How to transfer ripped videos to your iPhone or iPad from your Mac

Posted: 31 Jan 2017 07:05 AM PST

Want to watch your ripped movies on your iPhone or iPad? Here’s what you need to know.

I’ve moved across country three times in the last ten years, and discarded most of my physical DVD collection throughout those moves. I’ve kept only a few noteworthy films in their original disc format; the others I either repurchased through iTunes, or ripped them to my computer to play on my iPad.

Normally, if you have media that you own and want to play on your iOS device, the pathway to doing so is pretty simple: Rip and encode into an iOS-playable format using a DVD drive and ripping software, then drag and drop the file into iTunes and sync with your Mac.

Unfortunately, a few users on iOS 10.2 have noticed issues with certain files not playing if the video’s metadata was tagged as “TV Show” or “Movie”.

Whether you’re having trouble with iOS 10.2 or you just want to know the general steps for moving ripped videos onto your iPhone or iPad, here’s the deal.

How to sync your ripped videos to iTunes

  1. Choose your movie file from the Finder.
  2. Drag your movie file from the Finder to your iTunes library.
  3. Type the name of your movie file in the search bar to find it.

  4. Click on the More button to the right of the file name (looks like three dots).
  5. Select Get Info.
  6. Rename your movie file under the Details screen.

  7. You can also sort your movie by going to Options > Media Kind.
  8. Press OK.

How to sync your ripped videos to your iPhone or iPad from iTunes

Even if you use Apple Music, the App Store, iCloud Photo Library to sync your content to your iPhone wirelessly, you’ll need to manually connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac to upload your videos. In doing so, don’t worry: You won’t overwrite your photos, apps, or music preferences, and you won’t be forced to back up to iTunes if you currently back up via iCloud.

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac via its charging cable or Wi-Fi Sync.
  2. Once connected, open iTunes.
  3. Select the Phone icon in the left corner of the toolbar.

  4. Go to either the Movies or TV Shows section under the left column.
  5. Check Sync Movies or Sync TV Shows and choose whether you wish to include all videos or selected options.
  6. When finished, press Apply or Sync in the bottom right corner.

  7. iTunes will then sync your videos to your iPhone.

How to find and watch your videos on your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the TV app (Video app outside of the U.S.).
  2. Select the Library tab.
  3. If you tagged your video as TV Show or Movies, it should show up under those respective tabs. If you didn’t tag your video, it will show up under Home Movies.

  4. Tap on your video’s thumbnail.
  5. Press the Play button.

Videos not playing in the TV app? Here’s the fix

As I mentioned above, some users are having issues with the TV app: It will display videos they’ve uploaded, but error out on playback. Currently, this seems to happen at random, and only with files tagged as TV Show or Movie; here’s how you can fix it.

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Type the name of your movie file in the search bar to find it.
  3. Click on the More button to the right of the file name (looks like three dots).
  4. Select Get Info.
  5. Go to the Options tab.

  6. Select Home Movie under the Media Kind dropdown.
  7. Press OK.

If you’re still having issues syncing your movies, we suggest chatting with Apple Support.

How to sync your ripped videos to your iPhone or iPad via iCloud Photo Library

If you’d prefer to avoid using iTunes altogether, there’s another way: the cloud! Yes, you can upload your ripped videos to the Photos app and have them sync to your iCloud Photo Library (if enabled), but there are a few drawbacks.

For one, videos take up a significant amount of storage space in your iCloud account — if you’re on a free or 50GB plan, you’ll run out storage pretty quickly. Additionally, because there’s no way to save Photos files for offline play, you may not have the video you want accessible to you while in an airplane or other circumstance without internet connectivity.

That said, if you can’t get iTunes to work, this is an alternate option.

  1. Find the file you wish to upload to iCloud Photo Library.
  2. Open the Photos app.
  3. Go to File > Import… or drag and drop the file into the Photos app.

  4. Wait for the file to sync with iCloud Photo Library.

After the file finishes syncing, it should appear in your iPhone or iPad’s Photos app under the Videos album.

SoundCloud update adds Charts, showing what music is popular right now

Posted: 31 Jan 2017 07:05 AM PST

If it’s indie music and new, unknown artists, chances are it’ll be on SoundCloud. The Berlin-based company has long pioneered a music platform that doesn’t focus on the big, stadium-filling artists, but on the small, independent ones. An update to the app adds in Charts, letting users see what others are listening to on the service and what is popular at any given moment. While these were actually added in the previous version, they’ve just been added to the changelog, indicating it’s possible they were rolling out on a server side basis.

