| Samsung Still Seems Confused on Its Foldable Phone, But It’ll Run Special Android Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Samsung is planning big things for its next round of phones, that much has been made clear by rumors and on-the-record interviews from executives. A new report today adds additional clarity into what we can expect from the Galaxy S10 when it arrives in 2019, but Samsung's years-in-the-making foldable Galaxy phone sure sounds like it's still in limbo or that Samsung isn't sure what to do with it. The scoop comes from Bloomberg, who dropped a bunch of little bits of info that help round out the story of Samsung's upcoming phone launches. To start, we're now supposed to expect not only a Galaxy S10 (codenamed "beyond") with in-display fingerprint reader, but Plus and cheaper models too. There may be a 5G variant at some point, one that will work with Verizon's 5G network when it launches early next year. The Galaxy S10 and S10+ will have curved edge displays with almost no bezel on top or bottom, triple cameras on their backsides, with front cameras being embedded underneath the front glass. I'm not sure if that refers to a display breakthrough that'll eliminate notches by simply cutting out holes for front cameras or if that means a similar setup to what we already have with Samsung phones. Either way, I'm now more curious than ever. Samsung is reportedly working on a prototype Galaxy S10 without a headphone jack, but it may never move out of the prototype stage. I sure hope it doesn't. As for the foldable or bendable Galaxy phone that we've been hearing about for so long, we may not see it until Q2 of next year. I know that Samsung's mobile boss already said they'd show it off at their developer conference next month, but Bloomberg isn't so sure they'll have a physical model on hand and may instead just show a detailed conceptual image of it. Ugh. Codenamed "winner" and with a 4-inch outer display, the foldable phone is still supposedly not finalized. Samsung can't figure out if they want it to unfold vertically or horizontally and they aren't super excited about the display or how people might react to it, as it's "coated with a film that feels like ones used in photography." That sounds awful. In an interesting tidbit, it's being reported here that Samsung has worked closely with Google to develop some sort of special version of Android for the phone. The interface isn't quite finalized and will depend on which way they decide to unfold it. So to recap, the foldable phone is still not ready, the Galaxy S10 sounds fun, and it's Friday. // Bloomberg The post Samsung Still Seems Confused on Its Foldable Phone, But It'll Run Special Android appeared first on GuaripeteMagazine. |
| Anker’s Nebula Capsule II Projector Runs Android TV, Ups Resolution to 720p (Updated) Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Anker's original Nebula Capsule was a pretty cool piece of technology, mostly because of what was packed into its little body. It was a projector first and foremost, but it also ran Android for streaming all of your favorite content and didn't cost an arm and a leg. Today, Anker announced the follow-up, called Nebula Capsule II, with some nice upgrades, including Android TV. The new Nebula Capsule II pushes a video resolution of 1280×720 (upgrade from 480p in the original), 200 ANSI ln brightness, 8w speaker with dual passive radiators, Bluetooth, WiFi, USB-C port in addition to HDMI and AUX, 10,000mAh battery, and Android TV (which means you can Cast to it too). With Android TV on board, you'll get more of a TV experience like you might find through NVIDIA SHIELD TV. That's a much better experience (in my opinion) than simply trying to Cast items to it. However, if you can't find an Android TV app that you need, you can always fall back to Casting to this new Nebula Capsule II. If you were looking for a negative in the new model, it would be in battery life. Even with the battery size almost doubling, that higher resolution must be the reason video playback time has dropped from 4 hours to 2.5 hours. That's barely enough time to watch a full movie. The device will hit Kickstarter starting tomorrow, October 26. Pricing for super early bird runs $349, early bird is $369, and pricing after that jumps to $399. We don't yet know how much the Nebula Capsule II will cost at retail. We'll update this post with a link one we have it. | You’ll Now See a Google Lens Shortcut When Doing an Image Search on Mobile Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Google announced it was bringing Google Lens functionality to Google Image searches last month. Well, it's now there. When inside of an Image Search on mobile, you'll see the Google Lens logo in the bottom right. When you click it, Lens can give you more insight into what you're viewing and help you find related things. For example, if you're looking a product, it can tell you where to purchase it. As Google explains, "To start, the dots will appear on products and other objects Lens has identified, and in the coming months the dots will appear in more types of images, such as landmarks, animals and plants. You can still draw around anything you're interested in inside of an image to get more information and see related content." We aren't sure when the extra functionality will come, but we assume it's relatively soon. Google Lens is starting to take over. | Apex Launcher developer admits defeat, tries to roll back app to v3 Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT There was a time when Apex Launcher was among the best home screen apps on Android. However, it fell behind the likes of Nova and Action Launcher before going silent. Apex made a comeback in 2017, but the update to v4 over the summer has been nothing short of a disaster. Now, the developers are trying to undo the damage by rolling back to v3 in the latest “update.” The response was swift and overwhelmingly negative when the v4 update rolled out over the summer. Users complained of annoying layout bugs, missing features, deleted settings, and a suggest app feature no one wanted. The app’s recent reviews have almost all been one or two stars. According to the latest changelog, the new version’s interface is “similar to that of V3.” So, it should behave like the old launcher (see above). However, the developer also warns that it might be unstable. That doesn’t seem particularly encouraging, nor a good idea after your users have complained for months that the app is a buggy mess. Unfortunately, the rollback is still causing problems for some users—there are complaints of missing apps and continuing UI glitches. The new-old version might just be the v4 app with UI changes to make it look like the old one. Whatever the situation, Apex Launcher is quickly reaching the point of alienating whatever user base it still has. | Anker announces Nebula Capsule II pico projector with Android TV Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Anker has released a few Android-powered projectors over the past year — the Nebula Mars, Nebula Mars II, and Nebula Capsule. Even though the Capsule is only about six months old, Anker already has plans for a replacement. The Nebula Capsule II is brighter, has a higher-resolution projector, and runs the full Android TV operating system. I’ve reviewed all of Anker’s projectors so far, and my most pressing complaint across all of them has been the software experience. All previous models ran a heavily-modified build of normal Android, and no matter how much Anker polished it, running smartphone apps on a device without a touch screen was never going to work well. Thankfully, the Capsule II runs the actual Android TV operating system (version 9 Pie). No more sketchy Aptotide app store — you get the Play Store loaded with thousands of TV-optimized applications. Google Assistant is also present, accessible via the remote’s embedded microphone. The Capsule also works as a Cast receiver, like other Android TV devices. Anker has also made several improvements to the hardware. The projection resolution has jumped from 854×480 to 1280×720, the brightness has doubled to 200 ANSI lumens, and the microUSB port has been replaced with a Type-C connector. Charging now works over USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), instead of Qualcomm Quick Charge. Finally, the internal speakers have been improved, with 50% larger driver enclosures to ensure deeper bass. Now that Anker has finally adopted Android TV, and thrown in a few hardware improvements to boot, the Capsule II easily blows away other Android-based pico projectors. It’s available now on Kickstarter, at an early bird price of $369 (retail price will be $599). You can back it from the source link below, and Anker estimates it will begin shipping in May 2019.

