SOS! My MacBook charging cable is fraying! How do I save it?!

Posted: 01 Feb 2017 07:09 AM PST

How do I fix my fraying MacBook charging cable?

If you haven’t felt the absolute horror of seeing some exposed wire from your MacBook charging cable, then consider yourself lucky.

I’ve owned quite a number of MacBooks over the years, and every time I end up going through one or two charging cables. Am I harsh with them? Maybe. Do I bandage them up and try to make them last forever and ever? You bet your bottom dollar, I do.

Sure, you can easily go and pick up a new charging cable, but that costs a lot of money. So what’s a less expensive – yet effective! – solution? We’re here to help!

Here are a number of different ways you can fix the fraying charging cable of your MacBook!

Flex Tape

If you’re looking for a super strong, super durable, relatively easy to use and inexpensive tool to fix your MacBook’s charging cable (especially if the damage is to the cord itself!) then take a peek at the very appropriately named Flex Tape!

Designed as a thick yet flexible rubberized, waterproof tape that can easily twist and conform to almost any shape or object, Flex Tape acts as an additional layer of protection against any unwanted zaps from your charger’s exposed cord. The material it’s made with is also environmentally friendly and can can survive a wide-range of temperatures and outside conditions.

While you won’t need much Flex Tape to fix your cable (unless you’re like my boyfriend who has a foot of exposed wire he refuses to do anything about), having this stuff on hand just seems like a handy fix-it tool, especially when it comes to your MacBook.

You can pick up Flex Tape in large (4″ x 5′), jumbo (8″ x 5′), or giant (12″ x 10′), and the best part? You can choose between black or white so it seamlessly blends into your charging cable!

Liquid Tape

While tape is an okay fixer-upper tool for your MacBook charging cable, liquid tape has your bases taped down a lil’ bit better.

I had a USB cable for my iPad which had some insulation pinched off it… they can be a little pricey to replace. The better solution was to paint the frayed area with some of this liquid tape. It made for a nice discrete electrical repair without the tape adhesive residual that tape eventually acquires. (Amazon user John D. Hanig)

Designed to essentially be liquid electrical tape, this fast-drying adhesive is built to dry to a rubber based coating that still allows your cable to move flexibly and freely while keeping its wires secure and under wraps.

While you can pick up Liquid Tape in black, red, or green, look for the Liquid Tape in white to have it blend in better with your charging cable.

Sugru

Sugru’s mantra says it all: Stick it. Shape it. It turns into rubber.

The rest is really up to you!

Sugru acts as a super durable Playdoh of sorts. A mouldable glue, this adhesive putty is designed for fixing, making, and improving your things: and it’s the perfect thing for patching a hole in a MacBook charger.

The Sugru is made to stick to almost anything and once it’s been cured, can even bend and move like the plastic coating on your cable. Once you get your Sugru, the putty will stay good for around 13 months before it gets difficult to mold and work with.

You can buy the Sugru in a ton of fun colors, including red, brown, silver, blue, orange, green, pink, and yellow, or you could stick to the standard black and white.

Oh! And did we mention that they make their own tech-specific fit-it kit called the Rebel Tech Kit? You’re welcome!

Electrical Tape

If you’re really in a pinch to fix up your MacBook charging cable, then dig out an old roll of electrical tape and get tapin’!

It may not look like the prettiest DIY fixer-up job for your cord, but it totally does the trick – at least for a little while. Electrical tape isn’t the easiest thing to work with, and so it may punch and peel, even leaving a residue behind if you decide you want it off.

The best part about electrical tape? It’s cheap, so you can use as much of it as possible without feeling super guilty. Huzzuh!

Or when all else fails…

Just pick up a new cable

It sucks (we know), but it’s better than risking a fire-hazard or a big nasty shock.

How have you fixed your fraying MacBook charging cable?

Are you the type of person to hold onto your busted cable and keep performing Frankenstein-like surgeries on it to keep it alive? Or would you rather say “screw it” and buy a brand new cable?

Let us know how you’ve fixed your fraying fiascos in the comments below!

How to book dinner reservations for Valentine's Day with your iPhone

Posted: 01 Feb 2017 06:38 AM PST

You can plan your Valentine’s Day dinner and get to the restaurant, all from within Apple Maps. Here’s how!

