| Net Neutrality Repeal Likely to Come Next Month in the US Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST ![]() Implemented two years ago, Net Neutrality forbids internet providers from blocking or throttling specific web pages or from giving preferential treatment to particular sites. Assuming the new rules pass, internet service providers will once again be classified as "information service" providers, which they were called between 1996 and 2015. In doing so, providers could eventually make some content arrive more quickly as others. As noted in the proposed order:
Apple and other technology companies are against repealing the net neutrality rules, while many of the latest ISPs are for the relaxing of the rules. The FCC is likely to vote for the repeal since President Donald Trump appointees now control the board. Should the US government repeat net neutrality rules? Let us know below. | Apple’s HomePod: Long Delayed, Playing Catch Up With Amazon Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST ![]() Though the HomePod was first announced in June, it has actually been in development. in one form or another, since at least 2012. At the time, it was a side project by a group of Mac engineers who wanted to create a speaker to compete with Bose, JBL, and Harman Kardon. Fast forward to 2014 and the arrival of the Amazon Echo, which Apple engineers quickly called "inferior." Unfortunately for Apple, the Echo quickly caught on. At the same time, Apple "dithered over its own speaker." As Bloomberg explains:
Even when the Apple HomePod finally does arrive, it will still be playing catch up with Amazon. As the report concludes:
A lot of smart speakers have passed my desk in recent months. Many of these are priced at under $200 and work with either Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Are these as good as the HomePod? I haven't a clue. However, at this price point, it might not even matter — especially with the $349 HomePod missing in action. Are you waiting for an Apple HomePod or buying an Amazon Alexa or Google Home-based speaker instead? Let us know below. | Google has Been Tracking Android Device Location Even With Location Services Disabled Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST You thought you were completely disconnected from any location tracking by Google and your phone when you went into your phone's location services and toggled them off, right? You'd be wrong! Hah…ha…haaa…ugh. According to a report from Quartz, Google has been doing a bit of location tracking on Android phones even if you told them not to by turning off your phone's location services. And we're talking about any of the modern Android phones you might own, so yes, you are included in this conversation. Quartz found that Google has essentially been pinging nearby cellular towers and retrieving that info through the Firebase Cloud Messaging service that manages push notifications and messages. Again, this is all still happening even if you have turned off location services on your phone. This collection of location via cell tower can happen over both WiFi and cellular data connection too, by the way. The data collected is encrypted, but the information still likely contains a unique identifier that when paired with the location info collected, does pose some security risk. Not everyone is comfortable being tracked at all times for various reasons. Google said that the location tracking was used to "further improve the speed and performance of message delivery." That's pretty vague, and the article mentions that Google probably also uses the info for advertisers to target you. Either way, this isn't a good look, especially at a time where we are all a little on edge about privacy. This started in early 2017 and is only now going to stop at the end of November, likely because they got caught. At least, that's the only logical reason I can come up with. Why else would they do this for almost an entire year and then decide to stop after an article was written, outing the secret tracking that no one can opt-out of? There is nothing you can do at this time to stop it other than wait for Google to stop doing it at the end of this month as they promised. // Quartz Powered by WPeMatico The post Google has Been Tracking Android Device Location Even With Location Services Disabled appeared first on Guaripete. |
| The OnePlus 5T is on sale today, and you can get $20 off accessories with purchase Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST It feels like just yesterday that OnePlus started selling the OnePlus 5. It was actually five months ago, which still is still pretty recent. Today, the new OnePlus 5T is on sale. It’s $20 more expensive than the OP5 was, but it has a bigger 6-inch display and a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. If you decide to get the latest OnePlus device, you can also snag some accessories at a discount. OnePlus has long since given up on the invite model, so you can just go to the website and buy the OnePlus 5T. It’s a good phone, especially considering the price. $499 gets you the version with 64GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. An extra $60 gets you 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. Both phones have the same Snapdragon 835, 6-inch 18:9 display, and 16+20MP dual camera. The phone should ship within seven days of ordering, and there are some special deals today. The 5T “Early Bird” bundle is available for half price. It includes a screen protector and case for $20 (offer valid through November 27). It just so happens, you can get $20 off accessories (it doesn’t have to be the bundle) if you buy the phone using this link. You can grab a different case, some earbuds, or a spare Dash Charge adapter. | Nova Launcher v5.5 adds search bar in dock, expanded adaptive icon support, and more Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST There’s an update rolling out today for Nova Launcher, and it’s a big one. There’s some Android 8.1 flair in this version, plus you can have more fun with adaptive icons. As usual, all the new features are optional and highly customizable. That’s why you use Nova, right? Here’s the changelog for Nova Launcher v5.5.
The bottom search bar that debuted with the Pixel 2 is now supported in Nova, but you can swap that out for a different widget if you like. That’s a nice touch. There’s also Android 8.1 styling for the popup menu. Adaptive icons are a cool feature in Android, but not all devices and apps support them. In the latest Nova, adaptive icon support goes all the way back to Lollipop. Apps that don’t have adaptive icons will also be reshaped to adaptive. If that works well, it could be very handy to avoid inconsistent icons. The new app is rolling out in the Play Store, and we’ve got it on APK Mirror. | Uber app updated with new features to help you through the holiday season Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST The Uber app is pretty convenient already, but there’s always room for improvement. Earlier in the year, the ability to message your driver via in-app chat was added, and now Uber has a few more enhancements that it hopes will help ease the stress during the festive season. Live location sharing is the headline addition. If you’ve got it turned on, the driver will be able to see exactly where you are in relation to the pickup point. So if you’re around the corner but on your, your driver will know to give you a few extra seconds. To help you find your driver, Uber is expanding its beacon program to NYC, SF, and Chicago. Beacons are windshield lights that can be lit up with any color the rider chooses, making it easier to spot your driver. The ‘Request for a Guest’ feature has also been improved. Your grandma will now receive an SMS with all of the trip details, and she’ll be able to respond to contact the driver directly. Getting into the holiday spirit, the final part of the announcement introduces in-app gifting so you can send someone else Uber credit. Not sure that’s the perfect way to say “whoops, I totally forgot to get you a present.” Powered by WPeMatico The post Uber app updated with new features to help you through the holiday season appeared first on Guaripete. |
