Remember Apple's BeatsX Wireless Earphones? They're Almost Here

Posted: 03 Feb 2017 07:06 AM PST

Like AirPods, Apple's BeatsX wireless earphones were first announced at the company's iPhone 7 event in September. Unlike AirPods, however, they have yet to be released. That could change very soon, according to iStockNow.

Long popular with customers looking for the latest iPhone, iStockNow offers live inventory tracking for key Apple products including AirPods, MacBook, and Apple Watch.

According to the site, Apple's online store is "all ready" for the BeatsX product launch. Additionally, they've noticed "some activity" for the product on BestBuy's U.S. website.

The $149.95 BeatsX wireless headphones feature the Apple W1 chip, which is also found on AirPods. Other features include:

  • An eight-hour battery with Fast Fuel, which gives you two hours of playback from a five minute charge
  • RemoteTalk, allowing you to take calls with a built-in mic, play music, adjust volume, and activate Siri
  • Launching in black and white
  • Lightning charging

Unlike AirPods, BeatsX earphones use a wire between each bud. They also feature an in-ear design similar to the one found on the company's UrBeats wired headphones.

We'll continue to follow this story and let you know when BeatsX wireless earphones finally launch.

In the meantime, are you planning on buying a pair? Leave your comments below.

How to use 3D stickers in Snapchat

Posted: 03 Feb 2017 06:06 AM PST

Add some flair — and moving poop emoji! — to your snaps with 3D stickers.

Updated February 2017: Changed steps to reflect Snapchat’s newest update.

Everyone wants to up their Snapchat game and go for something more than just mouthing along to whatever song came on the radio (sorry, Kylie Jenner!) Snapchat’s new 3D Stickers let you do just that. You can ‘stick’ emoji’s to parts of your moving Snapchat video and then watch in delight — or horror — as that emoji moves along to whatever you’ve stuck it too. A smiley face on a dog, a plane between the fingers, a bug on the head, maybe all three? You’re limited only by your imagination.

How to add 3D stickers to your Snapchat videos

  1. Launch Snapchat from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the Snapchat button.
  3. Record your video– if you want, you can add your favourite lens.
  4. Tap the button in the upper right-hand corner that looks like a small folded napkin to add your emoji.
  5. Adjust the size of your emoji by pinching and zooming to fit your video properly

  6. Tap and hold the emoji you added — the video will pause when you do it right.
  7. Adjust and position the emoji on top of the thing you want it to follow and let go.

It may take a few times to get it right, so try adjusting and readjusting the emoji until it follows the path you want.

If you’re feeling extra creative, try adding more than one 3D sticker to a video. You can transform yourself into a true Snapchat master with just the tap of an emoji. Just think of the possibilities!

Identify Incoming Calls Without Looking at Your iPhone

Posted: 03 Feb 2017 05:43 AM PST

You're expecting an important, can't-be-missed call from your top client. But you're also in dire need of a bath. So you decide to bring your iPhone in the bathroom with you in the event that the important call comes while you're busy performing your ablutions. Sure enough, your iPhone rings and you scramble out of the bath and wipe your hands dry to get to it … only to find out that it's a spam caller. Tough luck. If only there was a way for you to identify incoming calls without looking at your iPhone, so that you'd know whether they're worth picking up right away.

Well, as it turns out, there are at least three ways for you to know who's calling without having to see what's on your iPhone's screen (and without having to wear an Apple Watch at that).

Have Siri announce calls

If your iPhone is running iOS 10 or later, you can use the feature called Announce Calls, which effectively has Siri, Apple's virtual personal assistant, speaking the name of the contact behind an incoming call. Follow the steps below to turn on this feature and be able to identify incoming calls with a bit of help from Siri.

By default, Announce Calls is set to Never, which means that Siri has no say, so to speak, in the identification of callers.

Choose Always if you want Siri to announce who's calling you no matter what, except of course if your iPhone is on silent mode. Just be mindful that other people might become privy to the identity of a caller if your iPhone is within their earshot, as when you're in a conference room or in a relatively quiet coffee shop. This is the proper option for you if you picture yourself dealing with scenarios like the bathroom situation described at the beginning of this article.

Choose Headphones & Car if you want Siri to identify incoming calls only when your iPhone is connected to an external audio device, particularly your earphones or your car's infotainment system. This is the perfect choice if you just want the advantage of not having to get your iPhone out of your pocket or take your eyes off the road to know who's calling you.

Choose Headphones Only if you want Siri to announce who's calling you only when you're using your iPhone with a pair of earphones. If you don't want the identity of a caller to be spoken aloud and if you don't own a car, then this option is for you. It will serve you well especially when someone rings you up during your run, bike ride, or commute and you're listening to songs or podcasts on your pocketed iPhone.