The big couple’s day is approaching. I highly recommend that, if you’re planning a romantic dinner, you get the table booked as soon as possible. All of the top-rated restaurants will be booked before long and you don’t want to end up eating fast food under a harsh fluorescent light. You can find a restaurant, book a table, and either get direction or book a ride, all from Apple Maps. It’s simple and even kind of fun. Here’s how.

How to find a restaurant for Valentine’s Day with Apple Maps

So, you know you want to take your significant other out to dinner, but you just don’t know where. You can find local haunts right inside Apple Maps.

  1. Launch Maps from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the Search field.

  3. Tap Food.
  4. Tap Restaurants to see local eating establishments.
  5. Select a restaurant.

The restaurant summary includes information on hours, location, customer reviews, a listed website, and more. You can oftentimes see pictures of the different menu items to give you an idea if you will like the place.

How to make table reservations for Valentine’s Day with Apple Maps

If a restaurant takes reservations, you’ll see it listed under “Useful to know” when you select a restaurant. If it is compatible with OpenTable, you can book directly from within the app without having to leave Apple Maps. You’ll need the OpenTable app to use the extension in Apple Maps. If the restaurant does not work with Open Table, tap the phone number to call for a reservation.

  1. If the restaurant is compatible with OpenTable, tap the Reservations button at the top of the summary.
  2. Tap Change next to the date to change the date and time you want to make reservations for.
  3. Select a date and time from the Date picker.
  4. Tap Back when finished.

  5. Select from the available reservation options.
  6. Tap Book with OpenTable to complete the reservation.

How to get directions to your location on Valentine’s Day with Apple Maps

Once you know your location and have a table booked, you can get directions to the restaurant any time to see how to get there. You can check on traffic conditions or get directions for driving, walking, bike riding, and for how to take public transportation.

  1. Launch the Maps app from your Home screen.
  2. Enter the destination.
  3. Tap Directions.

  4. Tap the type of directions you want (walking, driving, etc.).
  5. Tap Go to start turn-by-turn navigation.

How to book a ride for Valentine’s day with Apple Maps

To avoid the time-consuming hassle of finding a place to park, and to ensure you don’t find yourself too inebriated to drive at the end of the meal, you can call for a Lyft or Uber, right inside Apple Maps. You’ll need the Lyft or Uber app in order to use the extension in Apple Maps.

  1. Launch the Maps app from your Home screen.
  2. Enter the destination.
  3. Tap Directions.

  4. Tap Ride.
  5. Tap Book next to the ride option of your choice.

Note: You can make reservations to have an Uber or a Lyft driver pick you up at a specific date and time ahead of time. Instead of selecting a ride option, tap Open in [Lyft or Uber].

Any questions?

Now you’re ready to make your dinner date for Valentine’s Day. Do you have any questions about booking tables or rides in Apple Maps? Put them in the comments and we’ll help you out.

Apple's the Largest Smartphone Vendor Again, Overtaking Samsung

Posted: 01 Feb 2017 06:38 AM PST

Between October and December 2016, Apple regained the title of world's largest smartphone vendor, according to independent research firm Strategy Analytics. The news comes after Apple announced record iPhone sales for the company's first quarter of the fiscal year 2017.

During the all-important holiday quarter, Apple shipped 78.29 million handsets, about 800,000 more units than Samsung. In doing so, Apple grabbed 18 percent of the overall smartphone market.

According to Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics:

This was the iPhone's best performance for over a year, as Apple capitalized on Samsung's recent missteps. Samsung shipped 77.5 million smartphones worldwide in Q4 2016, dipping 5 percent annually from 81.3 million units in Q4 2015. Samsung lost momentum in the quarter as a result of its Note 7 battery fiasco. Samsung captured 18 percent share for the quarter and 21 percent share for the full year, its lowest level since 2011.

Global smartphone shipments grew by 3 percent to hit a record 1.5 billion units in 2016. For the year, Samsung remained the largest smartphone vendor with 309 million units shipped. Apple followed with 215 million units.

Huawei (138.8 million), OPPO (84.8 million), and Vivo (71.9 million) rounded out the top five.

