| Common iPad problems and how to fix them Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:06 AM PST How do you get your iPad working again when it’s just not starting, stopping, connecting, or otherwise working? Here’s how to troubleshoot all your issues! iPad is an amazing computer that manages to be powerful, portable, and accessible all at the same time. If it’s working. If it’s giving you problems — if it’s sluggish or stuck, won’t power off or power back on, if the battery is draining fast or not charging properly, if you can’t connect to Bluetooth, HomeKit, or AirDrop — then it can be frustrating. Your first instinct might be to call Apple Support or visit the Genius Bar, but that all takes time. If you just want to get everything working again, here are some things you can try on your own, and try right now! How do you restart, reboot, and recover your iPad?Reboot Windows! is a running joke in the technology world, but restarting your devices works. It kicks any stray bits back into place and can fix a lot of problems. Powering down and powering back up is a simple way to start. Then you can escalate to hard resets and even restores if you need to. You also don’t have to reset everything. If only one aspect is bugging you, you can reset your iPad’s settings, remove network connections, erase content, zap the keyboard dictionary, rearrange the Home screen, or dump Location and Privacy data.
How do I fix problems with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other connections?Connections have become… complicated. It’s not just a matter of turning something on anymore. Bluetooth broadcasts availability and creates connections, Wi-Fi transfers data fast so it doesn’t waste a lot of power, and a bunch of different services from handoff to AirDrop, HomeKit to tethering try to manage it all. If your connections aren’t connecting, though, there are a few things you can try!
What if you iPad won’t charge, gets terrible battery life, won’t shutdown, or won’t start up?Whether your battery is draining unreasonably fast or it’s taking far too long to recharge, not having enough power when you need it is unacceptable. Likewise if your iPad refuses to shut down or won’t power back up when you need it. Luckily, even when it comes to batteries, there are a few fixes you can try on your own.
What if nothing is working?Sadly, not every problem can be solved through troubleshooting alone. Sometimes you really will need to contact Apple. You can call the company at 1-800-MY-APPLE, tweet them @apple_support, visit them online at apple.com/support, or go straight to your local Apple Retail Store. What problems do you need help solving? If you’re having an issue with your iPad and it’s not addressed in this guide, or if you’ve found a solution that works better, drop it in the comments below! | Spigen Kuel AP12T Car Mount: Worth taking for every ride! Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:06 AM PST Spigen’s Kuel AP12T Car Mount is one damn good car mount! Whether you’re using a car mount as a way to have easy access to your phone, or as a dash cam for peace of mind in case trouble arises on the road, look no further than Spigen’s Kuel AP12T Car Mount. Place it where it’s convenient for youNot everyone likes their car mount in the same spot. Heck, I find myself adjusting the positioning or my car mount depending on how far I’m driving.
After testing the Kuel AP12T in two different sized cars, one a large, roomy family sized sedan, and the other a small, compact economy car, I never had and trouble finding a comfortable position for it to rest. The two pivot points (the one near the base and the one near the head) made it easy to adjust it’s position to fit into the compact economy car, while the extendable arm made sure my phone was within reach in the large sedan. It works almost anywhereI tried Spigen’s Kuel AP12T Car Mount in two different cars, both with significantly different dashes. One car had a very flat, textured plastic dash while the only had a smooth, curved faux-leather dash.