| Arlo adding animal, vehicle, and package detection to Arlo Smart plans Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT ARLO ANNOUNCES NEW INDUSTRY-FIRST FEATURES COMING TO ARLO SMART FOR ADDITIONAL AI-POWERED, COMPUTER VISION CAPABILITIES THAT DELIVER EVEN MORE PEACE OF MIND
All-new Animal, Vehicle and Package Detection capabilities will allow Arlo camera owners to further personalize their notifications to what matters most to them SAN JOSE, Calif. — October 25, 2018 — Arlo Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARLO), the #1 network connected camera brand1, announced today it will be rolling out all-new AI-powered detection features to its Arlo Smartsubscription service that works with any Arlo security camera. Utilizing intelligent algorithms and advanced analytics, Arlo Smart will offer users even more personalized, meaningful notifications by way of industry-first Animal, Vehicle and Package Detection capabilities2. These new features will be available later this year, automatically rolling out to Arlo Smart subscribers at no extra cost. "The introduction of Animal, Vehicle and Package Detection to Arlo Smart marks the next generation of precise AI and video analytics offerings," said Pat Collins, senior vice president of Arlo products. "By leveraging the power of Arlo's advanced AI and computer vision capabilities, our users can enjoy added peace of mind and convenience to tailor their notifications to only the important events they truly care about." Arlo Smart adds valuable intelligence to Arlo security cameras with the help of powerful computer vision technology that can tell users more specifically what triggered their camera to begin recording. These deeper insights about detected activity, paired with direct access to emergency services or friends and family, allow users to not only monitor, but also take swift action in urgent situations. With the additional capabilities coming to Arlo Smart, users will be able to customize their alerts to cover more specific events, such as package deliveries, vehicles pulling into driveways, or animals wandering onto private properties. These new capabilities will supplement existing features that Arlo Smart subscribers already enjoy, such as Person Detection and Cloud Activity Zones, which allow users to define specific areas to monitor and filter out false notifications like trees swaying in the wind. Arlo Smart's Rich Notifications deliver thumbnail clips of what Arlo saw, right on the lock screen of the user's mobile device. Users can then simply press and hold to view the motion-triggered video clip, thereby eliminating the need to launch the app to view. Arlo Smart also tags and classifies recorded videos with information about what was detected, making it easy to filter and search through footage by category. In addition to features like Person Detection, Cloud Activity Zones and Rich Notifications, the Arlo Smart Premier and Arlo Smart Elite service plans also enable users to quickly handle emergencies from anywhere. Arlo Smart's e911 Emergency Call Service lets the user tap on the Rich Notification to connect with first responders local to the camera's location3, instead of where the user is located. By eliminating the rerouting of emergency calls based on the user's location, Arlo Smart can save valuable time in urgent situations. Arlo Smart is available for purchase for any Arlo smart home products and can also extend the availability of cloud recordings up to 60 days. Plans start at just $2.99 per camera per month and range up to $14.99 per month to support up to 20 cameras. For a limited time only, new subscribers can sign up for a one-month free trial of the Arlo Smart Premier plan to check out the added convenience and peace of mind that Arlo Smart can bring. |
| AMD announces end of 32-bit video driver support Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT Japanese gaming website 4Gamer reports that AMD has discontinued support for 32-bit drivers for the company’s graphics cards. The company put 32-bit support for AMD drivers on Windows into legacy support. AMD customers who use 32-bit Windows operating systems may continue to use the latest 32-bit driver released by the company for its video cards but won’t receive any more updates for it. The only exception to the rule is that AMD may patch critical issues that are discovered in the near future. Whether that means critical security issues, stability issues, or issues with individual games is unclear at this point in time.
The last 32-bit version of the Radeon driver, Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.9.3, for Windows was released in September 2018. It included support for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Forza Horizon and fixed two stability and usability issues. The latest driver that AMD released is driver version 18.10.2; the driver is only available for 64-bit versions of Windows and not for 32-bit versions anymore.
Nvidia, AMD’s biggest rival in the video card niche, announced end of support for 32-bit drivers on Windows in 2017 but promised to produce security updates for 32-bit drivers when necessary until 2019. A quick look at Steam’s Hardware Survey for September 2018 shows that 32-bit operating systems make up below 2% of the entire Windows operating system population. Steam’s survey does not provide a 100% image of the entire Windows population; gamers tend to invest more in hardware and software as games are mode demanding than most other applications that Windows users may run on their devices.