On Tuesday, Apple recorded revenue of $78.4 billion and profit of $17.9 billion during the first fiscal quarter of 2017. This represented Apple's first quarter of growth in a year.

Simple Menu Launcher Is The KDE App Launcher I’ve Been Dreaming Of

plasma simple menu for KDEI've recently started using KDE Plasma again after several years of only poking around in GNOME-based desktops, e.g. Unity, Budgie, Cinnamon, etc. While I wouldn't say I'm fully orientated in K Desktop Environment land just yet I am enjoying the learning curve; playing with a desktop environment as configurable as Plasma is actually rather fun, and encountering […]

How to back up your iTunes library

Posted: 01 Feb 2017 05:05 AM PST

How do you back up your iTunes Library and make sure your music, movies, TV shows, and more are safe and sound? Like this!

Updated February 1st, 2017: Added information about backing up with macOS Sierra.

Though we store more and more of our music online these days, a hard-copy backup is still the gold standard for keeping your data safe. And if you use Apple Music or iCloud Music Library, the best way to do that is still iTunes.

There are a few ways to back up your iTunes library; it’s important to choose one and regularly back up so that you won’t have to worry about your local copy getting lost or damaged. My music — at least for me — is one of those must-backup items; I don’t want to have to manually re-build or re-buy thousands of tracks.

First: Make sure your entire library has been locally downloaded

If you use iCloud Music Library or the iTunes Store, you may have some or all of your music stored in the cloud. But to truly make sure your purchased and owned content is backed up, you’ll want to download a local copy to your Mac. Here’s the best way to do so:

How to download all your music from iCloud Music Library to your Mac

How to back up iTunes via Time Machine or another backup service

If you have Apple’s Time Machine backup system enabled — or any other cloud- or system-based backup — your iTunes library should automatically be covered. This way, if you ever need to restore, you can just pop back in Time Machine’s History (or a past backup from CrashPlan or Carbon Copy Cloner, for example) to retrieve it.

How to manually back up your iTunes library

If you’re not employing a Mac-wide backup service (really, you should get on that), or if you just want to manually back up your iTunes library separately, here’s how to go about that.

Consolidate your library

To ensure that all of your iTunes files are in the same place when you make a manual backup, you should first consolidate your iTunes library.

  1. Make sure you’ve downloaded a local copy of your music to your Mac.
  2. Launch iTunes on your Mac.
  3. Click File in the upper left corner of your Mac’s screen.

  4. Hover your cursor over Library in the drop down menu.
  5. Select Organize Library from the secondary menu.

  6. Tick the box for Consolidate Files when the Organize Library window appears.
  7. Click OK.

This will make a copy of all files in the iTunes media folder, leaving the originals in their current location.

Copy your iTunes library to a backup source

  1. If you are using an external hard drive, connect it to your Mac using a USB cable.
  2. Click on Finder to open a Finder window.
  3. Select your Mac’s Hard drive.

  4. Click on the Music folder.
  5. Select iTunes and drag that folder to the external hard drive icon on your desktop or copy it to your online backup service.

  6. Click Authenticate, if prompted, to give permission to make a copy of the iTunes folder.
  7. Enter your administrator password.
  8. Click OK.

The copy process will begin. This could take a very long time, depending on how big your iTunes library is. So, sit back, relax, watch a movie, or whatever you do to pass the time.

Desperate times call for desperate measures

If you are about to do something wild with your iTunes library and don’t have a way to back it up on an external drive or online backup service, you can make a temporary backup that you store right on your Mac. This is, by no means, a solid backup plan, but can be useful in a pinch.

Note: After making a copy, it is a good idea to move the copied folder to an easy-to-find location that is separate from any folder you plan to make changes to (like the Music folder). This copied folder should be deleted immediately after it is no longer needed because it takes up extra space on your computer’s hard drive unnecessarily and could cause confusion with your most current iTunes folder.

  1. Click on Finder to open a Finder window.
  2. Select your Mac’s Hard drive.

  3. Click on the Music folder.
  4. Right-click or control-click on the iTunes folder.
  5. Select Duplicate from the drop down menu.

    • The copy process will begin. This could take a very long time.

  6. Move the copied iTunes folder to a new, easy-to-find location.

  7. Delete the copied iTunes folder once you no longer need the temporary backup.
