Imagine an international system so powerful, corporations are able to bring entire countries to their knees and exact nearly any concession they desire from them. Well, that system essentially exists, and it's called ISDS — investor-state dispute settlement. A component of numerous international trade deals, this system was intended to allow corporations to protect themselves and their investments against potentially rogue nations, who themselves would gain infrastructure and jobs from those corporations. However, as an 18-month BuzzFeed investigation reveals, the system is often abused by companies and executives who have used ISDS to do everything from get criminal charges dropped to pressure countries to change their laws.