After a few hours of driving in stop-and-go traffic, on high-speed highways, and even gravel roads, the adhesive suction cup didn’t fail in either car. I was pleasantly relieved my phone didn’t end up on my floor mats and was surprised at the strength of the adhesive. The adhesive suction cup is strong, maybe even too strong, as I would sometimes struggle to get the car mount off the dash. Now, this may not be a big deal if you never intend on moving it, but fair warning to those who don’t want to leave the AP12T attached to their dash at all times, you’ll need to use a bit of muscle. However, the suction cup never left a mark on either dash or any windows I stuck it to, so you shouldn’t have to worry about left of residue from the adhesive. One Touch MagicWhen you’re on the run, the last thing you want to do is fumble around trying to secure your phone to your car mount, that’s when the one touch securing method of the Kuel AP12T shines. By pressing the button in the middle of the head, the bumpers will close firmly, securing themselves to your phone nice and snug. Without having to use more than one hand, you can easily push your phone into the head and secure it to the car mount in the blink of an eye. Getting your phone out of the Kuel AP12T is a slightly different story. There is no one-touch solution to remove your device; you instead need to push in the plastic tabs protruding from the head to reset the one-touch mechanism. Once again, this is far from a serious problem, but when not being mindful (like one is when they find themselves in a rush) you may drop your phone. The bottom lineSpigen’s Kuel AP12T Car Mount is the real deal. The versatility of its design enables you to find a comfortable position, no matter the size of your car. The adhesive suction cup is unbelievably strong, remaining firmly in place throughout various road conditions. The ease of which you can affix your phone to the adjustable head with Spigen’s one-touch button keeps you on the move through the busiest of days. The Kuel AP12T is a solid buy for anyone looking for a reliable multi-purpose car mount. | When It Comes to iPhone 7 Sales, Bigger Is Better Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:06 AM PST ![]() It looks like iPhone 7 sales have been heavily influenced by the hardware differences between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. When it launched in September 2016, the iPhone 7 Plus became Apple's first 5.5-inch handset to include hardware not found on the standard 4.7-inch model, the iPhone 7. Apple's strategy, though initially based on hardware constraints, has been working in terms of sales, according to The Wall Street Journal. Cowen & Co. notes that Apple customers are willing to pay more for better features. The investment and research firm notes that the iPhone 7 Plus accounted for 40 percent of iPhone sales during the all-important holiday quarter. One year earlier, the iPhone 6s Plus accounted for 23 percent of sales. This difference represents a jump of 17 percent. Between October through December, Cowen & Co. estimates that iPhone 7 sales totaled 58.5 million units worldwide. Apple will announce total iPhone sales for the quarter tomorrow, Jan. 31. Besides a larger screen, the iPhone 7 Plus features a dual-camera system not found on the iPhone 7. Additionally, the larger handset offers longer battery life and more RAM. In the United States, the iPhone 7 starts at $649; the iPhone 7 Plus begins at $769. | High-Res Imagery of LG’s New Watch Style Arrives Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:06 AM PST ![]() Over the weekend, high-res imagery of the new LG Watch Style found its way onto Twitter, thanks to Evan Blass. Supposedly, this is the smaller of the two new LG watches said to arrive within the next couple of weeks, a watch that we have seen before only in low-res form. What do we learn from these new photos? A couple of things. For one, we now have a picture of the silver variant, alongside a better look of the rose gold model. As you can tell, there is no heart-rate monitor or extra embellishment with this watch – it's really just about the simplest, classic design of an Android Wear device we have seen in some time. It also appears to be quite thin, with angled lugs that should allow for a comfortable fit when on wrist. We are getting a good look at the crown as well. This crown is supposedly able to help you navigate the watch, similarly to how the Apple Watch's Digital Crown works. That should mean spinning it to jump up and down your timeline, while pressing the button in for additional actions. It sticks out a bit much, in my opinion, but if Google wants our little stubby fingers grabbing it, that's probably necessary. A report out of Android Police pegs this watch at around $249. Both watches look very simple, which may not be a bad thing. If previous reports are true, you could be buying one by next week.
