Take the City Back from Evil Rodent Gangs in Beat Street

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

Visually, Beat Street is beautiful with the retro pixel art style that is reminiscent of classics from the ’90s era. I have fond memories of games like Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!, and this game is rather reminiscent of it for me. Despite the pixel art, Beat Street is packed with detailed environments and colorful characters that all stand out from each other. The game makes use of a bright and vibrant color palette that will hit you with a sense of better times. Animations are smooth and fluid with no issues of lag or choppiness on my iPhone 8 Plus. To top off this sentimental love letter, Beat Street has an upbeat and quirky chiptune soundtrack that wraps it all up nicely. Plus, the sound effects when you punch things in the face is downright fun.

In Beat Street, players are greeted with a map that shows the city. You take on the role of a young boy who has been given the task of cleaning up the city from the evil gangs that have been taking over. To move on to the next stage, the current one must be completed first. Up to three stars can be earned, depending on the difficulty level you choose. The goal is simple: clear out all waves of enemies on each stage using your awesome martial art skills. A boss, which is usually tougher than the rest of the goons and has a special attack, appears at the end. Everything is pretty straightforward, but the game still proves to be a fun challenge in terms of combat.

The controls are simple and clearly designed for touch screens. To move your character freely around the environment, just drag your thumb around. The game is a side-scroller, so when you reach the edge of the screen, you move on to the next sector. To do a basic attack, just tap on the screen — doing consecutive hits results in combos, which fills up your combo meter for an ultimate attack. Walking up to an enemy allows you to grab them, where you can then proceed with regular taps to perform hits while they’re in your grasp. Swiping horizontally while you’re grabbing them has you throw them. You can do a quick flick for a dash, but it uses combo points. Finally, you can flick upwards to do a jump kick attack, but be careful, as this one depletes your combo meter as well. You can also tap-and-hold to perform a charged attack.

Every now and then, you may find a weapon on the ground, such as a baseball bat. You can pick up an item by running over to it and tapping the screen. The item gets equipped on your hero and you can dish out more damage with it in your attacks. But keep an eye on how long you’ve had it — they don’t last forever.

Once your combo meter is full, a button appears in the bottom left corner that lets you do an ultimate attack. This is a powerful flurry of hits that can take out most small foes and deal a hefty amount of damage to bosses, so make sure to use them at the right time. You can collect different scrolls that let you do different kinds of attacks, and collect tokens to upgrade your hero.

When you complete stages, you can get a plethora of rewards. These can include enemy figures that provide you with benefits in battle, and character tokens to upgrade, evolve, and unlock new heroes. The other characters that you can play as have their own play style and ultimate attacks, which can drastically change the gameplay. The more you play, the more variety you get.

After you clear the sixth level, you also gain access to the shop. Here, you’ll find many useful items, and the offerings change every couple of hours. You’ll need gold coins or green gems (premium currency) to get anything here, so save up!

Since Beat Street is a free game, there are ads every so often and an energy system. If you’re low on coins and want to get something, you can watch ads to get more. It’s pretty generous with the amount of coins you get, so it’s not too bad. However, if you’re looking for an ad-free experience, it doesn’t appear to have an option for that. All of the in-app purchases are for getting more gems, which you can also exchange for coins.

A ’90s inspired beat em up that is refined for mobile with one touch controls.

Live Sports Integration Reportedly Coming To Apple’s TV App Next Month

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

For proper use of this site, you need to enable javascript in your browser!

TV app

Here's more from the report:

Word that live sports integration is coming next month comes to us from a source that 9to5Mac has verified is from a major sports network. According to the source, live sports integration should arrive in the TV app as part of iOS 11.2 on or around December 4th. Live sports integration will also work with the TV app on Apple TV and should arrive as part of tvOS 11.2 based on this information.

Live sports integration works with live games broadcasted from ESPN with live scores and game time remaining displayed across multiple live games on a single interface. Scores will optionally be hidden according to Apple's demo in September. As part of live sports integration, the TV app will also be able to send alerts for close games so you can switch to those as they happen.