Whichever of the three options you choose, Siri will speak the name of the contact who's calling you, once and only once, about a second into the ringtone. If the person who's calling is not in your contacts or if there's no caller ID, Siri will simply say, "Unknown caller."

Assign unique ringtones

Enlisting the help of Siri to identify incoming calls is great if you want any and all incoming calls to be announced. But what if you just want to know if the person who's calling is one of only a handful of contacts who matter to you? That is, you'd only be compelled to immediately pick up a call if it's from your mom, your significant other, your kid, your business partner, or your boss. Then one thing you can do is to assign — and then commit to memory — a unique ringtone for each "VIP" caller. Follow the steps below to be able to identify incoming calls via unique ringtones.

After assigning a ringtone to a contact, and unless your iPhone is on silent mode, that ringtone plays instead of the default ringtone whenever that contact calls you up. Ideally, you want the ringtone to be unique to each contact. But if you don't want to remember a bunch of ringtones, you can choose to assign just one ringtone for all of your VIP callers, so that when you hear that ringtone, you'd know that an important person is on the other end.

Create custom vibrations

By design, ringtones, even those that you've specially assigned to specific contacts, do not play on silent mode. Vibrations, however, can be set to play on silent mode, on ring, or even on both. And you can assign custom vibrations to certain contacts to let you know that someone important is calling just by the way your iPhone is vibrating.

First, you need to make sure that vibrations for alerts are enabled on your iPhone by following the steps below.

After making sure that vibrations are enabled, the next thing you have to do is to create custom vibrations by following the steps below.

After creating custom vibrations, what's left for you to do is to assign them to specific contacts. Below are the steps for that.

After assigning a custom vibration to a contact, that vibration plays instead of the default vibration whenever that contact calls you up. Ideally, you want the custom vibration to be unique to each contact. But if you don't want to remember a number of custom vibrations, you can choose to assign just one custom vibration for all of your VIP callers, so that when you feel or hear that custom vibration in your pocket or on your table, you'd know that an important person is calling you.

These are the ways you can more or less identify incoming calls without having to look at your iPhone. Hopefully, with at least one of these methods, you won't ever have to put yourself to the trouble of scrambling to answer what turns out to be a call of little or no importance. Which one works best for you?

SMB Zero-Day affects Windows 8, 10 and Server

Posted: 03 Feb 2017 05:42 AM PST

The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) published a vulnerability note yesterday about a new zero-day vulnerability affecting Microsoft Windows 8, 10 and Server editions.

It reads:

Microsoft Windows contains a memory corruption bug in the handling of SMB traffic, which may allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to cause a denial of service or potentially execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Attackers may cause a denial of service attack against affected versions of Windows by causing Windows devices to connect to a malicious SMB share. US-CERT notes that the possibility exists that the vulnerability may be exploited to execute arbitrary code with Windows kernel privileges.

Attacked systems may throw a blue-screen on successful attacks.

smb zero-day windows

The vulnerability description offers additional information:

Microsoft Windows fails to properly handle traffic from a malicious server. In particular, Windows fails to properly handle a server response that contains too many bytes following the structure defined in the SMB2 TREE_CONNECT Response structure. By connecting to a malicious SMB server, a vulnerable Windows client system may crash (BSOD) in mrxsmb20.sys. It is not clear at this point whether this vulnerability may be exploitable beyond a denial-of-service attack. We have confirmed the crash with fully-patched Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 client systems.

US-CERT confirmed the vulnerability on fully-patched Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 client systems. Bleeping Computer notes that security researcher PythonResponder claimed that it affects Windows Server 2012 and 2016 as well.

While there is no official confirmation of that yet, it seems likely that the Server products are also affected by the vulnerability.

Severity and suggested workarounds

US-CERT classifies the vulnerability with the highest severity rating of 10 using the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS).  Factors that play a role in determining the severity of a vulnerability include whether it is remotely exploitable, and how much expertise attackers require to successfully exploit the vulnerability.

Microsoft has not released a security advisory yet, but it is probably only a matter of time before the company publishes a security advisory to inform customers about the vulnerability and mitigation options.

US-CERT recommends to block outbound SMB connections on TCP port 139 and 445, and UDP ports 137 and 138 from the local network to the WAN. to protect Windows devices.

Home user networks may be affected by the vulnerability, but WANs are not that widely used in home environments.

To find out whether your version of Windows has any SMB connections, do the following:

  1. Tap on the Windows-key, type Powershell, hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys, and hit the Enter-Key.
  2. Confirm the UAC prompt that appears.
  3. Run the command Get-SmbConnection.

We will update the article once Microsoft publishes a security advisory for the vulnerability. (via Born City)