Limit Firefox audio playback to one tab

Posted: 31 Jan 2017 06:05 AM PST

Smart Tab Mute is a browser add-on for the Firefox web browser that limits audio playback in the browser to a single tab at a time.

If you open five tabs with videos, games and other content that plays audio in your browser of choice, you may notice that audio starts to play out of all five tabs regardless of active tab.

While that may not be such an issue, the fact that audio playback is enabled for all five tabs as well is one.

There are manual ways around this, for instance by never opening more than one tab that plays audio at a time, or by pausing any secondary video or audio stream.

Note: Smart Tab Mute is based on a Google Chrome extension. If you use Chrome, you can download and install the extension to get the same functionality.

Smart Tab Mute

smart tab mute

Smart Tab Mute is one of those browser extensions that you don’t interact directly with. It sits silently in the background, and becomes active automatically when a second or more tabs are opened that play video.

It uses a straightforward algorithm to determine what to do then. Any audio playing tab that is in the background gets muted automatically, while the foreground tab continues to play audio.

If the foreground tab does not play audio, the last tab that gets opened is allowed to play audio, while all other tabs are muted automatically.

The audio playing tab that was opened second last is allowed to play audio automatically when you close that last tab, and so on.

This means that audio playback is started automatically in this situation, so that you don’t even have to click on the mute icon or even switch to the tab to start playback.

Smart Tab Mute won’t interfere with audio elements that you have stopped or paused manually however. It won’t start those videos or media streams on its own again if that is the case.

The add-on ships with two options that let you control the behavior somewhat. The first blocks the unmuting of the last tab automatically when the currently playing tab is closed.

smart tab mute blacklist

The second option provides you with a blacklist of sites that you want to exclude from the add-on’s functionality. This can be useful if you want to ensure that a service may always play audio, for instance when it uses audio for its notification system.

Closing Words

Smart Tab Mute is a useful Firefox add-on for users of the browser who run sometimes or often into situations where multiple sites start to play audio at the same time.

Now You: Did you ever run into audio playback issues in your browser of choice?

How to watch the 2017 Super Bowl on iPhone and iPad

Posted: 31 Jan 2017 05:38 AM PST

Can’t be home for the big game? No TV? Watch on your iPhone or iPad!

Super Bowl LI is coming up quickly and if you can’t be around a giant TV for the big game, you can still watch on your iPhone or iPad. Here’s how!

In the U.S.

Fox Sports Go

For a completely free experience, download the Fox Sports Go app, and see Super Bowl LI in all its glory, including the reason everyone actually watches the game: the commercials.

This year, Fox is offering a non-authenticated stream (no subscription or password required) so that fans all over the U.S. can watch the Patriots take on the Falcons. You’ll be able to watch on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Fox has actually made the game available on just about every platform under the Sun.

If you want to stream the game for free, there really is no better way. Hell, if you want to stream the game at all, just go with Fox Sports Go. You can delete the app after if you really want to.

NFL app — Verizon customers only

All Verizon customers get exclusive access to live content and that includes the Super Bowl again this year.

If you’re on Verizon, just download the NFL mobile app and you’re in like flint.

Outside the U.S.

If you’re outside the U.S., you kind of get the short end of the stick with this one, since there aren’t really any free ways to watch on iPhone and iPad without doing something illegal. And I could not do that in good conscience.

NFL Game Pass

You can download the app for free, though you have to pay a subscription fee in order to watch the Super Bowl, and it’s a little pricey this year, at $34.99. You don’t just get Super Bowl LI, though; you get the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, as well as every Super Bowl from 2009 to 2015. Not sure why you’d want to watch those oldies, but there it is. If you don’t want to pay, you’re probably better off headed out to a pub or friend’s place.

In Canada: CTV GO app

If you live in Canada and you have a TV subscription package that includes CTV, you can stream the Super Bowl on your iPhone or iPad via the CTV Go app. It’s free (aside from your cable subscription).

That’s pretty much it

If any other ways to watch on your iPhone or iPad pop up between now and the Super Bowl, we’ll let you know!

How do you watch?

Are you tuning in to the Super Bowl this year? How will you watch? Let us know in the comments below!