The report also noted that the TV app will also be receiving a new Sports tab with the update as well.

Along with tvOS 11.2, iOS 11.2 is also in beta testing, but the upgraded TV app has yet to arrive.

Weekly Recap: 5T, X4, and Razer

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

Most years, we don't often expect much to happen in the Android industry after Google announces its hardware, but this year has been somewhat different. Not only do we have another OnePlus flagship-level phone to test, we also got the first phone from Razer and a mid-to-high tier phone from Motorola. And look, I'm not complaining – we love checking out new phones.

So this week, we unboxed the Razer Phone, covered all of the news out of the OnePlus 5T event, and polished off a review of the Moto X4 (both Android One and regular versions). For mid-November, that's a lot of new phone talk.

Outside of phone news, we got a bit opinionated over topics like Android TV and Google, NVIDIA's missing Spot, and Verizon's stance on unlocked phones after CDMA dies. It was a packed week!

Justice League or nah?

Razer’s Hammerhead USB Type-C Earbuds Will Work Perfectly on the Razer Phone

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

Razer is now selling its Hammerhead earbuds with USB Type-C, aimed directly at buyers of the Razer Phone.

There are pre-existing versions of the Hammerhead buds that have a 3.5mm connector, but since the Razer Phone doesn't have a dedicated headphone jack, these Hammerheads would make a good add-on. In fact, they'd probably make a good add-on for any Android device that doesn't have a headphone jack, which is a lot of them these days.

According to the listing, these earbuds have a custom-tuned DAC for clean and unprocessed audio, in-line microphone and volume control, as well as flat cables for tangle-free storage.

The Hammerheads are priced at $79.99 through Razer's online store. They haven't made their way to Amazon yet, but you can expect them to show up there, too, at some point.

Question of the Day: What’s Your Favorite Google Assistant Feature?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

I've found in recent months that I use the Google Assistant more and more. That could be because I've tried to add more Google Home units around the house and my wife and I enjoy yelling at them, but it's more likely that I'm using it more because Google keeps improving it and making it more accessible.

As I've mentioned in the past, I often have the Assistant set reminders for things that I need to know when I get home or to specific places. I use it to control various pieces of my house (temperature, lights, cameras, etc.). I certainly check the weather through it multiple times in a week. I've created Home groups to have the Assistant play music through almost every day. And I've even tried to get back into using the shopping list, even after Google pulled it from Keep and created a dedicated shopping list within Express.

Still, I feel like I'm not using the Google Assistant enough and am curious how you all are getting the most out of it? Are you using Google Assistant to find out info, complete tasks, play games, etc.? What is your favorite or most-used Google Assistant feature or command?

Google adds Nest Thermostat E, Secure Alarm System, Connect, and Cam IQ outdoor to the Google Store

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST

When Google recently decided to sell only company-made hardware in the Google Store, Nest products were kept in stock. That’s not exactly a surprise, given that it’s a subsidiary of Alphabet, just like Google. Now the lineup of Nest security cameras, thermostats, and other smart home security accessories sold in the Google Store is expanding.

The Nest Thermostat E, Secure Alarm System, Connect, and Cam IQ outdoor have been added to the Google Store – with varying availability, of course:

The Nest Cam IQ outdoor is the only one of the four newly added Nest products that has a live “Buy” link. But the purchase page says it ships in 4-5 weeks, which basically makes it a preorder. A Nest Cam IQ outdoor two-pack is listed as “coming soon.”

Head to the Google Store if you want to learn more about the products, and read why Ryan thinks it’s silly not to at least consider getting a Nest Thermostat E.

[Deal Alert] Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 with $20 Play Store credit for just $459.99 ($140 off) at Costco

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST

With Black Friday around the corner, it’s just about the perfect time of the year for the dozens of you who are in the market for a new Android tablet. As a prelude to the peak season for big discounts on products that have modest demand, Costco has a sweet deal on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, one of the few legitimately premium Android tablets out there. Costco members can scoop up the Tab S3 for just $459.99, which knocks $140 off the original price. The deal includes $20 in Google Play credit, bringing the total discount on the tablet to $160, if you’re fine with that sort of math.

