gThumb. gThumb 3.6.0 improves Wayland support; images load faster; and the app will look nicer on high-resolution monitors thanks to improved HiDPI support. Other changes in this release include:
Sadly there's no easy way to install the latest gThumb on Ubuntu, short of building it from source. Launchpad is home to numerous abandoned PPAs; the app is not on Flathub; and there's no Snap app. An older version of gThumb is available in the Ubuntu archives but will (obviously) not include the improvements mentioned here. Cozy 0.4.1
Linux audiobook player Cozy has a minor new release out. Cozy 0.4.1 makes a number of minor UI improvements, adds feedback to the importer so that you know when files could not be imported. Cozy also has a new search feature to let you quickly find an audiobook by name, title, or any other matching keyword. Qmmp
We featured open-source audio player Qmmp (which stands for Qt Multi Media Player) last year, describing it as the perfect fit for fans of Winamp. Released at the weekend, Qmmp 1.2.0 debuts with a stack of improvements (too many to list here) including a selection of new plugins, among which is a file writer and a plugin for icecast output. Qmmp also introduces some new CLI options, adds a album cover-art tab to the 'track details' dialog, and lets you refocus the player using MPRIS controllers. To install the latest Qmmp release on Ubuntu you can add the following PPA, which provides builds for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and up: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:forkotov02/ppa sudo apt update && sudo apt install qmmp qmmp-plugin-pack Other ReleasesSome other updates you may have missed news of:

¿Usas Wunderlist, Todoist, Trello, Any.do, Keep…? | Disable the transparent Terminal background in Linux Mint Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST ![]() If you use the terminal on a system running Linux Mint, you will have noticed that the Terminal window is transparent on the system. While some Linux Mint users may not use the Terminal at all or rarely only, others may use it frequently. Whenever I use the Terminal on Linux Mint, I find its default design, and here specifically the use of transparency, irritating. You may feel the same, especially if you use a wallpaper that is not all black and gray, but uses other colors. The default level of transparency is set to a low value, but it still gets in the way in my opinion. Since I do capture screenshots sometimes as well, I dislike the transparency of the Terminal window as well as it makes the screenshots look less professional.