| Temps: beautiful but demanding cross-platform weather program Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:06 AM PST ![]() Temps is a cross-platform weather program for Windows, Linux and Mac that is beautiful, but eats more RAM in Megabyte than there are rainy days in England. So, if RAM is not an issue on your device, you may read on if you are interested in a new weather application. You may notice that Temps is a demanding application right when you start the 50 Megabyte download from the developer site. The 64-bit version for Windows has a size of more than 130 Megabytes unpacked which is gargantuan for a weather app. The application is portable, and you may run it from any location though; so that is good and useful. TempsWhen you run Temps, you may notice two things. First, it requires an Internet connection to download weather information, and that it won’t necessarily identify your current location correctly. The data is pulled from OpenWeatherMap, and it uses a default API key on first start. The author notes that you may want to grab your own API key from the service — the free version is sufficient — so that you don’t run into situations where too many users of the program try to download data from the service at once. Next thing you may want to do is open the Settings of the program to change the location. Most cities and countries are identified correctly, so enter London, UK for instance to set the location to London, and have Temps download weather information for that location. There are a couple of additional options available there. If you are from the US, you may switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit, and from the default 24 hour format to the 12 hour format. Also, you may disable auto-start with the operating system, and disable showing the current weather as the program icon by default. Weather information is limited to the current day, and the next four days. The app displays the temperature, and weather conditions (sunny, light rain, light intensity drizzle rain..), and a temperature graph for any of the four next days. That’s all there is to it right now. As far as memory usage is concerned, it is quite high. Temps ran three processes on a Windows 10 64-bit test system on start which used more than 230 Megabytes of memory. Alternative: check out our overview of the best weather programs for Windows. Temps uses Electron which explains its size and memory hunger. Closing WordsTemps is a beautiful minimalist weather application. It is resource hungry on the other hand, and it lacks information such as wind speed, humidity, or sunrise/sunset information that other weather apps offer. Again, it is a beautiful program, but its resource requirements probably make it unattractive for the majority of users. Now You: Do you use a weather application? Ghacks needs you.
| Linux Mint 18.1 KDE and Xfce released Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:42 AM PST ![]() The Linux Mint team has just released the long term support release Linux Mint 18.1 as a KDE and Xfce edition to the public. The new version of Linux Mint brings software updates and refinements mostly. First, some information on Linux Mint 18.1 being a long term support release. The Mint team will support Linux Mint 18.1 with security updates until 2021. Future versions of Linux Mint will use the same base package as Linux Mint 18.1 until 2018. This ensures that it is easy to update to new versions. Starting in 2018, the Linux Mint team will work on a new base package and focus its efforts on it. The previous versions of Linux Mint will be supported until 2017 (Linux Mint 13), or 2019 (Linux Mint 17.x). Linux Mint 18.1 Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon, released earlier this month If you are upgrading from Linux Mint 18, you can use the built-in Update Manager for that as it offers the most convenient experience:
Check out our detailed how to upgrade Linux Mint guide for additional information on the process. Some features of the new Mint version are available in the KDE and the Xfce release. Many are edition specific however. Linux Mint 18.1 What’s NewThe Update Manager may display the Origin of an update in the latest version. You need to enable it under View > Visible Columns > Origin in the Update Manager menu before it becomes available. Kernel updates are highlighted better in the Update Manager, and when you open the kernel window, kernels are now sorted by version and recommendations are given for the most stable, and the most secure kernel. The Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce edition ships with updates to built-in applications, and even some changes. Xed for instance saw improvements to the on-page search functionality. Search opens at the bottom now instead of the top so that it does not obstruct part of the text anymore. It is real-time now as well as it finds text while you are typing, and you may tap on the Enter-key at any point in time to jump to the first result quickly. The editor supports dark themes fully in the latest version, and highlights to you if it is run with administrative privileges. Xplayer, the media player, may blank secondary displays now when playing a video in full screen. Other improvements include full compatibility with EXIF orientation tags, and that the rotation plugin and the subtitle plugin are enabled by default. The media player Banshee was replaced with Rhythmbox in Linux Mint 18.1. The reason given was that Banshee “suffered many regressions lately”. Other improvements in Linux Mint 18.1
You can check out the release notes for Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce and KDE here. Download links for the latest ISO image of Linux Mint 18.1 are provided on the official site. This is useful if you want to test the new version in a Live CD or virtual environment first, or install it from scratch. Ghacks needs you.