The Tab S3 has a strong set of specs, including a 9.7″ 1536 x 2048 AMOLED display (which supports HDR video), an S Pen, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 6,000mAh battery, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and quad speakers. Costco is selling the Wi-Fi model of the tablet. We previously saw the Tab S3 going for $469.99 with a $20 Google Play gift card on eBay.

In his review, Ryan called the Tab S3 “a good tablet with a bad price.” At this discounted price, the Samsung tablet looks like a pretty good buy. The deal is available only to Costco members (limit of three per member) and is valid through Monday, November 27th (Cyber Monday). Get it while supplies last.

Weekend Poll: What browser do you use on your phone?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST

Your browser is your gateway to the world. With it, you can access a surfeit of information, including sites like ours. From a functional standpoint, most browsers are quite alike, but each has a distinctive set of features. And like anything with specific or distinguishing characteristics, a particular browser is something you develop a taste for. So, when it comes to your phone, which one do you use?

Some people just stick with whatever their phone ships with, be it Google’s in-house Chrome, Samsung’s Browser, or even an OEM-tweaked AOSP browser. Some of you might even be using iOS and Safari. And there’s nothing wrong with that. We aren’t snobs when it comes to software here. But with Samsung releasing its browser to the Play Store earlier this year and Firefox V57 landing recently in anticipation of future Quantum goodness, it made us curious about what our readers might be using.

Personally, with Google’s services being such an integral part of my workflow, I stick with Chrome on my phone. The shared device settings and history, custom tabs, and overall snappiness have me pretty pleased. At this point, any other browser would increase the time it takes for me to do work, which I just can’t do.  (That said, many people have similar customized workflows arranged via Firefox, so it’s certainly possible, though there might be migration pains.)

So what browser do you use on your phone? If it isn’t on the list, feel free to mention it in comments.

Are These Ambiance Theme Forks Better Than The Real Thing?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 12:04 PM PST

Ahh, Ambiance.

It's been the default Ubuntu GTK theme for almost as long as I've been blogging, but it's far from being the design darling it was when it debuted back in 2010.

Ubuntu wants to replace it with a new theme in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS based on Ambiance, and more than 90% of you agree that it's time the theme was replaced.

We recently took a look at the best GTK themes for Ubuntu and, in doing, so learnt that a lot of you love the Ubuntu color scheme used by Ambiance but don't dig its bevels, gradients and inconsistent padding.

Can the Ambiance theme be improved? Based on the results form the following designers, yes!

Ambiance RW GTK Theme

ambiance rw gtk theme

Ambiance RW bills itself as a "re-interpretation of the Ambiance theme" using more modern design trends. For example, buttons have less padding, and there's tighter spacing between text elements.

The Ambiance RW theme makes a number of stylistic changes, including greater spacing in window control buttons, reduced padding in the CSD/header bar buttons, improved hover effects, eye-catching toolips and button styles, and (hurrah) gives us an app menubar which has a consistent gradient color.

The result is, to my eyes, a version of Ambiance that looks like it belongs in 2017.

Ambiance RW is totally free and available to download from GNOME Look. The theme only works with GTK 3.20 or later so it may not work on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Ambiance RW Theme on GNOME Look

ARC Ambiance GTK Theme

Arc is one of the most popular GTK themes around, and Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distros around. So naturally a marriage of the two produces a beautiful end result.

Arc Ambiance is (as some of you may be able to guess from the name) a fork of the Arc GTK theme that uses the brown and orange palette of Ambiance to great effect.

It's a less faithful transformation than Ambiance RW (see above) but I personally think that was the right decision. It takes the best bits of Ambiance and meshes it with the best bits of Arc — the result is a theme that looks like neither of its sources, and looks totally individual.

The prominent header bar, the clear menus and pop-overs, and the decision to use a dark sidebar in Nautilus …Mmm, this theme gets my vote!

ARC Ambiance on GNOME Look
